Flies? Mexican solutions?

The Gull - 4-6-2005 at 06:39 PM

I really wanted to put this on the General Discussion section, but after Doug's clarity on the subject, it became a question.

There have been various methods advanced on this board for keeping flies away from a home, patio and other areas where people congregate. I believe on this board, I have read about hanging water filled plastic bags; putting a dish of water out with ONE drop of Joy (not Palmolive) dishwashing soap in it; throwing chile powder in the coals at a BBQ; and setting out a shot of teguila (although that might have been the suggestion of my neighbor for some reason).

Since the rainfall will be creating lots of God's creatures this year and the season will only get worse as the temps rise...Please Nomads give us your best shot at curing the fly problem.:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

Grow lots of Basil. Also the baggie hung over the door 1/4 filled with water works. Add tin foil strips or pennies to maximise effect.

Bajaddict - 4-6-2005 at 06:56 PM

I'll vouch for the water filled bag method.

I will vouch for the shot of tequila but drink it and continue until the flies are no longer a problem.:lol::lol:

Do Aliens from another Galaxy get involved?

OK - flies taken care of - how do you control fleas & ticks in San Felipe ? we have 6 dogs and no feas or ticks in Vegas - so I really have no clue as to keep our dogs free of these nasty things !

due to magnetic anomalies in the earths crust below San Felipe none of the above methods of fly control will work in that aria.

house flys are killed by using Snip. This product is purchased in LaPaz

"Do Aliens from another Galaxy get involved?"

Flies ARE Aliens from another Galaxy.

Theory is that the reflection of water and metal resembles (to a fly) a spider web. Flies don't like spiders.

Maybe you could just get a bunch of spiders?

A little Puccini might work. Especially if you do the singing.

Yale Scientists Create Remote-Controlled Flies

The Gull - 4-10-2005 at 09:26 AM

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale University researchers say their study that used lasers to create remote-controlled fruit flies could lead to a better understanding of overeating and violence in humans.

Using the lasers to stimulate specific brain cells, researchers say they were able to make the flies jump, walk, flap their wings and fly.

Even headless flies took flight when researchers stimulated the correct neurons, according to the study, published in the April 7 issue of the journal Cell.

Scientists say the study could ultimately help identify the cells associated with psychiatric disorders, overeating and aggressiveness.

Biologists have long known that an electrical stimulus can trigger muscle response, but this approach used focused beams of light to stimulate neurons that would have been impossible to study using electrodes.

Gero Miesenbock, associate professor of cell biology at Yale, said if the process could be duplicated on mice, researchers might be able to better understand the cellular activity that leads to certain behavior.

"Ultimately, that could be important to understanding human psychiatric disorders," Miesenbock said. "That's really futuristic stuff."

SNIP

bajajudy - 4-10-2005 at 09:39 AM

Snip really works. Soak some stale bread in the stuff and the flies love it.
Overhead fans help too

JESSE - 4-10-2005 at 01:05 PM

Televisa showed a program a few months ago where they, along with investigators from the Mexico City University, studied wether those plastic bags full of water actually worked. The conclusion:

Nada, flies ignored the bags, and there was no proof whatsoever that the plastic bags worked.

Jesse

Thanks I didn't want to ruffle anyones feathers, because I tried them couldn't see they made any difference. Snip does the job.

Bruce R Leech - 4-10-2005 at 04:54 PM

they sure look neat hanging around like that though. I might put some up just for decoration.

Bajabus - 4-12-2005 at 10:33 AM

I saw a neat homemade flytrap that I have used and it catches a ton of flies at our place.

Get one of those 1 or 2 liter soda bottles and cut the top off about 1 inch down from the shoulder so you get a little funnel. Invert the funnel and tape it to the top of the cut off bottle. Paint the bottom a dark color, black is good. Put a small piece of meat in the bottom and set it out. The flies can get in but they can't get back out. Fills up fast in the summer.

The plastic bags filled with H2O is a myth pushed by the Mfg's of Plastic Bags....! Tried it and it seemed to me there were more flys!

The only way the bags work is if you have one of Ponpano's 'Fly Rod's' handy to SMACK those suckers as they fly around the bags...:O

A patio table that has an awning with a mosquito net draped over it also seems to work!
