New way of filming single track rides in Baja

Just borrowed a skydio drone from a friend. It's amazing. I will have some footage of our daughter out on our track soon.. but I've now got one on order. Pretty sweet technology, and the video quality is great.

Would love to see the footage. You are going to make a lot of memories with it. How easy was it for you to learn?

I got mine a couple weeks back. Took 6 months. Haven't had a chance to get great motion shots.

when gopro was a new thing i put one on my helmet, took a bunch of video.
i quickly discovered i had very little interest in viewing them. my riding pals have zero interest in watching video of guys riding motorbikes...rather go riding than watch videos.....but thats just us.

That's some amazing footage and even better looking trail. Any Arizona riders on here want to share some tracks or show a guy around? Have bike will travel and buy beer...

Some years ago I rode from Catavina hotel to Santa Maria mission solo with a helmet cam and recorded the in and out trip. When my ride group caught up the next day, I was thrilled to hook my system up to the tv (its own accomplishment ) and invite them to bring their beer and watch....expecting them to be attentive, appreciative, and generally interested (these were the days when very few were doing helmet cams....a novelty ).


They wanted me to fast forward or showed diminishing interest rather quickly.... bunch of coneheads.

I like to watch ride vids, but don't do them anymore as recording dictates the ride rather than the ride itself.

Not everyone like watching home movies....except the recording artiste ... :coolup:

About six years ago, I did a helmet cam run at Sugar Bowl ski area. I watched it once, and tried to explain to a fellow viewer that the terrain was much steeper than it appears on the video, but it was a tough sell.

I nailed the run, but the exhilaration of the steep, and speed on the groomed runs just didn't come through! A drone like the one the bikers used would be better, but they are not allowed at the ski area.

Here is a skiing one. Remember, the drone is flying and filming all by itself.

I'm sorry to hear you were too dumb to realize that a video needs to be edited for it to be interesting. Your lack of skill means you wasted $500 on a paper weight.

This video was posted to show what the drone is capable of, not for the quality of presentation format.

At least Goat makes an attempt at being clever in his insults. You two are just sad and mad at the world.

Currently in the market for a drone, I've looked at the reviews for the skydio and it seems to have some drawbacks compared to the DJI's even though it looks like its AI is pretty good.

The technology is interesting. GoPro has also spent a lot of money on software to help address the editing issue. AI will continue to make it better.

99% of gopro amateur sport videos and travel videos are too long. If you cant tell your story in 30 seconds or less, then you are a loser!

Take a lesson from tv commercials! Keep it short!

All people want to see is dramatic action, crashes and near misses (but it never hurts to throw in a few boob shots, if nice boobs). No one ever wants to see or hear a narrator.

I have a couple DJI drones.

They have different strengths. DJI is fantastic for over landscape shots and can't be matched by Skydio on this. DJI is meant to be flown manually. It does have some spectacular features, like Tap Fly, which let's it automatically fly to any subject you tap on the screen. I did a lot of the close up rock shots in the video below using Tap Fly.

Skydio is the best in the world at autonomous subject tracking. It is years ahead of DJI at this.

First thought - wow. Now that is a drone tech for the first timers.
Second - crash avoidance tech must outrageously good
Third - I have never considered how you post video here??? Took a bit of testing with cut/paste.... got it now.

I still can't figure out the technical wizardry for this one, single shot, audio gets post p work of course but this is just wild.

That is one of the small FPV drones that ppl use for racing. The guy is wearing goggles, and is exceedingly good at flying it.

I think I like watching videos more then I would making them. When I ride I just want to be in the moment and enjoy the trail. A drone would be nice to get some areal shots of surrounding areas when camping or hiking but I don't think I would have the patience for editing and such?
I love the perspective they provide and enjoy what other take the time to do but I'll be out ridding..

I love the editing. Do it at night. Usually drinking a couple beers. It's a hobby. But definitely not for everyone.

Taking the shots is a balance. I try not to drive my kids nuts taking shots. So only get about 5% of the available shots, not wanting to bother the riding too much. It's always easier to film a place that you have been to before. You can time the breaks. Some day I'll do some trips that are just for filming.

Skydio is a little better for this. You basically throw it up and it will follow you for 20 mins (per battery). You don't have to start and stop, and stage scenes. Just let it record. Of course, then you have to watch all that footage to pick out the good nuggets.

And third item learned..... the thread just keeps on giving. FPV. First thought on the bowling clip was it could not be real or that it had heavy CGI edits.

Funny digging into this segment, the "official" FAA regs are that you need a "visual observer" if the operator has the goggles on. Skydio drone gets hijacked could be a headline one day I guess. I remember seeing a DJI story about getting on the US blacklist for some specific piece of technology/hardware someone didn't want them to have.

tough critic. Yes , I need to see Rope again. Not seen the other , yes that clip is impressive too, looks like it is a well received movie. Way before my time but curious if the border was really so free at that time. Best modern day long shot is from Goodfellas - the saturday nightclub entrance.

A video today that you think can't possibly be real and must have had computer help but is real, THAT is worthy of praise.
