Relax, we are not losing another Nomad, I am talking about the Isuzu I impulsively bought a couple of years ago. I have been the last owner of quite
a few vehicles over the years when a needed major repair would exceed the value of the vehicle, but this one is different!
The transmission in my 1999 Trooper is going out, but the rest of the truck is in great condition, and it has been a surprisingly good Baja ride so I
would be willing to put a few thousand into keeping it alive.
The problem is that the GM designed transmission was sold to Isuzu years ago, and neither corporation has continued making repair parts! I have not
been able to find a shop that will take on the repair, or any online rebuilders that have one in stock.
I don't suppose anyone reading this knows where I can get a certifiably good tranny for my Trooper, but it won't hurt to ask. I think years 98
through 2002 would work, as long as it is 4x4 auto.

Thank you for that link Harald! I have found other sites that I could get the basic seals, gaskets bands and such, but not torque converters, pumps
and valve bodies if any of those parts needed changing.
None of the regular transmission repair shops was willing to take on the work, but I did find one mechanic that said he would if we could find a
supplier.
I will give him the contact info and let him talk to the supplier. That kind of auto repair is way beyond my paygrade!
I have owned a lot of 4x4s over the years, and for a stock rig, this has been one of my favorites. It is a great, capable, and comfortable ride! It
only has 132k miles and I did a lot of routine maintenance and upgrades already.bajatrailrider - 6-4-2022 at 08:28 PM
Could you find wrecked one with manual trans convert it? I have buddy with old Trooper W manual trans. He lives at El coyote he loves it . If engine
shot maybe part out.AKgringo - 6-4-2022 at 09:13 PM
Converting to a manual trans is more of a project than I am willing to consider. Besides that, city, or back road driving with a stick is starting to
bother my left hip with all of the clutch work. John Harper - 6-5-2022 at 05:13 AM
That's gotta be tough to find parts for manufacturers no longer selling in the USA. Mitsubishi comes to mind as well.
Johnbajatrailrider - 6-5-2022 at 08:58 AM
Well maybe retire the old gal till you find . Used trans that can be rebuilt W standard rebuild kit. pacificobob - 6-5-2022 at 01:05 PM
I would be wiling to wager there is a forum of trooper enthusiasts who could help you source the required partsAKgringo - 6-5-2022 at 01:35 PM
It is in Grass Valley CA right now. It is still able to move around, but probably not very far. The fluid is fresh, and full, but it is slipping and
does not shift well.
I found another Trooper that is the same year and equipment for not much more than the transmission repair would cost (if I could find someone to do
it) but it ha 140k on the speedometer, and no way to tell if that tranny has ever been rebuilt.bajatrailrider - 6-5-2022 at 06:50 PM
yes shot in dark good used transLancairDriver - 6-6-2022 at 07:38 AM
Google “ japanese motor vehicle salvage parts” it will bring up a bunch of foreign and domestic suppliers, many in CA. Japan used to have a law
basically penalizing automobile owners keeping a car over 40,000 miles. Lots of parts were imported. I knew a group that was importing rotary Mazda
Wankel engines for experimental aircraft installation several years ago.Bob and Susan - 6-6-2022 at 07:42 AM
i ve done this with other "problem makes"...
take the trans out....take it to a rebuilder WITHOUT the car
they will rebuild it if the kit is available like you said
then you reinstall
keep the car away from the rebuild project and it will get donebajatrailrider - 6-6-2022 at 08:55 AM
I would not not do it that way as I have 50 years in auto work. all auto trans rebuilt fail rate . After done very high now you pull trans for free. Bob and Susan - 6-6-2022 at 09:57 AM
if you have a "fail rate" you are at the WRONG shop
the trick is to blow out and clean the lines,,,,then fill with good oil
alot of businesses wont work on old junker cars,,,,touch one part and another breaksbajatrailrider - 6-6-2022 at 01:28 PM

Its not like that at all. My 50 years in auto work teach me not to make costly mistakes. if you
suggest buy old 20 or 30 years old auto trans . Blow it out clean the lines that is the trick . Your giving bad info let the shop find one. They
install no good on them to remove it.TMW - 6-7-2022 at 12:28 PM
Do a google search. I did and came up with several automatics for your Isuzu.TMW - 6-7-2022 at 12:34 PM
actually that's a great deal...except...new torque converter included
and return shipping...
just pick it up at a transfer station......easyJohn Harper - 6-7-2022 at 01:25 PM
That's a good price if it's all rebuilt. My auto trans in my Ranger cost ~$3200 to rebuild about three years ago. No issues at all, but I change
trans fluid regularly,
No, that is for other applications, but not mine. I have found othersupplers that list the version that I need, but so far, when I contact them the
unit is out of stock. I am still waiting for an answer from the site that Harald provided.AKgringo - 6-7-2022 at 01:50 PM

I found a replacement Trooper for $3400, so I will probably start getting it beefed up for future trips. I look forward to pinstriping it as
thoroughly as I did the last one!
The problem with the way this transmission is set up, is there is no dip stick to check the level and condition of the fluid. The only way to check
it is by crawling underneath the truck to drain a bit out, and remove a plug so you can blindly pump fluid back in until it runs out!
To drop the pan requires putting a jack under the output end and removing the cross member. I will definitely do that with the replacement rig before
I head south in it.
