Wornouts rides look good if he can find any route not wooped out. As I said before have buddy with house there. He has dirt bikes and SXS like me. If any good routes do exist I will travel there.

The Chenowth Legacy Lodge is quite well mentioned on Baja sites, like Nomad. It is a resort just north of Percebu that has the museum of all the off road vehicle history of Lynn Chenowth. Including the famous military assault buggy made for the U.S. It will remind you of Rat Patrol's Jeeps in North Africa.

Who is Lynn chenowth? Any relation to Kristen Chenoweth?
So the museum is some old off road vehicles? (Sorry, did not see a link to a museum)
Fame - Why is the buggy famous?
My memory of rat patrol was of some soldiers running around sand dunes in Willys, sound correct?

Chenowth's are very well known in the sand sports community, I owned one back in the early '00's.

PaulW - 11-1-2022 at 09:11 AM

Chenowth made top of the category competitive race buggies. This was back in the day when VW powered rigs were very popular. The US military noticed them and he got a contract to build a fleet of them with guns and other stuff for fighting a war.
Many examples of his various rigs are on display at his museum.

Willys Overland and Ford built the Willys model for the war. Willys was called the MB (Model B) and Ford was called the GPW (General Purpose Willys). Some say the letters GP created the nick name 'Jeep'.

Thank you. I thought it would be better if it came from you.

PaulW - 12-10-2022 at 11:21 AM

I did not go, but the report was that the parking place on the south bank is now gone, and the new parking place is in the wash. Some pictures would be nice. I will go there for pics, but it not high on my to do list. The other canyons have the priority.

Of interest
I have never seen Calamity in such a clean condition. The flooding really opened it up. The race after the flooding did little harm.
BTW, INEGI calls the canyon Las Cuevitas, which would be the official name.
Anyway the driving track is a far cry from when is was first opened up to vehicle travel back in 2011-12 if I remember correctly?

David K - 2-19-2023 at 10:17 AM

Thanks Paul... Yes, these names used by Wornout come from Bruce Barber and his book on the interesting canyons and places near San Felipe. I believe it was Bruce who began these tours, then it was Baja Lou, and now Wornout?

Places near San Felipe

PaulW - 2-19-2023 at 11:06 AM

Finding places
Bruce led trips for years for the retirees group in San Felipe. Now Wornout has continued the trips.
Wornout and Lou Wells did much of the place research. Most of the trip locations were documented by Lou Wells included that info for his book. Thus we have place locations from two sources.
Lou's Community Walk link is gone but I archived the KML file for viewing.

Click on the waypoints to see if Lou left some history.

PaulW - 2-19-2023 at 11:19 AM

Names used for the locations came about and Bruce promoted the local names. Then along came GPS usage and the racers started using the names from the Mexican INEGI topo maps. Anyway the local names are still commonly used, but for find them on the maps one needs to use the INEGI name.
My arroyo writeup documents the numerous names for most all of the washes.

Details of the story were recently declassified. It was the British SAS, and Ben Macintyre recently published the book Rogue Heroes.

Pretty interesting beginnings of offroad in N Africa, and great read.

1 km. south of here is the road

Two cinderblock columns at the road.

Dead marine life washes ashore here, like small whales, dolphins, and totuavas. In all the 45 years since I began camping here, often multiple times per year, this is the first turtle I have seen! This can only mean their numbers are coming back, greater than before the 1960s when we began camping on the south beaches (Nuevo Mazatlan), and never saw them. Great news...

It's so relaxing there... miles of sand... and shells!

The north end of the island is opposite Rancho Percebu.

The salt flat road was used to go north to Percebu. This was how we drove to Shell Island often, before the modern road of 1982+

The Chenowth Museum, a mile north of Percebu.
