Speaking of Coco.....

I stopped by there on the 23rd of October. I had planned on camping there, but didn't make it past San Felipe on the 22nd. I thought it would be better to start a new thread, rather than hijack the other!

I did not stay very long, and there was zero other traffic on his old road that day. He looked good, even seemed that he has lost a bit of weight, but that could be good, or bad for someone with medical issues.

He has no transportation at this time, the Dodge is not going to be repaired. He is hopeful that he will have another, smaller truck soon, and perhaps already does by now.

I meant to ask if he had any shirts to sell, but forgot to while I was there. He must have some money coming in, or is collecting some donated work, because he plans to have a spot over on the new pavement leveled, and start moving and re-building his camp by January.

I hope it works out for him, but bumping along the old dirt road, it was impossible to miss his camp. Even though there is far more traffic on MX 5 now, I don't know how many cars will even notice the new camp, much less slow down and check it out!

It was my understanding that the Go Fund Me that Larry Smith was running a couple months ago was for the purpose of a new truck. IIRC, it raised over 10k.

No update from Coco for that?

when i was kid traveling around the USA, the best freak shows had billboards every 50 miles, so you knew hours in advance where to stop to take a pee break, buy some odd/local junk food, and ooh and aah at the sideshows

I remember driving through South Dakota, seeing signs for "Wall Drug" for many miles before reaching Wall, SD. I think those signs are pretty famous like the old Burma Shave signs.

How does that work? He buys the land? I think that's pretty ambitious at his age, and for what gain. I agree - he needs a few signs offering accommodations, camping, cold drinks. Maybe he could have a small store - sell donated books, eclectic trinkets, his decals - does Coco make anything? carvings, metal sculpture? With a GoFundMe we could make a bunch of Bajanomad t-shirts - exclusively sold at Coco's.

There has been a ranch serving travelers there for 60 years, on and off! A construction camp was there before the highway was finished and it has excellent water from a big, deep well.

Here is an article I wrote about Las Arrastras, which has been abandoned since about when Coco began his corner a few miles south.

Good suggestion DK. A convenient stop over offering snacks, tacos, and above all, cerveza’s. One helper would of course be required, but there should be enough business to support that.

A good business example from back in the day when the Serenidad and private aviation were at their peak, aircraft on their way farther south would hit Mulege and the Serenidad about lunch time and stop in. After a generous sampling of a gigantic Alejandro Margarita during lunch led to many more, very few were in any condition to continue south and wound up staying for lunch, dinner, and breakfast the next day before continuing on. Now that is a good model for a sound business plan.

I know that when the road work was going on hard and heavy, some of the workers would meet at his place after their shift. There are still quite a few pieces of equipment at the yard on the old road, so I wonder if they are donating tractor time?

Maybe he is trading his panty collection for dirt work? Maybe one of you pantie connoisseurs could answer this, do the stains add, or subtract from the value?

Just posted on the San Felipe Chatter Facebook page, from Larry Smith:

We delivered Coco's new truck yesterday. He was elated, crying. A huge thanks to all who contributed to this effort. DirtCo has offered a very substantial donation to this effort through t-shirt sales which can be found here if interested. They also provided a professional photographer so better pictures are coming.
