Crossing border northbound with gasoline in cans?

larryC - 6-14-2022 at 11:38 AM

Are there restrictions on taking gas north of the border and if so what are the limits?
I'm heading north in a week or 2 and would like to take some gas with me but don't want to violate any customs laws. Probably have 60 gallons or so.

It cannot be full of gas. They have checked mine a few times. One of the bigger things they look out for. I could sense their disappointment when the cans proved to be empty.

Surprisingly, they never check the 6-gallon Rotopax mounted to the side of my truck. Maybe they don't know it's a gas can?

60 gal could be problem 5 gal is not depends inspector . They say its fire danger. They do look for this as many do it now.

He is asking about northbound, into the U.S. You are describing southbound into Mexico... unless there has been some new change?

AKgringo - 6-14-2022 at 03:42 PM

My gasoline powered tools do better without the California additive formulas, so I always fill a gas can before I head north. No one has ever asked me about them, and I have never asked if it was OK, but it has not been a problem.

Yes true as I stated 1 5 gal gas can. 60 gal is red flag

My mistake.

larryC - 6-17-2022 at 07:16 AM

Update. Crossed north bound yesterday about 2 pm and declared the 60 gallons of gas, some 8 oz grapefruit cups from Costco still sealed in their original containers, 2 lifepo4 battery cells, dog food, etc. etc. The gas was ignored but the grapefruit raised his eyebrows. He let me go but said that once a restricted items goes to Mexico they don't want it back. All is well.

60 gallons! Wow, what do want to sell them for? LOL

JZ - 6-17-2022 at 09:44 AM

Who would have thought it, Americans have to drive to MX to get gas, baby formula, and tampons.

Not for sale. I use about 7 gallons a week up here during the summer so I'm hoping it will last through most of the summer until I can get back down south.
Went to the grocery last night after being gone since last October. That was a rude awakening.

bajatrailrider - 6-17-2022 at 10:56 AM

You where lucky crossing with fuel yes rude awakening . Every thing expensive now.

Shorty:
Are you using a lot of baby formula and tampons?
Not surprising that US imports goods from abroad.
The United States is the largest goods importer in the world. U.S. goods imports from the world totaled $2.5 trillion in 2019, down 1.6 percent ($40.2 billion) from 2018. China was the top supplier of goods to the United States, accounting for 18 percent of total goods imports. The top five suppliers of U.S. goods imports in 2019 were: China ($452 billion), Mexico ($358 billion), Canada ($319 billion), Japan ($144 billion), and Germany ($128 billion). U.S. goods imports from the European Union 27 were $515 billion.

Btw, US citizens don’t “have to” drive to Mexico for gasoline. They choose to drive to Mexico for gasoline. Plenty of gasoline here, people just choose to drive inefficient vehicles that make them overly-sensitive to increases in fuel costs. Addicted to oil!

Back off of JZ. He has every right to point out this sorry state of conditions. Quadruple inflation (2% to 8%) is no joke for most Americans!

:lol::lol::no::no:
Trump’s kids and in laws are grifters supreme!
For example, did you know Kimberly Guilfoyle, girlfriend of one of the trump dumbos, commanded and accepted a $60,000 fee to make a 3-minute speech introducing her boyfriend on Jan. 6?
Grifter!

Inflation is due to supply chain shock that started under trump,… will just take time to resolve.
Petroleum price is due to Putin, inflation, and is severe here because gringos have forever been buying too-big cars. Gringos are dumb. Gringos know that petroleum prices go up at unpredictable times due to uncontrollable events, gringos know that oil is a finite and decreasing resource, and gringos continue to buy too-big cars. Stupid is as stupid does.
Stop complaining about price of gasoline, and start living smarter :light:

Susie:
I think the limit is about 120 gallons, above which you need some license/permits to transport. Where did you get the 5 gal limit?
In CA, you are required to use CARB-compliant fuel containers.

Bob and Susan - 6-18-2022 at 02:04 PM

wrong goat boy...

its 4 5gal cans

How much fuel can you carry in California?
Transportation of fuel shall be accomplished by portable fuel cans with a maximum capacity of 5 gallons each, or cargo fuel tanks. All containers shall be properly labeled. Gasoline shall only be transported in Federal DOT approved Type I or Type II 5 gallon portable gas cans, with a limit of four (4) cans per vehicle.Jan 30, 2017

Suzie:
I dunno if you got it right. Pretty sure it is about 900 lbs limit.
