global entry? Sentri?

verichip - 10-20-2020 at 02:16 PM

Is global entry the best $100 card to cut the pedestrian line? Is global entry the card that also works at air ports?

Is standing in line at the TJ crossing for hours the best and fastest way to catch Corona virus?

The question is,
best card for line cutting??????????????

JZ - 10-20-2020 at 02:38 PM

GE unless you have minor children. Minor children are free w/Sentri.

apple - 10-20-2020 at 02:48 PM

In my experience, GE applications seem to get processed much more quickly than SENTRI. They both have basically the same benefits, and get you TSA-precheck and faster custom screenings at airports.

It's not really "line cutting" - you just go to the appropriate line. So happens the SENTRI/GOES line is much shorter.

BajaMama - 10-21-2020 at 09:07 AM

If you don't already have SENTRI or Global Entry, it may take a while to process a new application. I had SENTRI which included GE & TSA-Pre, I renewed a few months ago, and just applied for GE as it also included SENTRI and TSA-Pre but was only $100 to renew. I got my approval in two days and my SENTRI card a week later. My husband applied in mid-August and has not heard anything, only crickets.

It's taking the same amount of time to get pre approved for both, and it can take close or more than a year.

eguillermo - 10-21-2020 at 05:35 PM

I applied for Sentri almost a solid year before also applying for GE.

The interview for Sentri was approved only a couple months before GE one, AND the soonest Sentri interview is well into 2021, at SD and Calexico locations not exactly convenient for a central CA nomad.

I've got the GE interview scheduled for this Friday at SFO, at last!

And have realized: with covid, this is probably the first year ever that my truck and I wouldn't end up waiting hours in a line anyway! :D

(Is it right to assume that lines getting back in are nothing like normal?)

lizard lips - 10-21-2020 at 06:21 PM

I have had GE for years especially because I fly the world a lot and when returning to the US I don't have to stand in line. The only downside is once I go through and show my GE I still have to wait for my luggage.

Why would you apply for both?

eguillermo - 10-22-2020 at 08:51 AM

Started with just Sentri because it was all I knew about. When, after a year, there was no response at all on my application, I finally asked some questions and learned about GE -- including that it can be faster, which it turned out to be.

I certainly don't want both, just one. First credential to the finish line -- first thing that might relieve the dreadful and depressing waste of time comprised of bumper-to-bumpering for three hours at an idle while waiting for two minutes of a border guard's attention -- wins.

eguillermo - 10-26-2020 at 08:28 AM

With my GE interview coming up this Friday, I realized: aside from inspecting my various proofs of citizenship and residence, I have no idea what they might ask me.

What do they ask? Do they really interrogate people, or is it mainly a formality to verify your identity?

RocketJSquirrel - 10-26-2020 at 09:02 AM

They tied me in a chair and slapped me around a bit, then said I "passed".

A clear case of squirrel-ism.

Nah, they asked mostly things to be sure they had the right documents. I think if you are polite and mildly deferential, you'll find them facilitative and friendly. Nice people, just doing their job.

edit for spelling...

Squirrel-ism

AKgringo - 10-26-2020 at 09:45 AM

Squirrel, did they ask you why your kind can't make up their mind which side of the road they are running to? :wow:

[Edited on 10-26-2020 by AKgringo]

BajaTed - 10-26-2020 at 11:21 AM

Have you ever been arrested for or convicted of a felony???
Do you have any tax liens?
Do you owe past due child support or alimony?
Ever had a security clearance taken away?

They ask these types of questions and they already know what the answers should be, but want to see if you will lie to them anyway.

RocketJSquirrel - 10-26-2020 at 11:24 AM

Geez, they didn't ask me any of that stuff. But possibly because I have had FBI clearances for 40 years, for occupational requirements. Maybe they know that.

