Unbelievable new Barbera/Zin blend

Santiago - 4-1-2022 at 03:18 PM

We just received a new 50/50 blend of Barbera and Zinfandel from Santo Tomas they are calling Barfandel. Incredible punch from the Zin with a smooth finish from the Barbera. No vintage. Only available at the winery as far as we know so if you are driving by, stop in and get some, ask by name as they do not have it out on the shelf.

I suspect the vintage of the wine isn't as important as the vintage of this post.

Anyway, the moderately priced "finds" I have discovered down here in the last two years include:

Sierra Blanca Sauv Blanc-more of a Bordeaux style sauv blanc. Far from a Kiwi style. Almost seems like it may be a blend of SB and semillion or maybe chenin blanc or viognier or something. An LA Cetto product. 185 pesos.

Enate Tinto (tempranillo) 2019. From Spain. a little over 200 pesos, as I recall.

Alta Mora Rose-a rose of syrah. Believe it is from Chile. around 180 pesos.

LA Cetto Reserva Privada Chardonnay-Mexico, of course. We are getting this for 220 pesos. Far superior to the plain jane version of LA Cetto chard.

I'm certain baja has produced a few good wines. I just have a difficult time developing enthusiasm. That said, the food science of viticulture is nothing more than processes applied to materials. The is no reason it can't happen here. Right grapes...right process...badda-bing

Thanks for those tips, we are doing a weekend in May this year and will stop in to LA Cetto and check those out.

Now that is funny! Santiago, was your post actually serious?

There's a great family winery in Apple Hill (just east of Placerville on Hiway 50) that always posts a funny April 1st joke, this was last years.

I don't see I ever mentioned this but last May SWMBO and I took a quick side trip from Guadalupe to Santo Tomas, we really like their grounds for a quiet picnic, kinda hard to do in the valle these days. Anyway, when we were in the tasting room chatting with the young people pouring (they're all young nowadays it seems) I pulled up my post and showed them; they burst out laughing. Apparently, someone in a wine tour van a few weeks prior had showed them the post and asked for it. Too much.
