Baja Cat is hospitalized

Ken Cooke - 1-3-2022 at 10:08 AM

This morning while reading Facebook, a follow-up to Jose 'Baja Cat' announcement that he contracted C-19 from 3 days prior announced that he is currently hospitalized (likely in Tijuana where he resides) and in a very delicate condition.
His friend posted that he has been hospitalized, is sedated and is currently intubated. Updates on his condition will be posted periodically, but I am concerned about his cigar smoking as that raises his risks tremendously.

Let's hope that Baja Cat pulls through.:!:

Thanks Ken

Keep us informed as you are able. Best wishes to Jose for a complete recovery.

I don't know his status. I hope that he pulls through.

Is Baja Cat Graham, with the teddy bear pics?

BajaBlanca - 1-4-2022 at 08:07 AM

No

I think that is Graham Mackintosh you are referring to. The Baja adventurer and author.

Correct, 'BAJACAT' (Nomad name) is Jose Ruíz on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100024334920128

'Graham' (Nomad name) is Graham Mackintosh on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/graham.mackintosh.71

Jose's friend Dahlia Black clarified to me via Facebook that Jose, "Is not an actual smoker. He just lights up a cigar 2-3x/year, but he does not know how to smoke them.".
I explained that I would post this in order that we are all aware of his possible risk factors.:!:

No further updates to provide yet. I will be in contact with his friend Black Dahlia as she has been posting updates.

Thank you for the updates Ken.

You're welcome - and, I have no additional updates to provide for the end of this week. Hopefully, next week there will be updates provided on Jose's condition.

Message from Jose's friend

Ken Cooke - 1-12-2022 at 11:43 AM

Update from Monday 1/10/22

After bring intubated several days Jose came down with a pneumonia commonly associated with the ventilation.

This combined with Covid created an additional setback for our friend Jose and his state overall.

The extubation has left Jose unable to speak at the moment, and his medical team is waiting to see the effects of the medication taken against this aggressive pneumonia.

The good news is that his vital signs are stable, without fever and his labs show a good response over this complication of pneumonia.

Please maintain your prayers for Jose's recuperation - and know this recuperation will take time. These days have been very difficult and stressful.

You got this Baja Cat!

José is out of the hospital.

David K - 1-29-2022 at 10:43 AM

From his Facebook page, posted by Dahlia, translated:

Jan. 21:
Jose sends them greetings. I've mentioned everyone who's left him messages of support, he made a surprise face when I mentioned some names, I saw his moving expression of being appreciated. He's making great progress. He already started lung rehabilitation and is already walking with support. No longer required supplementary oxygen. Lost a few pounds, needs to gold his meat in the sun but his face is still just as handsome and chesty.

Jan. 22:
Jose was discharged today. He's already home.

Hopefully he'll shortly be out "golding his meat in the sun". :saint:

Google translate, I assume? ;)

Yes, it was too funny to try and correct it!

KurtG - 1-31-2022 at 11:03 AM

Glad to hear he is recovering, I met Jose some years back at Playa Coyote. Good guy.

Ken Cooke - 2-18-2022 at 06:42 PM

José has posted that he has exited the hospital, still on the road to recuperation. Down four pant sizes and nearly 60 pounds. Jose is now homebound, returning to the hospital for appointments and therapy appointments.
