What do you consider 'Central Baja California'? A poll for fun:

David K - 10-4-2021 at 01:36 PM

Here are 4 possibilities for the northern point of 'Central Baja'. With such a wide 'empty' area south of the Loreto area, it seemed logical to make the area around Loreto (Ligüí) the southern point.

We can do a second poll asking for different southern points once we get a consensus on the northern point!

To help you visualize Baja, a map:

Very good... but too soon...

From above: "We can do a second poll asking for different southern points once we get a consensus on the northern point!"

From an east coast perspective, San Luis Gonzaga for the northern limit.

Maybe El Rosario/ Gonzaga Bay for the northern to central Baja transition, then?

Bajazly - 10-4-2021 at 06:46 PM

Cataviña Gonzaga is a good line.

When driving south I feel I'm in "Baja" when I'm south of San Felipe to the east and El Rosario to the west.

To me it's either Baja California or Baja California Sur. I think the maps will back me up.:D

Yes, but since that silly article about 'artsy' towns in central Baja, I thought it would be fun to see what Nomads consider 'central Baja'.

I put a straight edge on the Benchmark Baja map, from Tecate to Los Cabos, and Vizcaino is almost exactly at the mid point!

So if Vizcaino is the center of Baja, how big is the circle around it going to be that defines "central" Baja?

Well, the peninsula is close to 800 miles long... if we do it evenly, the north could be down 200 miles from the border and the south could be 200 miles up from the tip. The center would be 200 miles out (north and south) from Vizcaino.

Split evenly, Chapala to the south end of Bahia Concepcion.

Yep, Baja split into 1/3s.
I just think Central Baja deserves more area, LOL!

Boojum trees were my sign I was away from civilization, beyond the power grid and phone lines, going south... the "real Baja" LOL. So, they are seen just south of El Rosario and south of Gonzaga Bay. I also think of Loreto, San Javier, and Comondú as being north of the "southern part" of Baja (Mag Bay, La Paz, and Los Cabos).

As I mentioned to Bajaboy, another poll is needed for the southern line.

I consider vizcaino biosphere reserve area the central area.

State border seems like a good “center” point too.

Geographic provinces may be a better conceptual framework for discussion…

Maybe another way to view it is; anything more than a hard day's drive south of the border, or north of Los Cabos is "Central Baja"?

Wouldn't that add up to 600 miles?

David K - 10-5-2021 at 04:10 PM

200 miles out from Vizcaino north and south is 400 miles. Radius x 2 = total width. 400 center + 200 north + 200 south = 800.

Agree! But, Ciudad Constitución and that Magdalena Plain don't excite me too much! To the east, Mission San Luis Gonzaga, La Pasión, and Dolores on to San Evaristo is cool, however.

Darn Common Core math DK....Guess I need to brush up a bit:lol:

Ensenada and la paz sure seem like baja to me. Mexicali and TJ too.

Your defining “baja” as just the sparsely populated areas is the myopic view of windshield tourists that are narrowly focused on desert wasteland defining their baja vacation.

Central is the key word, goat.
