Insurance Refund

jodiego - 5-13-2020 at 12:00 PM

I asked Discover Baja if I could get a credit or refund on my mexican insurance, mainly because I won't be going down to mexico for awhile. It's good until August, 2020.They wouldn't do it. Was I asking too much and are there companies that are crediting or refunding?

BajaMama - 5-13-2020 at 12:10 PM

Some USA companies are. I don't know about Mexican insurance.

I will take a guess that if you got a one-year policy that will cover you for up to 90-days during the year, I would say not... just guessing, however.
The insurance is actually from HDI Seguros (or another Mexican company) and Discover Baja, Baja Bound, and others are only the salesman/ agent for the Mexican company.

jodiego - 5-13-2020 at 12:32 PM

By their response, I believe that is the situation. Can you explain to me the "cover you for up to 90 days during the year".

David K - 5-13-2020 at 12:41 PM

Yes, it is the policy I usually get. I am covered for any trips into NW Mexico as long as the total period is 90 days in that year. In 2017, I went to Baja 8 times for trips between 3 and 14 days for a total of around 60 days. Yes, it is an honor system as to when you are in Mexico. This kind of policy is the greatest value with premium coverage (including legal aid and towing). My policy was mid year to mid year so the actual number of days on the policy was much less.

That 90 day has always concerned me, not saying there
has ever been a reported problem with it. Just that it is
on the honor system. Not being one to trust Ins Co's,
I find it to have too many vague terms. Don't know the
$ difference in a straight 365 day policy though, which I
go with

I don't expect any rebate on my Mex insurance policy. It won't hurt too much though, I bought an annual, liability only, driver's license policy that covers me in whichever of my fully depreciated vehicles I choose to drive SOB!

I have until Jan 21 before I have to renew, so I may still get my money's worth out of the policy!

Most Mexican Auto Insurance policies are fully earned at inception. No refunds. That's the policies for US tagged cars coming down here.

I repeat. Insurance is only good until you need it. The only thing that you MAY be protected from is the loss of assets. If you get in an accident in Mexico, you will lose. Drive like it.

I am expecting my car insurance rebate to arrive right around the time I get money back for my annual fishing license.

I disagree with that. I've had three accidents in Baja. The first and last paid off. The first was a brand new 1988 Toyota PU one month old. The second was my 1991 chevy 4x4. In 1995 they paid to have it fixed in San Diego. My last was my 1993 Toyota 4x4 totaled in Dec. 2007 and paid KB price.

I would not recommend anyone drive reckless mainly because if someone is hurt or killed you would be in a world of trouble if it's your fault.

If you did not get a refund recently (last 2-3 years) through direct deposit, or have a SS account with direct deposit, you are likely at the back of the bus. They need your bank account number/routing number, or you have to wait for a snail mail check.

But, that paper check will be signed by Donald J. Trump, not Steven Mnuchin. So, you got that going for ya!

In addition, even if they have your banking account info from directly PAYING TAXES (we havent got a refund in a long time because we never had anything withheld), it's not the same as them having your direct deposit info, for some reason.

We only got ours this past week.
