Hitting the road tomorrow for 10 days - tour of the Southwest

JZ - 5-8-2020 at 05:34 PM

Would love to go to Baja, but obviously can't.

Going to Lake Mead, then through Flagstaff, and on up to the Valley of the Gods in Utah. Monument Valley and Goosenecks are very close by (30-45mins).

Then swing back to Arizona going through Sedona and on to Scottsdale before heading home. Restaurants re-open on Monday in Arizona, so looking forward to a a couple nice meals out.

Anyone with suggestions of what to see on the way would help greatly. Taking our KTMs.

The route

Picked this up today for the trip. Super cheap. $115/day. To drive business the RV place waved the cleaning fee, included taxes, unlimited use of the generator, and only a $45 prep fee. Lots of deals out there like this.

Nice Rig. Kick up some dirt.

advrider - 5-8-2020 at 06:52 PM

All of Utah is amazing, especially the riding! I've only done Moab so not much help. Good deal on the trailer, smart way to go right now, enjoy.

Lee - 5-8-2020 at 08:12 PM

Looks like a toy hauler. Keeping bikes in back? You're doing the right thing. And your kids love you. Let 'er rip.

There are thousands of places to see and do, depending on your interests. E.g., Bryce is partially open. You should develop an itinerary with many destinations, check to see if they're open. With the high temperatures, low gas mileage, you'll want to maximize your experience with a Plan that works. E.g., unless you want to play golf in Flagstaff (open?), why there? See what's open in Sedona (parking permit needed for most trailheads too). See if the Salt River tubing (E of Phoenix) is open; check the Tonto Natl Forest trails, campgrounds; there are many ghost towns in Nevada and Arizona - 40 in the Bradshaw mountains alone. Dozens of hotsprings in Nevada.
Goldfield ghost town
Chevelon Cyn – Rock Art Ranch
Valley of Fire
Grand Canyon Caverns
Lost City Museum in Overton
Escalante
Capitol Reef

You won’t get your trailer in there, but you can drive out to it as long as it has not rained recently.

When you are on I-40 in CA and AZ turn on to old US Hwy 66 and give your kids a history lesson about the Mother Road. At the east end of Seligman, AZ is a hamburger place that serves a great hamburger called Deladillo's Snow Cap at the corner of Lamport St and Chino St. If you get the same order taker as I did be careful if you ask for mustard only. She scared the crap out of me. Great food with some old restored car to look at.

TMW - 5-9-2020 at 04:52 PM

Another place would be Oatman. It's at the west end of 66 before the CA crossing. Old mining town with donkeys in the middle of the street doing what ever they want to do.

Delgadillo's and Oatman

John M - 5-10-2020 at 05:58 AM

Tom's suggestions are good ones!

Delgadillo's - Angel Delgadillo - kind of an old guy now - was one of those who rekindled interest in Route 66 - A nostalgic place for sure.

Oatman - JZ - approach Oatman from the Mohave Valley side via Highway 95, coming in from the east (Kingman) the long trailer and the twisty road won't get along.

And yes, you are right ;)

I'm guessing Akita/Malamute mix. Quite possibly Purebred Akita.

I'm on your heels JZ.
With living in LA county and ALL the restrictions in place, I've decided to take a LONG road/camping trip.

Also the weather is nice and gas is as cheap as it gets. Hopefully there won't be the crowds that there usually are.....I'm thinkin that there won't be...

Starting out within the next week and hitting up Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and maybe Idaho, Montana and Oregon .

As always the ONLY plan I have is to have FUN....

JZ, please do a fallow-up on your trip.
Be safe and have FUN......

"Crowds in the Az forest are crazy now."

Haha, took me a minute to translate. That is funny.

thebajarunner - 5-13-2020 at 03:28 PM

Don't try traveling in California
Besides outrageous gas prices (average a buck a gallon more than the US average, thanks to regulatory mandates and huge taxes) most parks and public access are closed.

The big sign on Highway 120 a mile from my house alternates between "All campgrounds and parks closed in Tuolumne County" to the alternate bummer "Yosemite NP closed to all visitors"
And has been closed for about two months.

A good thing to know about remote camping.
"Disbursed camping" is the term given to camping in unimproved areas. It is legal anywhere in the U.S. on public land, except where posted otherwise.

Thus, most of our Western States that are hugely controlled by BLM and/or designated national forest are available for camping wherever you wish. Carry your own water, crap behind the trees with the bears, have a great time!!

Use the App called FreeRoam. It is really good.

We are in Arizona now, heading for Utah tomorrow.

bajarich - 5-14-2020 at 09:02 PM

San Juan County in Utah (were Valley of the Gods and Goosenecks of the San Juan are) has a very high rate of Covid 19. Mostly on the Navajo Reservation. Not sure what you will find open at Bluff or Mexican Hat.

Didn't see any Covid patients, but saw a couple good views.

JZ - 5-16-2020 at 10:00 AM

Yes. Valley of the Gods, on BLM land.

StuckSucks - 5-16-2020 at 08:26 PM

I hope you're taking up the drone in Valley of the Gods. LOVE the place!!

Flew the crap out of it. Video coming.

My 18 yo kid pulled it about 80% of the way. Teaching him how to drive in Baja at 14 has paid off.

Get the Mavic Air 2. DJI makes the best drones, by far.

How much actual flying time do you see with the Mavic Air 2 battery?

JZ - 5-17-2020 at 12:21 PM

I have the Mavic Pro 2. I never like to run the battery down much past 40%. Because you are always flying it far away, or on a boat, or following the truck or bikes. Once it hits 50-60% I make sure it's on it's way back.

That gives about 15 mins of shooting, give or take. I have a small case that holds 3 extra batteries. So change out batteries often.

An inverter and multi-battery (3 at once) charger gets you charged up fast, anywhere.

Thanks for the impressive videos. Also for the good firsthand user report. Helps with a decision on investing in a drone knowing what to expect.
