GUESS WHERE IN BAJA IV (and the beat goes on)

David K - 6-3-2020 at 08:19 AM

You Nomads have been great at answering the questions of where the photos were taken! I kept trying to make them more challenging and the last game I stumped you on a couple... even with hints. TMW has been the champ on the previous three... does he have some competition?

1) Road between El Arco and Punta San Francisquito. Pacifico

2) Entrance to San Pablo Canyon, east of Vizcaino. TMW

3) Cañon San Pablo upper end from the road to San Francisco de la Sierra. AKgringo

4) La Bufadora Inn, Bahía Asunción. AKgringo

5) Punta Falsa. TMW

6) Junction of roads to Asución and Torugas, west of Vizcaino. TMW

7) Mirador (Viewpoint) between San José del Cabo & Cabo San Lucas. RnR & El Jefe

8) The Bat Cave near Santiago. AKgringo

9) La Paz. bajafreaks

10) El Triunfo. BajaBill74

11) Morro Santo Domingo. Bajazly.

12) Parador Punta Prieta (L.A. Bay Jcn.). AKgringo.

As they are guessed correctly, I will put the answer and the Nomad credit next to the photo number. Go for it!

AKgringo: 4
TMW: 3
Pacifico: 1

#8: YES, Pretty close, this is the BAT CAVE of Santiago, near Las Cuevas.

LOL... I am not saying a thing! But, yes... you are correct.
I posted this photo in April 2017 on my Trip #4 research trip for Baja Bound before I knew Cameron went their and made it his secret beach.

Sorry, incorrect... keep trying!

BajaBill74 - 6-3-2020 at 02:36 PM

David, I took this picture in 1999 and it looks a lot like number 9. I was walking South from what was La Pinta hotel.

Yes, there are many palapas on beaches in Baja! Look at #9 and notice the coconut palms, the sailboat light poles, the curve of the coastline, all of which do not match San Felipe. Also, your photo is looking south. Mine is looking north (ooops, that is a huge hint)!

RnR - 6-3-2020 at 04:06 PM

#7 - 'Zippers' surf break just south (or west) of San Jose del Cabo.

El Jefe - 6-3-2020 at 07:22 PM

#7 Old Man's surf break taken from the Mirador looking towards Palmilla in the distance. SJdC

RnR - 6-3-2020 at 07:41 PM

#7 - I'll defer the answer to someone with more local knowledge than me. But, I knew that it was taken from the Mirador on Hwy 1.

How far is Zippers from Old Man's?

David K - 6-3-2020 at 08:47 PM

The answer for me was pretty easy, Mirador between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. Zipper's wasn't the answer I knew, but RnR added "west of San José" so that worked! Thanks Tom for jumping in, too.

David K - 6-4-2020 at 07:46 AM

According to the book, The Surfer's Guide to Baja, Zippers, The Rock, and Old Man (also called Acapulquito) are all very close together, just south-west of San José del Cabo and before Punta Palmilla (the point seen in the background of my photo).

My photo was taken at the Mirador (Viewpoint) at near Km. 28. That is just two kms. from the street to the beach hotels of San José del Cabo and the estuary park (Km. 30).

Going south from San José del Cabo are: Zippers, The Rock, Acapulquito (Old Man). Then the coast curves out to Punta Palmilla.

Hints Needed?

#1 is not in Baja California Sur, but close!

#2 can be guessed by the answer to #3.

#5 The furthest west peninsula outhouse in one state.

#6 The kilometer sign is not on Highway 1, at least what we think of as Highway 1. Here I am driving west.

#9 A city beach facing west. Watching the sunset here is nice.

Zippers is about 500 meters up the beach from Old Mans in the opposite direction that the picture was taken.

Yes, of course it is! Good job!
A beach city on the east side of Baja with a west-facing coast.

No more guesses? Some additional hints...

David K - 6-5-2020 at 08:46 AM

#1 is not in Baja California Sur, but close! A major dirt road with a couple of inland resorts enjoyed motorcycle riders on or near it.

#2 can be guessed by the answer to #3. There is a canyon in the distance that contains a mission period structure.

#5 The furthest west peninsula outhouse in one state. A couple of islands are nearby, one surfers like and the other has a salt hill.

#6 The kilometer sign is not on Highway 1, at least what we think of as Highway 1. Here I am driving west. The km distance is from Vizcaino.

Pacifico - 6-5-2020 at 08:55 AM

Close... you can go a bit further by road, however... Where is this outhouse?

Like I said, on the road south of B.D.L.A.....as seen in my rear view mirror!

TMW - 6-5-2020 at 10:47 AM

#6 is on the hwy to Punta Eugenia and the pix is near the turn off to Bahia Asuncion.

TMW - 6-5-2020 at 11:00 AM

#2 is before San Pablo Canyon.

Because we need to be specific as there are lots of roads south of L.A. Bay... It was not on the road south from BDLA, but on the road east from El Arco. Thank you for playing the game!

TMW - 6-5-2020 at 11:07 AM

#5 is at Punta Falsa.

YES! This is the road to San Pablo Canyon, near the locked gate, east of Vizcaino.

Exactly correct... past Punta Eugenia is Punta Falsa and an abandoned campo with palapas and this outhouse, in ruins.
