Hey map boy... (The king of all maps)

Howard - 12-10-2021 at 07:00 PM

Please provide some maps for us.

Thinking about trailering the RZR's from Loreto up to Mikes Buenaventura and dropping off the trailers and cars there and continue with the RZR's north of there up and over to of San José de Comondú for the night. Then continue to Scorpion Bay for a couple of nights then back to Comondú for one night. Maybe take the route that lets you off just south of San Javier Mission and then into Loreto. Will go back later to pick up the cars and trailers.

Maps please, gracias.

Anyone, anyone?

About 15 years ago I use to call him Sun Boy regularly.

This was before the maps.

He has grown on me over the years.

His maps are a thing of legends! I've printed many of them and used while in Baja!!! Thanks maps guy, LOL...

David K - 12-10-2021 at 09:33 PM

I have a name, I am a grandfather of 6, and I help anyone if I can.

My maps are all here in the Nomad Road Conditions forum.
I recommend the new Benchmark Atlas for more complete maps.

My maps were designed to be used with the road guide I wrote for Baja Bound. They have not published it yet, thanks in part to Covid travel restrictions.

paranewbi - 12-11-2021 at 05:06 AM

Completely accommodating, compassionate man. I have had the joy of shaking the hand of David K and to have personally gleaned the wisdom of his Baja experience.
Worthy of a posting of support.

Skipjack Joe - 12-11-2021 at 07:21 AM

I think his feelings were hurt.

Perhaps instead of Hey Map Boy you should've said Hail Map Boy.

100X - 12-11-2021 at 08:01 AM

Not sure where Buenaventura is. However, see recent thread started by Perrro Viejo "El Rosarito to La Purisima." David, as he always does, graciously posted a map there that may be helpful to you as well.

I think Buenaventura is in Bahia Concepcion!

I thought it was cute to call you map boy, David! All in good fun, you are the map genius, bar none!

Howard - 12-11-2021 at 08:20 AM

Absolutely no bad feelings meant towards David. Actually it was meant more of a compliment as he is the map king (OK, does that sound better?) of Baja!

I was referring to Mikes Buena Ventura around KM 93 towards the bottom of Bahia Concepcion. I read in older posts about a nice off road drive up and over the hill from below Mulege to San José de Comondú.

If someone can suggest a place to safely keep the cars and trailers closer to the turn off that would be great.

Gracias

100X - 12-11-2021 at 08:23 AM

Might be easier to just drive the SXS's up the highway.

Howard - 12-11-2021 at 08:30 AM

There are some people in the group that would not be that comfortable for being on the highway for that length of time and distance.
Really doesn't sound like that much fun for me either if we have a trailering option.

AKgringo - 12-11-2021 at 08:32 AM

Nobody who follows this forum had to ask "Who's that?". If David ever wants another vehicle to travel along on one of his mapping trips, I'm in!

David K - 12-11-2021 at 09:16 AM

Thanks amigos!
It sure would be nice if we were all in Baja having fun together...
There was a time... and you can see those times we have four-wheeled and camped together, mostly 2001-2011 (yikes that's 10-20 years ago). Many times we traveled with one other vehicle/ Nomad, such as with Roy 'The Squarecircle' or BajaRob & Connie, or Steve 'Baja Tripper'. When multiple Nomads got together it was even more fun. On VivaBaja.com you can see photos from those trips:

The road south of Bahía Concepción goes to San Isidro & La Purísima and the side road south to the twin towns of Comondú (San José and San Miguel).

My drives over these roads and photos are detailed in my 2017 Trip #2 report on Nomad. Since Photobucket has splashed their watermark on the pictures and eliminated the pre-sizing to fit on Nomad a few months ago, see the trip report on Tacoma World forums, where the photos are still the way I had them:

Playa Buenaventura is at Km. 93 and has the cantina operated by Mark, Olivia, and Nathan. Excellent Baja 'waterhole' with great seafood and cheeseburgers!

Buenaventura with Mark & Olivia was featured in the 2019 Trail of Missions Recon Episode 5 (Minute 2:45 to 4:35):

If you watch the video clip: Yes, that's me sitting next to Curt LeDuc in Cameron's Raptor (Minute 5:06+) and talking about why Baja is the 'best' at Minute 8:12 to 8:25.

Howard, are you going to start your trip at k59 or k136?

David, the last time I was on the road from La Purísima to Mex 1 was many years back. Brad Farrow (another volunteer at our La Paz clinic) and I had visited and fit a prosthesis to an elderly woman there and decided to take that route back. Here we are, miles and miles from nowhere, Brad driving his BIG Chevy Suburban, when he started cussing and immediately pulls over (as far as he can on that little dirt road!). Just then this off-road vehicle passes us at about 90 MPH! We didn’t know that they were prerunning the Baja Mil. Lucky that Brad saw the dust cloud in his rear view and was able to move over and out of the way!

Probably at K59 as K136 is to far north to enter from Loreto. Maybe I'll take a ride in the car to explore what if anything is around the K59 area to see if there is a place to safely leave the cars and trailers. I suppose worse case scenario we will just drive the SXS's from Loreto to the K59 turn off.

It's a great dilemma to have!

David K - 12-12-2021 at 09:22 AM

The restaurant at Rosarito (Km. 62) or a ranch west of the highway on the road to La Purísima, perhaps are places to leave them during your trip?

Howard - 12-12-2021 at 09:49 AM

I'll take a ride up this week and report back.

Started in Loreto and trailered the SXSx to the San Basilio turn off and 1.6 miles in there is a gate that they opened for us and graciously let us keep the vehicles there where it was very safe.

Drove up the highway to KM59 in our 3 SXS's did the turn off for San Ysidro, made it to La Parisima for the night and a home cooked farm dinner. She made up some fresh squeezed Guava juice and the devil made me pour some Vodka over ice and I was a very happy camper. Took off for San Juanico for 2 nights, retraced our steps to La Parisima for one night then to the vehicles and then trailered back to Loreto.

On 1 1-10 scale this was a 10+, everything went well with absolutely no hiccups.

Beautiful country and people and we ate very well with no break downs. 87 octane available in La Parisima and San Juanico.

I highly recommend that route if you have an off road RZR or comparable. It would of been very rough in a 4 wheel vehicle. Just under 200 miles on the SXS including maybe a 20 miles ride down the beach. Unfortunately saw around 12 dead turtles washed up on shore.

David K - 2-16-2022 at 08:33 AM

La Purísima ;)
