A question about logging in and out....

AKgringo - 8-3-2021 at 01:18 PM

When I wander away from my computer, I sometimes forget that it is running, and I am logged in to this forum. If I don't come back for a couple of hours, are there any negative effects for the server or other users? :?:

Nope, but it gives me a chance to catch up on your e-mails and Amazon orders ...;)

Do you think this is where all those lonely women who want to hook up with me saw my profile?

:lol::lol: That could be.... those algorithms catch up with a guy after a while. Maybe a nice lady saw your post about only appearing to be a homeless guy and passed the word on you were a diamond in the rough....

I don't see how being logged in but absent from keyboard would pose a problem.... but apparently living in the basement for past 18 months has significantly reduced my intellect and I have no clue about how things work.

I don't think so. Being logged in means that a tiny amount of session data is stored on the server and in a cookie in your browser. It doesn't do anything with it until it receives a page request, and I haven't observed that the forum pages auto-refresh.

I'm pretty sure they don't auto-refresh. I have to manually refresh to get the latest misinformation.

Well, I dunno, AI software is finally moving forward at a rapid pace. An unattended computer with behavioral bugs logged into bajanomad could troll the message board with un-referenced statements of fact and political opinions stated as fact. I've been seeing a lot of that lately.

AK make sure you log out. Maybe the trolling will end.

That sets a cookie that expires when you close the browser - and therefore if you forgot to logout before leaving, it logs you out. So, if you're logging-in from a computer where there's public access (library, hotel, etc), someone following you on that machine won't be logged in to this site and able to use your account.

Otherwise the cookie will keep you logged in for about 90 days or so unless you manually use the logout link.

fyi

The cookie/logout situation is about sharing the same computer/device.

Sharing the same wifi/hotspot/network is a different issue. With this, one's at risk of someone (with knowledge of how) snooping/sniffing the network to see activity across the network/internet... perhaps accessing a username/password being used or sent insecurely, and/or even possibly accessing one's system/device with mal intent.

Anyone that wants to put a "firewall" between their device/computer/etc and anyone else on a public wifi/network, I suggest use of a pocket travel repeater/router/hotspot. Both of the following are USB-powered and available on amazon.com (I have one of each):

Mango:
https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-mt300n-v2/
- Just know this one works on 802.11 b/g/n wifi hotspots, but not 802.11a ones - which are still commonly in use too.

Slate:
https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-ar750s/

Both of the above also have OpenVPN installed - so can also be used internationally with VPN servers to access entertainment/media sources from one's home country (or in one's own home to watch sports events blacked-out in the local market), etc.
