Crossing border northbound with gasoline in cans?

Are there restrictions on taking gas north of the border and if so what are the limits?
I'm heading north in a week or 2 and would like to take some gas with me but don't want to violate any customs laws. Probably have 60 gallons or so.

It cannot be full of gas. They have checked mine a few times. One of the bigger things they look out for. I could sense their disappointment when the cans proved to be empty.

Surprisingly, they never check the 6-gallon Rotopax mounted to the side of my truck. Maybe they don't know it's a gas can?

60 gal could be problem 5 gal is not depends inspector . They say its fire danger. They do look for this as many do it now.

He is asking about northbound, into the U.S. You are describing southbound into Mexico... unless there has been some new change?

My gasoline powered tools do better without the California additive formulas, so I always fill a gas can before I head north. No one has ever asked me about them, and I have never asked if it was OK, but it has not been a problem.

Update. Crossed north bound yesterday about 2 pm and declared the 60 gallons of gas, some 8 oz grapefruit cups from Costco still sealed in their original containers, 2 lifepo4 battery cells, dog food, etc. etc. The gas was ignored but the grapefruit raised his eyebrows. He let me go but said that once a restricted items goes to Mexico they don't want it back. All is well.

Not for sale. I use about 7 gallons a week up here during the summer so I'm hoping it will last through most of the summer until I can get back down south.
Went to the grocery last night after being gone since last October. That was a rude awakening.

I think the limit is about 120 gallons, above which you need some license/permits to transport. Where did you get the 5 gal limit?
In CA, you are required to use CARB-compliant fuel containers.

I dunno if you got it right. Pretty sure it is about 900 lbs limit.