DosMars - 10-26-2020 at 12:19 PM

The family are all provisionally accepted to SENTRI and are waiting on interviews. I've been logging in daily to bump up our interview slot as best I could, but realized last week that I screwed up. I originally had a group interview date for August 2021, but was able to bump the date up to late June. What I didn't realize at the time was that I had bumped up my interview date to a single opening, losing the family slot.

After doing some research, I've decided to keep my SENTRI slot and continue to bump up the interview date as earlier slots become available and get the rest of the family into the Global entry program.

What I'm having difficulty finding out: is it possible to switch the rest of the family over to Global from SENTRI and keep all the info I've already uploaded? Or do I have to cancel SENTRI and start over with Global?

Anyone have experience with this or know of a source I can reference? I'm not seeing anything on the TTP site, other than "you may also be eligible for" with nowhere to click...

Edit: it definitely pays to log on and check for cancelations. After deciding to go this route, I was able to bump up my slot from June, to May, to April and finally to mid-November. If all goes well, in 24 days I'll have my fast-pass!

When I subscribed to Appointment Scanner, I was amazed at all the appointments that showed up, including the next day.

DosMars - 10-26-2020 at 02:09 PM

O.K., I was able to speak with a human at the SENTRI interview location in Calexico.
Short answer -they have to cancel their appointments before registering for Global entry, which (as she pointed out) could take up to 18 months to be conditionally approved.
I cancelled appointments for each and could then select Global, for which they were both immediately conditionally approved. Interviews for both kids set for Dec. 26.

tjsue - 10-26-2020 at 04:57 PM

I'm going to start checking around midnight for cancellations. It would be nice to have it before next June.

DosMars - 10-27-2020 at 09:45 AM

Keep the tab open and check in from time to time. I found most openings in the mornings, but happened on that Opening for next month just randomly checking in.
You’ve got to be quick with your click! Lot’s of people jonesing for those early slots!

Interview

John M - 10-27-2020 at 04:56 PM

We traveled to San Diego the night before to get to the border in Otay Mesa for a 6:00 a.m. interview. Only ones there - until about 5 minutes to 6:00 then the flood gate opened and soon there were 20+ folks waiting for a 6:00 a.m. interview.....

We were called in pretty quickly and the interview was basically - "Is everything on your application correct" Yep - interview over - I don't recall but think they took either fingerprints or photo - (heck, maybe neither) and we were out of there.

Maybe it helped that our applications were truthful - we had no background issues that might have raised a red flag - in our view.

JZ - 10-27-2020 at 06:47 PM

I did my interview at LAX. It was probably a 45 min wait, although I was 15 mins early.

Kids did theirs at the new location outside LAX. 15 min wait.

All interviews were done in 5 mins give or take.

I had it for two weeks, and cancelled it. Lot of appointments showed up every day, but unless you're on your computer 24/7, and continually logged into the TT website, you can't get one.

I'm not up early in the morning, unless I have to go somewhere, and wouldn't have time to turn on my computer. But...when my cats wake me at 3am to eat, I may try then, if I remember.

I changed my password on the TTP, so I'll try from my phone when I wake up during the night.

DosMars - 10-28-2020 at 10:51 AM

I don’t know if the middle of the night or wee hours of the morning will help. It seemed like when someone cancels, their slot opens up. After getting confirmation that my earlier date was accepted, I went back and saw my old spot open up. As I refreshed I watched my old spot get snapped up.
I was checking in around 7:15-7:30 in the morning. There may have been better slots earlier but I’m very happy with the progress I made going this route.

tjsue - 10-28-2020 at 10:58 AM

When I had appointment scanner, the slots would open up at all hours of the day and night. I'll see if I have any luck with changing it on my phone, but even if I don't get an earlier one, at least I still have my June appt.

tjsue - 10-28-2020 at 11:01 AM

These appointments are from when I had a subscription to appointment scanner, so you can see that they open up randomly.

