Coco

Don Pisto - 8-30-2022 at 03:26 PM

looks like Coco was found dead today..

BornFisher - 8-30-2022 at 03:30 PM

Sad news. Rest in peace Coco.

AKgringo - 8-30-2022 at 03:43 PM

Sorry to hear that! He was an interesting character, I usually stopped by his place, and sometimes spent the night there. He had quite a run for someone with his medical issues.

I suppose there will be more details coming, where did this information come from?

Always a smile
and a big greeting
Great sense of humor
One of our traveling gang was a California Superior Ct Judge
Somehow Coco found that out
So when our guy signed the book, a bit later as we were set to motor on Coco showed him the addition he made under the entry
It was the drawing of a gallows, hangman/s noose, the whole picture.
Great memories
And even if your cooler was jammed full of brewskies you always paid a buck and bought another one from Coco.
It just seemed like the right thing to do.

we stopped visiting Coco probably 30 years ago....but still have the hat.

DEP Coco

advrider - 8-30-2022 at 05:52 PM

I hope someone will preserve his books, the ones that weren't stolen! I would pay good money and donate them to the museum in SF!

RIP.... True nomad

RFClark - 8-30-2022 at 08:24 PM

En tus manos, oh Señor,

Confiamos humildemente a nuestros hermanos y hermanas.

En esta vida los abrazaste con tu tierno amor;

R/. Amén

One special visit was following the 2006 Baja 1000, we stopped to visit Coco.

Roy 'The Squarecircle' traveled with us (Son Josh, Elizabeth 'Baja Angel', and David K) to help Baja Pits communications at El Crucero. These photos and captions from my web page for that trip:

It was good to see that Coco was doing well.

Coco shows my entry from January 2005 and the one from this day… ‘got baja?’

We are saddened

John M - 8-31-2022 at 09:19 AM

Barbara and I are truly saddened to hear this. We've known Coco since 1975 or '76 when he was at the little campground on the south part of downtown Ensenada. He was kind and generous to us then and remained so over the many years. He bailed us out of a jam one time when we came upon him at The Old Mill at San Quintin. We recall Coco and "Tall" Charlie [anyone remember Charley & Roberta Lavelle?]working the parking lot gate at the Bahia Hotel when that was SCORE race headquarters in Ensenada.

He was always so grateful and cheerful in spite of his daily challenges living in such a remote place. As Bajarunner mentioned, you always bought a beverage from him whether you needed it or not. Bringing him raw tomatoes was pure joy - he'd immediately scarf down one or two just like he was eating an apple. What good memories we have to have known him.

Legendary Coco - RIP

John & Barbara M

I was surprised to see this made it to my MSN news feed! I have been visiting Coco since 2012, and rarely saw him with a shirt on.

No more fish, gracias

thebajarunner - 9-2-2022 at 05:08 PM

Heading north we always left some of our excess food with him,
No point in hauling it back home
He always was grateful,
but "No fish..... no mas, gracia"

I guess living on that route saw a lot of fishermen heading home with plenty to share.

AKgringo - 9-2-2022 at 05:36 PM

I sometimes stopped and bought small amounts of fresh fruits and produce somewhere along the road when I was a half day or so from his corner. That, and canned goods, like chicken chunks or other meats.

He also told me that he didn't like fish, but canned chicken was great. He said that while showing me a can of "Chicken of The Sea" tuna!

basautter - 9-4-2022 at 04:44 AM

A sad day for sure.... I feel lucky to have visited Coco several times over the years. The legend will live on forever.

Paco Facullo - 9-6-2022 at 08:55 AM

Very sad to see him go, but we ALL gonna go someday .

Bedside the sigh-in book , I’d like to know who he bequeathed his enormous panty collection to ???

Fatboy - 9-6-2022 at 04:41 PM

I can Drive down many miles of coastline here in the states, and across miles and miles of desert in the west and it can be a beautiful drive but it has now heart, no spirit, it is just nice driving seen through a window.

But Baja seemed different, because of the people.

Like Paco said...we ALL gonna go... but a place is more than just a place, it is also the people.

With each mile paved, with each road rerouted and with each person passing it loses a little bit of what made it special.

Godspeed Coco.
