Amazing Baja book

Stickers - 6-5-2020 at 08:57 PM

I was browsing the internet looking for Graham's book and came upon a book I had never heard of called "The Baja Feeling"

It was written by Ben Hunter who was a popular radio guy in Los Angeles on KFI in the 1950 and later on had an afternoon TV show called The Ben Hunter Matinee on KTTV. Real smart likable guy and I remember the TV show when I was a kid.

Published in about 1975 it starts out with travels in the 1960's driving his wife's 'Pontiac Tempest' off-road to little coastal campos.

I have only read about the first 60 pages but he is really descriptive of the people and places he discovers.

Where I am in the book he and his wife have rented a camper on a pickup and are heading to Guadalajara where they thought they wanted to buy a home. They drive the coast through Mazatlan and San Blas. Visit small beach towns near Puerto Vallarta and go out to Yalapa but will eventually build a home on the beach in Baja.

I am really enjoying this book!

Yes, it's great... We have talked about often over the years, but not recently. Thanks for bringing it back on top of the discussion.

Just finished it a few days ago. Its a good read that a lot of us can relate to.

Another really great Baja book... it was my favorite for many years... was Mike McMahan's (the Baja wall map guy) book, 'There it is: Baja!' (1973 & 1974 in hardback). It was reissued in paperback under a new title, 'My Adventures in Baja' (1983). Either one that you can get will be a huge enjoyment. The paperback has a few more photos otherwise it is the same book inside.

It's only money, lol!
Try add-all.com for used and rare books.

I still have duplicate copies of some of my Baja library titles. One day, I will offer them up.
I also still have three of Harry Crosby's books for sale at www.oldmissions.com

That book is pretty good.

I do have one book about Baja that few seem to know....

"Millions Want to" by David L. Young

Weird thing is I just realized it is a signed 1rst edition.

What is it about. Can you scan and show us the cover(s)?

I see from searching, it was published in 1963...

Fatboy - 6-8-2020 at 05:12 PM

I was wondering if you knew about it....

It is about a series of trips they took to:
Libertad, Mexico
Dawson Creek, Ak
Florida

Then the last 90 or so pages are about a trip to Cabo.

The trips take place in the late 1940's and there are some cool pictures of San Borja, Concepion Bay (yes, your tree was there then also), Mission San Ignacio.

David K - 6-8-2020 at 05:17 PM

I never heard of it before!
Thanks for all you can share... I guess because it wasn't all about Baja, or had Baja in the title, it escaped me ??

Fatboy - 6-8-2020 at 05:29 PM

I think the title throws it off .... the cover is the rocks off of Cabo ....

I will try to post some pictures of some of the pages, I don't have a scanner.

I spent several weeks a year in the 80s and 90s in the condo complex in Ensenada where Margie lived. She was a wonderful lady who took her glass of white wine to watch the sunset every evening. She never missed a Baja sunset. A great book.

Margie was Ben Hunters wife and was with him on all his Baja adventures. After he passed away she spent the last twenty years of her life living in Baja.

Welcome Baja Jimbo! I see this is one of your first comments.

Millions want to! I would love to read it.

Margie sure had the right idea, didn't she? Sunset with a glass of wine...total bliss.