I managed to move up to an April appointment from the one in June. I'll keep checking to see if I can move up anymore.

tjsue - 10-30-2020 at 03:39 PM

Thanks to DosMars for the tip about getting an earlier interview for GE. In less than a week, I bumped it from next June to next April, to next week.

I really appreciate the tip!

DosMars - 10-30-2020 at 10:00 PM

Awesome! I was wondering if I could bump it up any further but decided not to push my luck...

tjsue - 10-31-2020 at 09:23 AM

I just kept checking every time I was online, and they even had appointments for yesterday when I was online. It was interesting, because the appointments would show up from sometime next year, to none, to next week.

DosMars - 11-1-2020 at 09:26 AM

Are you looking at GE or SENTRI appointments? I'm considering trying to get the kids in earlier for Global up near LAX, but may wait unless I can grab a Saturday.

tjsue - 11-1-2020 at 10:18 AM

I just looked where it says, "reschedule interview." All of the interview sites will show up in each state, and you just pick the one that you want, and see if there are any dates.

Don Jorge - 11-1-2020 at 02:15 PM

Using appointment scanner I was able to move a March 2021 appointment up till Nov 2, 2020, tomorrow morning at Otay.

Thanks for sharing that information about Appointment Scanner here on Nomads!

tjsue - 11-1-2020 at 04:34 PM

Thanks to DosMars, I was able to do it without Appointment Scanner, and saved $15.

With Appointment Scanner, you have to wait for the appointments to show up in your email/text, then go into the TTP website. But by staying logged into the TTP website while I was already online, I saw the appointments right away, and bypassed all the other people looking for earlier appointments.

FWIW, Received the Sentri and GE approval this morning.

Although I had applied only for Sentri for myself and vehicle, the agent in charge asked if I would like to add Global Entry. Yes please.

Photo, fingerprints, a few basic questions answered and 97 dollars later it is done. Sentri for me and truck at teh border and GE for flying internationally. They mail the cards within 2 weeks they say. Im stoked.

So, even if you do not sign up for GE at first they give you the option of getting it during the process. Very nice. Thanks again to those who posted their experiences. It helped!

tjsue - 11-2-2020 at 05:56 PM

My appointment is at 5:15 on Thursday, and I plan to leave at 3 to get there early depending on traffic, and park in a lot.

That's great. This thread is very valuable.

tjsue - 11-2-2020 at 09:05 PM

I'd rather get there very early, than get stuck in traffic and be late.

DosMars - 11-4-2020 at 12:19 PM

Smart. With all the effort to get to this point I took the day off on the 17th for my 11:45 appointment.
Anyplace close to Otay Mesa to get a good al pastor burrito?

tjsue - 11-4-2020 at 12:27 PM

That I don't know, but maybe someone else does.

tjsue - 11-5-2020 at 08:13 PM

I had my interview today, and I literally got grilled! I didn't have copies of my pay stubs, because I'm working. When the agent asked why, I just told her that I worked at the Convention Center and the Stadium. So she said, ok, I understand. I didn't have copies of my bank statements with me, there was nothing online that said to bring them, but I was able to bring one of them up on my phone.

So even though I made a couple of mistakes 7 years ago (getting in the Sentri lane by accident, & bringing chicken across the border), she recommended for approval, but she said the final decision will come from the higher ups, and I'll know in a month.

It cost me $5 to park, and I just parked in the first lot. Also, the only places to eat around there are fast food, so your burrito will have to wait.

Ya, you gotta bring docs with you. You need to read the instructions before you go, so you take what you need. Read the instructions.

tjsue - 11-5-2020 at 08:53 PM

I read the instructions. Nothing was said about bringing bank statements or pay stubs, otherwise I would have brought them.

DosMars - 11-6-2020 at 11:58 AM

Thanks for posting about the needed documents. I just looked at the special instructions and it only mentions passport, drivers licence and proof of residency if different from your other documentation.
Nothing about bank records or pay stubs? Anybody else need these documents? Are those the only two other documents they asked for? I'm putting together an envelope to bring with me, want to make sure everything is in there.
Do they do an inspection of the vehicle you're registering?

