Laguna San Ignacio Whale Updates

Was wondering if any nomads have been to the Laguna San Ignacio this week for whalewatching and what the numbers are like. I'll be in Mulege next week and was thinking of taking my daughter for her first whale trip.

My last trip was in 2000 with my students from Mulege's high school but being 5 months pregnant at that time, the doctor from Santa Rosalia during a check-up pre-trip shook his head and said "mucho brinco en el camino y la panga"...he didn't like the bumpy road or the bumpy panga ride (even told me to put a pillow under my growing self for the ride out to the lagoon..not bad advice even if not with child as they say...) so I watched from the shoreline as my students waved good-bye in the pangas. I'd been the year before, my first trip, with another group of students so I tried to keep in mind that at least I'd been before and seeing their thrilled faces and listening to their winded by excitement stories upon returning to the Kuyima camp made missing out OK.

So, I'd love the give my daughter that same experience and any updates would be appreciated. Here in La Jolla, there was a mother and calf spotted just past the surfline at La Jolla Shores and the local news helicopter had great footage of them sauntering along their northern route. Got me thinking about a little road trip to San Igancio... :tumble:

I was in Laguna ojo de liebre or Scammons lagoon last week on Saturday and there were an estimated 500 whales in the lagoon still. We got very lucky I guess because they came right up to the boat for us to touch them. It was an amazing experience. I would post pics from my computer but I dont know how. I see the picture icon above but dont know how to load them from there, any suggestions?

At some point, the salt company closes the road to visitors and the pangeros close up shop. I don't know when that is, exactly, but you should check to be sure at this point in the "season."

I believe the whale watching tours end on April 15th. Still time, but the end is getting close. Can't wait til next season!

As of March 30, they were still trying to run tours but the wind was a big problem, normally cancelling the boats by 1300.

Just came back from Laguna San Ignacio, my first visit. It was, well, great. We had two "friendly" whales, one that kept lifting the boat. It wasn't until mama came around that he left.

Thanks for the updates everyone. We'll call Kuyima when we get down to Mulege next week and see if any trips out are still available. :tumble:

or bajaeco tours at campo cortez you can see whales easily thru end of april.

Thanks for the update and I hope that all is well with you. Don't know if you will be in Mulege this month but I will be there from April 7-17 and it would be great to finally meet you in person after all the kind favors you have done for me. Sara's cousins still talk about Capt. Mike delivering their Christmas presents from SD a few years back.

Sorry to hear that you are "grounded" so to speak and recovering. Hope that all goes well and it sounds like I may miss you on this trip but I'll ask for you at the Serenidad when I stop by...Alex can always let me know if you've arrived or not.

I went to Scammons on Thursday March 31st with some friends and no whales were in the lagoon. I arrived around 11am and 2 boats came back in full of tourists from an 4 hour trip while neither boat seeing a whale. Oh well, it was cool to see the salt mining up close.

Last year I went to san Ignacio and it was one of the best experiences of my life.
