San Quintin or Camalu in late July

smithfamilybajabound - 7-13-2021 at 11:39 AM

San Quintin or Camalu, Baja Area I would like to take my family and stay in hotel or rental house in this area. I would like to relax, fish and take my quads and ride on the beach. Someone said on another forum site, "Leave the ATV's at home. You will be a target of police for some BS so they can take them. You have them, the cops want them so you will lose them."
Any acommodation suggestions, or other advice because I have not been down there in years but like you input from people who know the area and what they thinK of bring quads to cruise around. Thanks Mike

The police are not your problem.
Make sure the quads are chained up well, next to where you sleep. That part of Baja is not the most stellar for safe camping... That would require you to get away from the farming towns and use a 4WD to reach an isolated, safe area to enjoy your quads and fishing.
However, since you need a hotel or rental and near a big sand beach, the Hotel Misión Santa María, San Quintín, would be a top option. It is on one of the biggest sand beaches in Baja... and everyone in all sorts of cars and buses drive on it during the lowest lunar tides (clam digging).

Another option is the more rustic Motel Cielito Lindo, just next door/ past the Hotel Misión Santa María.

Further north, at Colonia Vicente Guerrero, is Posada Don Diego camping and rooms for rent (check availability). It is a few miles from the beach but the road goes right there.

Most other places are on rocky shorelines and cater to the surfers, so not so much a quad location except for endless dirt road trips, away from the coast.

A couple maps to help orient to the region:

Some photos when I stayed there one night on the Trail of Missions TV show Tour:

It was a foggy morning when we left early, but you can see it is a big beach.

We drove south a couple of miles, than back to the the highway at El Pabellon.

Here is the full TV show

For what you described I would definitely take DK advise and stay at Hotel Mision Santa Maria. Good beach fishing and riding.

I take my SXS to Baja all the time. Never had a problem. Keep the toys locked up and the trailer chained thru the wheels too.

Let me add, for a special dining treat, go one night (not Monday, closed) to 'Jardines Baja' (Baja Gardens), at Km. 1.5, then west and south on dirt.

Exceptional food.

exceptional? we disagree. jardines has some ambiance, and makes decent baja-style mex food, but it is not exceptional. the seafood and meat are pretty good, but not exceptional.
san q is big enough town that I suspect there are some creative restaurants in the area doing new/exceptional things,... I don't know myself as I don't stop much in san q, usually just passing thru and sticking to my roadtrip standards mision santa isabel, parcela 12, and a taco stand whose name I forget.
maybe some san q locals can chime in and tell us what restaurants are being creative and perhaps exceptional (I need a new roadside stop)

Mission Santa Maria is an excellent place to stay especially with the beach near by. For a really good dinner either Jardines or Cielito Lindo.
Cielito Lindo has an excellent Veracruz style fish dinner and the margaritas are to die for. San Antonio del Mar on the beach west of Colonet has sand dunes that are fun for an ATV or SxS.

I agree with Mission Santa Maria. Very secure and right on the beach. We've stayed there a number of times with many off road racers and all their gear. the restaurant is decent but definitely has great margaritas.

As for food, there are a lot of great restaurants now. It's amazing how many have popped up. We recently ate at Jardines....it was good but I'm going to try some of the newer options in town. If you like cerveza artisinal, definitely check out Wiwis...besides a great beer selection, they have three great restaurants inside..we like the pizza!

Yep ... mission. also make a trip a couple miles over to the old mill for diner. Like a museum for the area and great food. Go into town for some awesome street tacos (go late afternoon with daylight and go to the one with the largest crowd) keep an eye on your stuff in town. Town and the beach hotel areas are like 2 different worlds.