Bajazly - 11-6-2020 at 12:20 PM

They listed and looked at pretty close bank statements and pay stubs last year when I went in. Since I had not had paycheck in ages I had to show and argue a 5 year consulting contract I have but had not yet started billing.

Inspection of vehicle may or may not happen the first time you cross back into the US but does not happen at the interview. Don't forget registration and proof of insurance at the interview tho, I had to go back to the truck and get mine.

[Edited on 11-6-2020 by Bajazly]

DosMars - 11-6-2020 at 12:31 PM

Are the bank statements and pay stubs required for Global Entry? I don't see anywhere in my SENTRI information where they tell you to bring them.

tjsue - 11-6-2020 at 05:05 PM

I think it may depend on whoever interviews you.

I brought what the website asked for, and also told the officer that interviewed me that, plus she interrogated me over 30 minutes.

She asked asked me the following:

Why didn't I bring all the documents, and I should know because I was in the program before.
Proof of income, proof of residence, driver's license, bank statements, Passport card, and passport (for Global Entry).

Pay stubs, (of which I have none) and I told her that I wasn't working right now. When she asked why, I told her that I was working at the Convention Center, Stadium, and Manchester Grand Hyatt, and that apparently satisfied her.

Wanted to know why I wanted a GE card, and told her that it was much easier to cross the border with it, since I have ongoing dental work. Then she wanted to know the name of my dentist, so I gave her a business card of the office with the owner's name on it.

There were only three officers working, and I did notice that the male officer didn't spend as much time on the interview that he was doing. Your vehicle won't get inspected until you return from Mexico, and they'll just send you to secondary.

I got an email this afternoon that I was approved, and I'm making a document with everything on it that I need to bring for my renewal in 2025.

I didn't add my van, because I plan to downsize to either a Ford Escape or a Honda CRV next year.

Yes, I was referring to GE but couldn't hurt to have more than you need when you are there.

tjsue - 11-6-2020 at 07:48 PM

I managed to pull one of my statements up on my phone, and that satisfied her. With my credit union account, they don't show up on my phone, but the other account has more money in it, anyway.

tjsue - 11-15-2020 at 10:00 PM

From what I can tell it's only when you start the app as Sentri. Not starting as GE and adding a car for Sentri use.

Here is what it said regarding an interview on a Sentri app:

Details of your employment or your financial support (e.g. your recent tax return, a salary slip or if you are self employed your business license, tax information and bank statements)

tjsue - 11-17-2020 at 10:17 AM

I applied for GE, (replacing my expired Sentri) and all my financial information was asked for, even though it wasn't on the website.

It all depends on who interviews you, and the officer wanted to see it. All I was able to show her was proof of my SS retirement dd, and one bank statement. That was all I could pull up on my phone.

If she had persisted, I would have brought the paper copies back in another visit.

DosMars - 11-19-2020 at 09:38 PM

Had my interview today. Took the day off and gave my self 3 hours to get down to Chulla Vista. Waited around an hour, then checked in for the interview. I brought everything mentioned above, but forgot my auto insurance card in the car! Worked out o.k. as the only things they looked at were my passport and drivers license.
Very short interview, just the basics to veryfy evrything was current. Paid for Global Entry while I was there, in and out in 15 minutes.
Oh, and Royal Rooster on Mission Bay has some bomb burritos!

I'm trying to get my buddies to sign up and hit that refresh button on the reschedule interview section. Definitely worth it to jump up from September to June to May to today in a matter of days.

tjsue - 11-20-2020 at 01:14 PM

Yes, just like I said, what they want to look at is at the discretion of the officer. And I just happened to get one that wanted to see everything.

