Who on here knows Oregon?

JZ - 6-24-2020 at 04:36 PM

Thinking about a road trip from LA to Oregon next month.

Go up the 395N through Tahoe and come back along the coast.

10-14 days. Might tent camp 3 days.

What are the must sees?

mtgoat666 - 6-24-2020 at 05:20 PM

Nothing to see in Oregon! Stay in Calabasas!

TMW - 6-24-2020 at 05:42 PM

My ex son in law is a great guy and from OR. However the only time I was there several years ago and they did not have self service gas pumps the gas station owner/mgr would not pump gas for me. I had to go to another station. I never went back and I would not attend any family functions in that state. Screw em they can have the place.

I could be wrong but i think now you can pump your own gas but I think highways are still 55:( a few years ago I made the drive from Aberdeen to los angeles down the one, beach town after beach town full of local PD and 35 mph, glad I did it but never again!

You boycott the state because of the non-self-serve rules and one encounter with a gas jockey?

Grow up, You big baby!

JZ, sounds like a good roadtrip!

Coastal route from Oregon

jwheel1970 - 6-24-2020 at 07:50 PM

Made a return trip from Oregon down the coast - I would consider this a must-see. Beautiful - we went from Eugene Oregon West to the ocean then turned left!

Tell me more about this. This is exactly what we are thinking about doing

Go up through Tahoe, then on to Bend, with maybe a stop at Crater Lake before Bend.

Then 3 hrs to the coast and head South.

Just a couple of suggestions, the Columbia River Highway Multnomah Falls and the Columbia Gorge are quite spectacular. Tillamook Oregon was great, there is a cheese/Ice Cream Factory with tasting and tours, a really good Air Museum and my wife enjoyed their Barn Quilt displays. We have spent a fair amount of time in the Coos Bay area riding the Oregon Dunes. They go for many miles miles, our favorite campground is Hors Falls Campground, you can ride right from your camp onto the dunes. We try to make it to Harris Beach at least once a year. If you reserve far enough in advance, you can get a beach view campsite and there is a Ice Cream Truck that comes around in the evening. Make sure you have a good seat for the sunsets as they can be quite impressive. JH

Howard - 6-25-2020 at 10:04 AM

In Brookings, OR I like Harris Beach State Park to stay at.

Be sure to have lunch at Superfly's in town.

Gold Beach, stay at Indian Creek RV park. You and the kids take a jet boat ride up the river, it's a thrill! I think the major jet boat company is Jerry's and can be found at the south side of the bridge.

As BajaMedic said, go to the Tillamook factory, quite an assortment of good stuff to sample!

I was told by the waitress in the restaurant there that the local people didn't like people from CA because they were running up the price of housing. So screw OR I'm not going back and I ain't growing up.

pacificobob - 6-25-2020 at 12:16 PM

i just got off the phone with some friends in Oregon.
their council?......stay home.

thebajarunner - 6-25-2020 at 12:20 PM

If you are heading up from Tahoe then by all means go via Lassen N.P. From there up to Dusnmuir (stay on the back roads, don't head to 5)
At Weed head up 97 through Klamath Falls
By all means go to Crater Lake
Then head back West and over to the coast.
The Southern Oregon coast is far more spectacular than Northern.
From there, on down to the Redwoods and back to our occupied nation of California.
In the Redwoods by all means catch a few state parks, elk herds, etc.
And, the old 101 takes off for miles on something called "Avenue of the Giants" Don't miss it.

and....
yes, you pour your own gas, they finally woke up
no, you don't pay attention to the sick/sick/sick goat, he is a hater

I have and still live in Bend Oregon all of my life. My first trip to Baja Sur was in 1966. Come on up and enjoy our beautiful state

Great info. Much appreciated. It aligns pretty much with what I had been planning.

Below is the route I have been considering. It goes on the outside of Lassen N.F. But doesn't go through Dusmnuir. It does go on the 97 through Klamath Falls and past Crater Lake. Am I missing anything by not going through Dusmnuir?

