This was my first adventure in Baja. My son was finishing his degree at the U of A and was asked to be part of a dig in the dry lake called Chapala.
Being a good son he asked his parents and girlfriend if they would like to help, read, cook, wash dishes and dig latrines. We like fools said Great.
It was the end of Oct., the dry lake wasn't, it was cold and windy.
After three weeks some locals came to visit our camp site. They told an amazing story. During the last rains a rancher had discovered mammoth bones in
his creek bed. They wanted to have our experts check them out. The van we were driving would not carry everyone who wanted to go so it was decided
that eight of us could squeeze in.
I was in the back and lost track of our exact movements. We did go north to around Marmol and found a ranch where a rancher showed us the bones. There
the were two tusks, a skull, and teeth in the creek. We had a Mexican archaeological student with us who said he would report it to the university in
Ensenada. In the excitement on the way back to camp no one noticed which road or driveway was the correct one.
So does anyone else know about the mammoth around Marmol?

After a long trip up the length of Baja we are now home,good news Janet and I found the resting place of the great mammoth of Marmol. I will issue a
report shortly.
Jim last posted here on July 4, 2007 and I cannot find any additional "report"... Anyone know Jim & Janet or know the "rest of the story"???

I do not know the rest of that story,
but found a few more Mammoth bones here in South Dakota.