DosMars - 12-13-2020 at 08:45 AM

So I just got an email from a friend. She applied for SENTRI a week ago and just got her notification that she's been accepted into the program. She already had GLOBAL so it was just $40 to register her vehicle, no interview needed.
That seems like a very viable workaround for those who are currently sitting on a year-long wait for a SENTRI interview. As mentioned up-thread, GLOBAL interviews are much easier to come by.

tjsue - 12-13-2020 at 12:05 PM

It's a year's wait for an interview if you've never had a Sentri/Global Entry before, or had an expired card.

My Sentri was expired, so I had to go through the entire process again, and wait for preapproval.

RocketJSquirrel - 12-13-2020 at 01:18 PM

Thanks TjSue, Your post reminded me to set an alarm on my calendar, to start the process (or at least thinking about it) one year ahead of time.

Bajazly - 12-13-2020 at 01:59 PM

About 4 years ago my buddy who worked at HP and traveled to SE Asia 6 or more times year and comes to Baja 3 or 4 times a year told me about GE. He said he was going to do it but the interviews are always like 6 months out. A couple years ago after a 9 hour crossing back to the US I applied the next day, 6 weeks later I had mine. To this day he still waits for hours to cross back north.

Point is, no real good reason to wait to apply. It is what it is and until you actually apply you will still be fretting about the long wait for an interview and using that as an excuse to not do it.

RocketJSquirrel - 12-13-2020 at 02:10 PM

Bajazly is right. I can't count the number of hours I spent idling and fraying my nerves in the "Ready" lane. Many many more hours than I spent organizing my Global Entry card.

TMW - 12-13-2020 at 02:30 PM

What exactly does a Global Entry card let you do? Do you just drive up the Sentri lane or is there a lane that says Global Entry? I normally come back thru Tecate which usually is one line splitting into two gates.

JZ - 12-13-2020 at 03:40 PM

GE lets you use the Sentri lane.

We typically pass a couple thousand cars and cross in less than 15 mins.

Bingo! That's what made me finally pull the trigger. I have a group of buddies I've been trying to explain this to who keep putting it off. I'm looking forward to giving them progress reports on my way home after I leave them in line. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those times I will be crawling into bed at home by the time they're creeping up on the crossing...

I applied in October of 2019, and got my conditional approval in July of 2020, so that time period sounds about right.

JZ - 12-14-2020 at 02:57 PM

My approval took 2-3 months. Six weeks for the kids.

About 2 months to schedule interviews. Could have done it in a week if I drove to the border.

Just had my interview, it was originally scheduled in May, but canceled due to COVID. I did it near LAX, couldn’t have been easier, I parked and was not in the building for 20 minutes before I was interviewed and left. Sadly I don’t think I’ll have my card before my Xmas trip, but looking forward to not waiting in line anymore. What pushed me over the edge was being able to Register my truck with a camper on it. This was not possible back in the early days of Sentri.

tjsue - 12-15-2020 at 11:59 AM

After I got approved, I had my card within a week, so you should have yours before your XMAS trip.

Where is the shortest line for an appointment? Around San Diego that is?

You can't make an appointment until you're conditionally approved, and you'll get an email when that happens. There's only one place in San Diego for interviews, and that's the Otay Mesa office.

I don't know re: SENTRI, but my wife did her GE interview at Lindbergh Field (SAN).

That office has been closed, along with the Sentri office at the San Ysidro border. The only one in San Diego is in Otay.

Too bad! It was super easy in and out.

From the time you paid your money until the you got an email to set up an appointment. How many days weeks months went by?

10 days no email. how many more?

Man the TJTQ line looks like a super spreader event and a half.

verichip- for me I filled out online form and paid in Jan 2020. Didn't get an email for an appointment unitl Dec 2020.

11 months before you could make an appointment, then a few more months to go to the appointment?

jamiec - 1-20-2021 at 12:13 PM

Yes, 11 months but once I was approved and received the email, it was only 1 week to get the appointment in San Francisco.

A co-worker of mine had to wait a couple of months for her appointment at LAX
