HUMVEE

KRB - 7-15-2020 at 01:09 PM

Has anyone driven a US plated and registered military surplus HMVEE across the boarder into Baja?

If so any problems?

motoged - 7-15-2020 at 01:51 PM

Driving over a boarder could bring problems....but crossing the border into Mexico is not a good idea with Covid.....

Is it essential travel?

Remember, Canadians spell things phunny!

Seems like I recall reading years ago that military type vehicles are not allowed, except for use by the military. The military uses humvees to combat drug interdiction, and I had the impression that they don't want to have cartels posing as military. I am unable to verify that, and I don't want to spread any misinformation. My suggestion is to research carefully before attempting to take a humvee to Mexico.

They stick closer to norms common in English-speaking world outside the US of A. But "boarder" is something new.

David K - 7-15-2020 at 03:25 PM

Maybe paint it so no camo shows and remove the machine gun?
Plenty of H1 Hummers been to Baja. Ken Bondy's nice red one comes to mind.
German Unimogs and Swiss Penzgauers (sp?) have been seen in Baja... I think those were military rigs originally?

AKgringo - 7-15-2020 at 03:26 PM

I couldn't find the thread, but I remember this was discussed here before, but it was about a standard truck that had a camo paint job similar to some military vehicles. It is something to consider!

I haul my M1102 (humvee) trailer in baja, still original desert tan, just replaced the wheels with more practical trailer rims/tires.
I would not try a military hummer if you have not repainted it and got rid of the overkill tires. They aren't very comfortable or economical compared to late model 4x4s, why would you want to drive one?

I would like to get a HMVEE down for beech launching our boat

"Boarder" is probably the most misspelled word on Nomads.... when meaning "border".

Good intentions with poor execution.

:light:
Ranks right up there with...
Guerrero Negro [not: Guerro]
Los Barriles [not: Barilles]
Puertecitos [not: Puertocitos]
Alfonsina's [not: Alphonsina's]
San Quintín [not: Quentin]
Santo Tomás [not: Thomas]
Santa Rosalillita [not: Rosaliita]
and of course...
Rancho Santa Ynez or Inés* [not: Ynes, Inez, Innez, etc.]

*The owners preferred 'Ynez' but Inés is correct Spanish and they don't fuss about which is right.

Peeps told you it might be a problem. You will only know if you try. Just do it.

If you still want to yak with the internet peanut gallery, then try asking on the steel soldier forum, that us where all the surplus vehicle nerds hang out and chat....

The paint is not an issue. The machine gun might be. Unimogs and Pinzgauers (thats the sp) are no military rigs at all. You can`t export a military Unimog from Germany w/o an requested export license making sure you converted it to a civil version. :fire:

pacificobob - 9-6-2020 at 06:14 AM

in rural cartel controlled areas in chihuahua and durango i have seen plenty being driven by civilians.

I would not want to be driving around in that area in a vehicle that is desirable to the cartel, or could be mistaken for one of theirs!

CasaMaximus - 9-17-2020 at 10:08 PM

Your Hummer will last as long as long as you can pay armed security to watch it. Best of luck.

i imported a unimog 1300 [ german army] very easy, no such permitting needed that i remember. maybe the customs broker did it without my knowledge.
