Looking at the new atlas, I noticed Punta el Mangle/Ensenada el Mangle between Loreto and Ensenada San Basilio. With San Basilio too crowded and many
beaches near Ligui now fenced off, I am looking for alternatives. I did a search on Nomad and found a couple posts about an old, now dilapidated
development there.
My two questions: what is the drive from Hwy 1 like? The road, especially just after the Hwy 1 turn off, is not extremely clear on Google Earth. It
looks like it may be very sandy.
We have a Subaru Forester which can handle some difficulties, but not extreme (the road to San Basilio--no problem, or the road between La Soledad and
San Evaristo--our limit).
Second: is the area a good place to camp? ...by that I mean good places to pitch a tent, not too many people, access to the beach, paying a
caretaker okay, if necessary...
I suspect that if this is a good, but still relatively unknown place, those in the know will hesitate to advertise the site on this website. I
respect that. Just asking.

A road goes north from the San Bruno mission site that appears to connect with the road on the Atlas. We drove a mile or so on it in 2019 before going
back to the 1683 fort site.

It was a great pleasure for me to help with it. Thank you for the kind words!

until recently the gate to the development was locked. It is open now. That means few people. Mangroves are salt water plants. Mosquitos need sweet
water. So, no mosquitos to be expected.
The best road in starts right at the military camp.
Just ask, they'll show you.
But you still have to cross the sandy Arroyo.

We took the road at the checkpoint which headed straight to the coast. After talking to a fisherman there, we backtracked to a road going north,
through a closed gate.
The faster way we found was to go west from the highway bridge in the sandy Arroyo, past gravel mine diggings... to get to the historic hilltop ruins.

I have been in La Paz 20 years.
Bugs are almost non existent now.
Up until about 5 years ago there were waves of seasonal bugs.
No mas.
Number of birds in the garden is also dramatically down.
No idea what the cause.
Could be the heavy government spraying (air and ground) to kill mosquitos.
Could be the super agro farms killing everything that threatens their crops.
I simply don't know.

as mentioned you can cross over from the military base to get the main San Bruno fish camp, good camping there
for a more adventurous and remote route, continue north past the military checkpoint, go under the bridge where it crosses the arroyo, follow it back
a way and head north across the arroyo, climbs up and over a few hills and eventually spits you out at El mangle/the old ruins of the canadian/child
trafficking/organ harvesting site, depending on who tells you the story
you can see the route from google satellite, there are a few sections that are a bit gnarly but with some rock stacking and good driving you could
make it in the Forester, I get back there with my Ranger in 2wd without needing to lock the hubs
a few of my fishing buddies head back there from time to time to fish the rocks, and some commercial panga guys use it a layup occasionally, ive
never seen another soul while being out there, its kind of a creepy place but good for camping/fishing/etc