Was thinking about stopping at Crater Lake and maybe staying around there 1 night, before heading up to Bend. Then cut over to the coast. Maybe see the 3 Sisters on the way and try to come out near Florence.

Great to hear that Southern Oregon coast is better than the Northern coast.

What are the best towns/places to stop along the Oregon coast?

I've seen a lot of pictures of the Avenue of the Giants and wanted to see it for a long time.

Looking forward to flying the drone with a birds eye view following the truck through the redwoods.

mtgoat666 - 6-25-2020 at 02:31 PM

OR coast has good beaches, nice scenic drive (though slow)

Lots of good rafting rivers to choose from.

Cascades are great, lots of areas to hike, some above timber line with summer snow fields to play on.

Bend is sort of boring, white-bread town, just retirees, and outdoorsy young people selling too much craft beer. It also gets a bit toasty on east side of mountains in summer, so I would stick to mountains and western oregon. i only do bend in winter, spring or fall.

ashland is my favored overnight stop when doing the I5 jive from CA to WA. cool town to hang in for an afternoon/evening.

the drive from susanville up thru lava beds nat monument, klamath and ending at crater lake is nice drive

Look a you living up to the motto in your sig!

I added a note in the draft itinerary about doing a detour through Lava Beds National Monument on the way to Crater Lake

Good luck flying a drone through the Redwoods. Lots of ginormous trees to swallow up your drone.

Also, not sure how the tree huggers would appreciate the sound of the drone through such a beautiful and wonderous place of nature.

Howard - 6-25-2020 at 03:04 PM

I forgot to mention, Crater Lake can get really cold even in July, bring warm clothes for the evenings.

It flies up to 1500 feet.

Bird's eye view is looking straight down on the subject from high up.

thebajarunner - 6-25-2020 at 04:54 PM

First of all, yes indeed, it does get cold at Crater Lake
When I was a kid we camped there on my birthday, August 2.
Next morning my dad had to break the ice on top of our water bucket on the picnic table.

The Sick Goat first tells you to ignore Oregon, nothing there, then gives you bad advice later on about the wonderful place.

Go to Lassen. If you have never been there it is a shame to miss it. From there it is an easier run up through Mt. Shasta than up through the Lava Fields (think High Desert, not very scenic)

I would not go further north on 97 than state hiway 58, which cuts across the lower Cascades to Eugene, then on to the coast out of Eugene to Florence

However (again in rebuttal to Mr. No It All) Bend is a rather cool town. Not in temperature in summer, but in ambience. Just in my view the distances involved north of the 58 cutoff don't justify the route.

And his final comment about Oregon "beaches"
Southern Oregon is known for beautiful coast, but it is pretty rugged. Hardly beach country in the context we Californians know it.

Great country, especially in summer. Go for it!!

1bobo - 6-25-2020 at 05:03 PM

I believe the Park is still closed, and for sure all the campgrounds around here are still closed. Makes the fire danger alarming with all the people illegally camping along the back roads.

thebajarunner - 6-25-2020 at 05:15 PM

Lassen website says fully open
All campgrounds will be open by tomorrow June 26
As to "illegal camping along the back roads"
if it is public land, national forest, Bureau of Land Management (need to spell that out these days) and not posted it is legal to camp.
I agree about fire danger, but you can't fix stupid.
People need to be careful with fire everywhere, legal or not.

JZ - 6-25-2020 at 05:26 PM

Noted on the Lava Beds. Are you guys talking about Lassen Volcanic National Park?

Is this the best/most scenic route?

Yes, that’s what they are talking about.
Climb the mountain too. It’s only a half day to the summit and back, maybe 2,000 ft vertical. Hike or jog up before dawn, and eat your breakfast on summit watching the sunrise.

JZ - 6-25-2020 at 06:04 PM

Ok, the route is coming together.

