Murdock's Baja Race Maps

David K - 8-9-2021 at 09:27 AM

I hear from Curtis Murdock that there will be additions and updates to this list. For now, here is the collection going back to the 1960s:

I am sure he has a huge back log of mapping to get caught on. His maps put other armature map makers to shame at least for Baja.

Yes, he apologized on Race Dezert for the long period he was off line. Problem was with with his provider.

His maps only work for Garmin and Lowrance so far.

If one does not want to buy his maps he has the best collection of free race maps and race gps tracks for mx & us races.

Gaia and Back Country Navigator support both GPX and KMZ files. So, they will work perfectly with these maps.

Both are much better than standalone GPS products that have gone the way off the dinosaur except for marine use where they are combined with radar and sonar functionality.

but he is not selling gpx or kmz files

What's the difference between the free ones and the ones he's selling on SD Cards?

He has hundred of free ones available in KMZ and GPX.

I will try to explain what Murdock is doing.
Murdock sells GPS maps not GPX or USR tracks. He does not sell SD cards.

He offers limited free images of the race promoters published maps and he offers limited free GPX or USR tracks the race promoter published for a specific race. More would be shown but over the years much of the promoter stuff has been lost.
The race maps and race tracks are downloads to your PC. Race maps are the usual pictures and tracks are GPX or USR. They come to your PC for you to use as required.

The maps for Garmin and Lowrance are downloads to your PC that one has to install into your GPS. For Lowrance your SD card is used, for Garmin it is done directly using Garmin application with no SD card - drag and drop.
Map back country roads are the result of tracks obtained from the community of race enthusiasts and off roaders like many of you. All are real and not copied from sources like Google or other map makers. The maps include roads from public records from the Mexican government and show the internal roads of towns and subdivions throughout Baja. The roads that will show up on your GPS have enough detail that if you follow them you will not drive off a cliff or miss a turn on a tight track.
The maps are not interactive like you find in your car to do point to point navigation.

What he does is convert the tracks sent to him in the format a person sends to him into the proprietary format that Garmin or Lowrance use for maps and he merges them all together for the final map. And of course the public filing maps are also converted to his map format.
Kilometer waypoints are included for the highways and are the result of him driving the roads.
The latest map from Murdock is 11/2016 and now he is back on line he will offer more updated maps.

After a long delay with major issues with his server.

Today Murdock said:
I've done a ton of work on the site and added a bunch of new stuff (more maps, results, info...). Let me know if there are any problems and I will work hard to get them fixed.

Great news... I sent him the 1979 Baja 1000 map from the program I have.

What PaulW said. I have purchased Baja maps from Murdock Nav. The races he has listed are merely the tracks which can be downloaded for free.
