Mexican authorities arrested several individuals this week under charges of Organized Crime - Crimes Against the Environment. These charges relate to
the trafficking of totoaba swim bladders and carry a sentence of possible jail time.
This is the first time that charges of this nature have been applied in Mexico.
Totoaba poaching is the primary cause of the decline of the vaquita - the world’s most endangered marine mammal, which is endemic to a small region
in Mexico’s Upper Gulf of California. Vaquitas, which are approximately the same size as totoabas, become entangled in the deadly illegal nets and
drown.
There are less than 20 vaquitas left alive.
Sea Shepherd applauds the Attorney General’s Office and Mexican authorities for their swift action and continued commitment to protecting the
vaquita through the prosecution of crimes relating to totoaba trafficking.