Thinking of camping at Lassen NP.

mtgoat666 - 6-25-2020 at 06:33 PM

Some good donuts in Eugene: dizzy dean’s donuts, and voodoo donuts. Voodoo in Eugene not as fun as the original in Portland, but still worth a stop.

windgrrl - 6-25-2020 at 07:14 PM

The Ashland area is really nice, fun twisty highway. Lots to see and explore in the historic towns and state parks along the Scenic Columbia Gorge.

The highway on the Washington Side is a little less hectic and nicely winding. Hood River and the Dalles have lots of shops and restaurants.

The Gorge is also fruit orchard, volcano and wine country. The Maryhill Winery has bought in some big name concerts in the past and features live music each week. Really nice to relax and enjoy the view up there.

It’s a wind Mecca so lots of wind sports taking place. Also lots of other outdoor sports, mountain biking, hiking, skiing, white water rafting, sailing, fishing, etc. There’s a fair amount of camping along the interstate, but it can be windy and noisy due to the constant train travel. There are a few other state and commercial campgrounds near Stevenson and Maryhill that are away from the highway.

The scenery flattens out and the climate gets very hot And dry east of Maryhill. Haven’t been there in a few years, but Apparently it was the law on the Oregon side that jockeys pumped your gas. The Biggs intersection at Maryhill will take you south to Bend.

Probably wouldn't work out for this trip, but an experienced boat guy like you would probably enjoy crossing the bar when the outgoing Columbia River meets a strong incoming tide. I did that on a salmon charter a few years back...what a ride!

Jet boat rides on a river are for knuckle draggers. If you want to experience a river, learn to canoe/kayak, or float it on a raft with a tour company.
Jet boats on rivers are an abomination, noisy intrusion into what should be a wilderness experience, jet boats on a river are a low-brow carnival ride.

brucedog - 6-26-2020 at 08:40 AM

Lots of good advice above. The only thing I can add is that finding a campsite on the coast in the summer can be challenging. there are certainly lots of opportunities for dispersed camping if you don't need a proper site. Have fun in our beautiful state!

If you have time to venture past Bend you can visit Hood River 2.5 hours north :-)

Stay in the basement with Sleepy Joe

I have ridden in a Cigarette off shore racer across Biscayne Bay
And taught myself to kayak in the fast moving tides at La Gringa
Both were a real hoot!
And Gold Beach is not exactly a quiet little spot along the stream
That ride is great and not bothering anyone (except cellar dwellers)

Debating whether to bring the KTMs or not. Worth it?

Where would you suggest riding? The dunes on the coast coast would be one place.

The dunes north of Coos Bay to Winchester Bay are a dune riders Mecca and bring crowds from all States around. A friend is a Doctor at a hospital in nearby Reedsport and their ER does a huge business in busted up riders.
No need to bring bikes or Quads, many rental places along 101.

Continuing to research the area. Someone told me Detroit Lake was very nice. It's about 1.5 from Bend.

Checked it out on Google Earth and it looks great. They rent small boats there. Anyone been out on the lake?

Up 395 east of Carson city check out Virgina City. Above Susanville go to Likely Place Golf and Rv park. They have cabins avail. on a beautiful Golf Coarse. several area lakes and pet friendly.
Fun place in that area.

My home is about 40 miles south of the Oregon border near Mt. Shasta city, CA. I would strongly recommend postponing your trip to Oregon. We have been buried in smoke from all the fires for the last three weeks. In fact all National Forests are closed to entry. There are many, many, beautiful places to see here in Northern California and many parts of Oregon. Portland, Oregon is being ruined by the rioters (to hell with them). My suggestion is try Northern California and Oregon next year during September or early October when the skies are clear. The Temperatures will be beautiful and the Oregon coast will have much less fog if you travel that direction. Oregon folks are great and many are Baja snowbirds. Good Luck !!
