Respectfully noting Veterans Day

thebajarunner - 11-11-2020 at 05:31 PM

Well, if no one else is going to thank us, I guess I will thank all of the vets.
Pretty bleak celebration around here
Local parades cancelled
Local ceremonies in the park cancelled.

I'm wondering how many honorably discharged vets live in Baja/Mexico.
Far from VA medical, if needed.
Thanks for your (our) service and sacrifices.
It is still a great country, no matter who gets elected....

I was just thinking the same thing! I don't live in Baja, but I am down here now.

My m.o.s. was cavalry, so "Garry Owen!"

i will never regret anything more than my "service". i was drafted and ashamed of the whole episode. it was a pointless war...but aren't most? Americans should entertain the notion of being a bit less enthusiastic about armed conflict.

AKgringo - 11-11-2020 at 06:09 PM

I was also a draftee, but decided to take the assignment seriously and see what comes of it. I did nothing heroic, and did not enjoy all aspects of my tour of duty, but I have no reason not to take pride in my service!

I suspect you and I had different views about life before we were drafted!

TMW - 11-11-2020 at 06:09 PM

No body is enthusiastic about armed conflict that I know of. The men I know that have faced combat don't want to ever do it again. They usually do it because it was their duty. The pain and suffering of those who lost body parts is terrible as is those with mental issues. My heart goes out to all of them. I never had to shoot at anyone since I served on a ship and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The benefits of being a vet are pretty good too. I am proud to have served.

Happy Veterans Day to all who served.

thebajarunner - 11-11-2020 at 06:18 PM

The Navy was a true blessing for me.
Fun? Not much
Hard work? Yeah, and lots of it.
Damaged parts....
2 years as projectileman on a 5 inch gun left me deaf as a stone
(maybe a dozen years of Baja off road racing helped)
Colon cancer... thanks to my ship, The Boxer, being flag ship for the atomic tests in Bikini and Eniwitok
Three less teeth when I came home.... Naval medicine at its worst.

But I went in a wise guy 18 year old on academic probation at the university, came out with a different view of life and graduated with honors

So, proud to have served, proud of my time spent, would not have it any other way.

Anchors aweigh my boys.....

My youngest sisters husband (not at the time) was drafted into the Army and sent to Vietnam for 13 months. He installed air conditioners and serviced them. This is a guy who took electrical/electronics in high school. Went 2 years to Devry Technical school and was working for NBC NY as a broadcast engineer. I think they could have found a better place for him like maybe working on communications equipment. But it is what it is and he was for the most part out of harms way.

Happy Veterans Day to all the veterans. Thank you for your service.

bajarich - 11-11-2020 at 11:21 PM

I joined the Navy in '69 rather than be drafted. 'Flew as an radar operator in P3 Patrol planes. Lucky we were never shot at doing shipping surveilance off Vietnam. Came home in one piece. I don't live in Baja either but have been making anual trips there since 1990.

Thank you all veterans! One of my sons is in the Air Force and I could not be prouder!

Short story: After he finished boot camp, I flew to San Antonio to attend his graduation. Having heard how tough boot camp is, one of my questions was How hard is it?

He looked me right in the eye, and without a moment's hesitation, answered:

After you Mom, a piece of cake!

Hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaa

I was a single Mom of two boys. There was NO way they were going to lose respect of me on my watch. What an answer!

Happy Veteran's day, every day, to all of you who serve(d).

There was a birthday a few days ago

Howard - 11-12-2020 at 09:12 AM

It seems like you patriots have forgotten to mention the November 10th birthday.

Anyone, anyone? Lee?

Hey man, Happy belated Birthday, Marine. Not everyone celebrates the 10th -- most Marines do, though.

Semper Fi.

To those who served and those we lost, thank you for serving our country. You (we) are the true Patriots.

I was a Navy E3 at Pearl Harbor in 1959. The Marine NCO club was walking distance from our ship. The Marines let us drink at the club even though we were below rank. Really good guys. Found out late they were mostly Chasers and brig guards.
