Gas prices along Mex 5 ?

AKgringo - 10-1-2021 at 04:36 PM

I was thinking of doing a quick trip down the Cortez side, probably not past Loreto, and I was wondering if the prices are as bad as they are north of the border?

Bajazly - 10-1-2021 at 07:25 PM

Regular in SF is 20.5 give or take

Thanks! If my math is right, that is about $3.78/gallon.

PaulW - 10-2-2021 at 07:22 AM

Correct
Formula is $/gal =(P/l)x(3.7854/(P/$))

Ex rate at the station just out of town the other day was 19.85.

David K - 10-2-2021 at 12:10 PM

The price per liter is about the same as the pesos per dollar, so a dollar a liter. 3.785 liters (and dollars) per gallon! +/-.

One more question....

AKgringo - 10-2-2021 at 01:27 PM

Since brands other than Pemex have been on the scene for a while now, has there been much of a spread in price between stations in towns large enough to have multiple options?

Mexico needs a website like gasbuddy to list/map all stations and their prices and honesty….

The quantitative honesty must be factored with listed pump price to determine true cost of fuel

Bob and Susan - 10-2-2021 at 01:57 PM

you are talking about the 5 hwy

i recently did not see a gas station open south of san felipe

so the gas stations are all in mexicali and san felipe

then you hit the one and south to jesus villa maria

I agree! I started my search for gas info on line, and what I found was either outdated, or a lead to anything but what I was looking for.

I suppose that even a site like Gas buddy wouldn't be able to tell us how many liters per liter shown on the pump we actually got!

David K - 10-2-2021 at 03:10 PM

There are Pemex stations in Puertecitos and Gonzaga. Puertecitos has not been open regularly. It is down in town at the end of the branch road off Hwy. 5.

I wonder if this is a measurement unique to Mexico.

I buy gas during the winter at a station famous for "litros chiquitos".

David K - 10-2-2021 at 05:20 PM

The Gonzaga Bay Pemex is along the highway, at the turnoff to go to Alfonsina's, can't be missed!

I am more of an explorer than a tourist. If I make it as far as Loreto on this trip, it will be a short stay!

I have purchased gasoline in Puertecitos before. The last time I was there, the station was closed, but one of the locals near the station made a call, and someone came down and opened up for me!

The same thing occurred at the Gonzaga station last year. I guess the attendant doesn't have anybody to fill in for him at break times.

I like the pics of the gas station changing colors. Last time I think it was a Arco with a half built awning. Got to love travel in Baja

Good eye! The second photo was in July 2015 and the first in Jan 2017.

RFClark - 10-3-2021 at 11:42 AM

We just returned from Todos Santos and Scorpion Bay.

Hwy5 & 1 are good all the way to Todos Santos. There is road reserfaceing south of the LA Bay turnoff. Gas is 20-22 Peso/L. The pemex at Puertocios is usually closed. The restaurant south of the 5/1 junction is so popular that they run out of water for the restrooms in the afternoons some days.

In general Mexican gas produces about 15% lower milage regardless of who you buy it from.

With the exception of the check point at Gonzaga Bay all the checkpoints are operational and checking NB americans diligently! They checked my maglite and looked at the batteries!

The road from the south to Scorpion Bay is good except from KM 60-KM 74 and about the last 2KM before the 1st turnoff. The road from the 1st turnoff is good.

There is no major road damage from the recent hurricanes as far south as Cerritos Beach,

hmmm that interesting, some here have claimed a a bit better MPG with our non ethanol gas? where did you get that 15% number?

RFClark - 10-3-2021 at 03:15 PM

Our Hyundai has an mpg function. I compared US vs Mexican results for similar diving speeds. I noticed the same thing with my Nissan Rogue on prior trips. Other people I know have noticed similar results in BSC.

David K - 10-3-2021 at 03:39 PM

I keep records of my Tacoma mileage on trips.
Compared to California gasoline, Pemex is indeed better on our motors and gives us better mileage.

The reason is pretty simple: California gasoline is only 90% gasoline and Pemex is 100% gasoline. Mexicans know that corn is for making tortillas not diluting gasoline!

RFClark - 10-3-2021 at 04:10 PM

David,

It might be the BCS gas. We didn't buy gas until the 28th parallel. That said there was a noticeable decrees in milage while in Mexico.

AKgringo - 10-3-2021 at 04:42 PM

My Isuzu Trooper gets pretty poor mileage overall, but it seems to do as well, or better on Mexico gasoline. The Kia Sportage I sometimes drove down Baja is fussy about what is in the tank, and it seems to me to do better S.O.B.!

There is always the possibility of getting bad gasoline from a contaminated tank along the way. It has happened to me a couple of times.

Very possible.

Udo - 10-4-2021 at 10:27 AM

The prices per liter in the Ensenada area have dropped a little. Some stations are priced at $19.20 Pesos per liter.
The COSTCO in Ensenada is now selling gas. However, us locals have been disappointed in the pricing. It is only ½ Peso less than the other stations. And you have to pump it yourself.
On top of that, you have to enter your membership card and a credit/debit card, or some cash into the pump. If you don't pump in what you need, you have to apply for the refund.=, which may take 3-5 days...if at all.

RFClark - 10-4-2021 at 10:29 AM

Gas is just under 18 pesos in Mexicali!

Udo - 10-4-2021 at 10:30 AM

My Toyota FJ is generally filled with Mexican gas. But at times I have to drive to the USA for a doctor's appointment of for some meds. When I fill with US gas, my check engine light comes on after a few miles of US gas.
Then after two tanks of Mexican gas, my check engine light just goes off.

LOL, your FJ likes pure gasoline over that ethanol dilution! :light::lol:

BajaMama - 10-4-2021 at 12:36 PM

I do like the higher octane in the premium in BCS - always fill up in GN when heading north.

AKgringo - 10-4-2021 at 12:47 PM

I enter Mexico with an empty gas can (as legally required) but always return to the US with a full can. My small engines do better without the ethanol and other additives blend.

The CA stuff is hard on fuel lines, diaphragms and seals in small carbureted engines.

Don Pisto - 10-4-2021 at 01:26 PM

17.90 in Rosarito. true ethanol no bueno but if you gas up here at a Chevron Techron is mothers milk for your engine;)

Has anyone ever changed their Baja travel plans due to the price of gas? I sure haven't.

It seems a silly issue for sure. If a few centavos per liter is going to make or break your budget, just stay home, or rethink your trip. When you need gas, you need gas, no matter the price. It's part of being on vacation to just not worry about a few piddling centavos here and there. JMHO.

Or, maybe start a GoFundMe page to solicit gas money?

I asked about the prices because for my style of Baja travel, gasoline is my biggest expense. I would not 'cancel' a trip because of high fuel prices, but would modify my plan to minimize the cost.

For this trip, I am considering leaving the Trooper home and driving my Sportage soft top back SOB for another round! The Trooper has proved to be and excellent adventure rig for me, but the Sportage is also a lot of fun and gets almost twice the miles per gallon.

I have also decided to spend more time in the north, checking out places I have always blown through on the way to BCS.

I am in Northern CA right now, so I have a considerable amount of fuel consumption just getting to and from the border.

I'd be happy to kick in $20 toward your gas expenses. As a well known parasite of taxpayer money, I might as well share the bounty!
