WTF. You make it through 80 years of life and this happens. Unbelievable.

And I say that w/o distinction of where it happened. Just awful.

edm1 - 7-29-2022 at 03:35 AM

Very bad news. Killing for a classic VW Kombi?

What a shame .......

I especially feel for Ruth, his wife left alone at 73 ....
I just hope Ruth has other family to go to...

SFandH - 7-29-2022 at 07:42 AM

Damn, that sucks. Phuuck.

freediverbrian - 7-29-2022 at 08:32 AM

Wayne was my neighbor in Gonzaga and had a house in San Felipe where the tragedy happened. He was one of kindest and giving person I know.

He always was willing to lend a hand to help even though his hands were crippled with arthritis. If I needed anything in his shop a would shout out "I need to borrow.." and before I could finish He would yell back "that's fine help your self. Then he show up to see what I was doing.

Many times as we were sitting on his patio having a beer he would say "aren't we lucky and blessed to here right now enjoying this beautiful day" . He will be greatly missed.

Sad, a person living a decent life taken out by some punk who wanted anything they could get and a temporary ride somewhere.Hope they pay the price.

RFClark - 7-29-2022 at 09:42 AM

Does this strike anyone else as strange?

This poor man was shot by someone carrying a rifle in town. The thief probably didn’t walk there to steal the Combi. So a car or truck with at least 2 or more armed people show up in the middle of the night in town not that far from the police station, fire what witnesses state were 5 shots to steal an old VW!

This sounds more like the goings on in LA Bay than SF. In fact I can’t remember the last time someone was shot during a robbery in SF! This poor man also has a place or sends time at Gonzaga Bay which is close to LA Bay where this sort of thing happens often!

David K - 7-29-2022 at 09:59 AM

Campo Ocotillos is ~5 miles north of town center.
Gonzaga Bay is about 100 road miles north of L.A. Bay.

I saw the Marina cruising around the Ejido a couple evenings ago with the machine-gun truck, I thought that was a bit strange. Guess that was what it was about.

BajaBlanca - 7-29-2022 at 10:38 AM

Very disturbing and so very sad. May he RIP and may his wife have family to help her thru this.

I was thinking the same thing! A thug with a rifle would be bad, but if there is a connection to a crooked cop or soldier who is allowed to carry a rifle, it is even worse.

RFClark - 7-29-2022 at 10:40 AM

Yes, David but there has been armed violence and carjackings around Gonzaga too! Gonzaga is also the only closed military checkpoint that I know of in BC or BCS.

I originally thought from report it was closer to town, so definitely not a person on foot, but a group way off the main highway!

David K - 7-29-2022 at 10:50 AM

Indeed, yes! No one is safe anywhere, anymore... Well, unless you have 4WD and camp where that is needed to get to!

Sucks for senior residents of Baja... Remember how our beloved Mary Ann Humfreville was kidnapped in the middle of the night... and weeks later, her burned-out pickup truck was found under a bridge, 50 miles away. Still no body found for some closure for Kevin and Miguelito, the two Humfreville children... now adults.

Mike and Mary Ann at their new home in Bahía de los Angeles, October 2005:

The last few days there have been a large number of trucks, sometimes 2 or 3 together in SF. I Think someone important was visiting and giving a speech.

This wasn’t a one person theft. Someone drove the vehicle that got them there. The Mexican military generally doesn’t use .223 rounds that’s more a cartel thing.

I have seen troops with M-16s all over Baja. Call the ammunition a 5.56 mm if you want to be accurate, but it is a .223 Remington cartridge.

mtgoat666 - 7-29-2022 at 01:05 PM

1972 ve is not typical auto theft target. Theft likely planned in advance. Should be easy to spot…

freediverbrian - 7-29-2022 at 01:11 PM

The bus was found a few hours later out of gas.

SFandH - 7-29-2022 at 02:08 PM

I hope they get those azz.holes.

I'll keep my eye on this news source

and post any new info.

Just saying, for a price there could be justice.

Every Ex-Pat who employs a local in S.F. should say NO work today, maybe manana. Until they squeeze back, it will only get worse.

SFandH - 7-29-2022 at 02:47 PM

Perhaps put a bounty on the killer's head.

If there was more than one guy, the other guy knows who the killer is.

$$$$

Seriously, you are suggesting that ex-pats turn their innocent cleaners and gardeners away with no pay because some bad dudes murdered a gringo? What an awful idea. You don't even know if the criminals were local. Maybe no one in town knows them.

Plenty of crimes in my town are perpetrated by non-locals. They hear there are lots of ex-pats and tourists here, and come here specifically to thieve. Or they are from construction crews who come to work here because there is little work where they are from. No one local knows them.

Collective punishment of workers would not seem a great tactic, but, it's been a popular tool in the past.

Huh? What does this have to do with racism? I was assuming we are talking about Mexican perpetrators here, whether they are local or from out of town- how does that relate to racism? I didn't say they were from out of town, anyway, I suggested that it is possibly a false presumption that they are locals and someone local knows who they are.

Now you could say that it is racist to assume they are Mexican- that would be true. Maybe they're some gringo tweakers, or other foreigners.

RFClark - 7-30-2022 at 09:08 PM

Anyone know where the VW was found?

Vigilante justice. Boycotts by the expat noble class!

Where do gringos get their entitlements?

Aren't we special?!?!?!?!

freediverbrian - 7-31-2022 at 09:56 AM

The bus was found just a few miles away in the edijo.

bajatrailrider - 7-31-2022 at 01:54 PM

Looks like to me the killings in that area are when. Home owner goes out his home tries to stop robbers. Better stay in house see if they enter your car boat or what ever. Then shoot them before they shoot you. Or let them take it bad people everywhere.

... and worlds away. SF is not nice anymore, too many people. Not to say that such thing can't happen in BOLA.

RFClark - 8-5-2022 at 08:06 PM

Alm,

Such a thing has happened in BofLA several times and more in a much smaller popuation!

SFandH - 8-6-2022 at 01:04 AM

I've been checking daily a Mexicali newspaper that initially reported the murder - nothing new.

Todos Santos

Lee,

3 murders this year (2022) at the Denver Airport, 5 murders at 5 points! 55 total! I’d rather be in Todos Santos!

I am aware of all the incidents of this kind. The last one was (I think) 5 years ago when guys with guns tried to steal a boat, the owner attacked them with baseball bat, was shot dead. Out of town guys. Another one was with the guy who liked drinking with wrong people, arguing, flashing his money, inviting God knows who to his casa. Was looking for trouble, the trouble found him. Random theft of a low-value item that went wrong like that one in SF, with a gringo victim - don't recall, maybe salty veterans would refresh my memory.

Meth heads and criminals everywhere. bOLA, San Felipe, etc. risk exists everywhere. Things have gotten worse with increased in population, increase in drug addiction, and to some degree the increase in cartel infiltration into all facets of Mexican life (I don’t think cartels cause many problems for gringos, but the cartel behavior and tolerance of cartels causes general decay in social mores, increased propensity in violence in all criminals and druggies).

What Mexico needs is true strong democracy, strong police (with citizen oversight to control the tendency for police to be thugs) and changes in society to stamp out pervasive corruption…

So true!!!!

Perhaps the best solution would be to just legalize it all, then have registered and taxed dispensaries to at least degrade the black market. At least the legal pot dispensaries seem to be selling at street level prices, which ought to channel demand into more regulated supply chains.

Of course, it's a complicated issue, which simple minded solutions will not solve.
