North of Loreto?

Tommy A - 10-23-2022 at 02:44 PM

Going to be in Loreto next week and planning on renting a car for a few days, have been South of Loreto but not North. Any recommendations on what to see up there on a day trip? Little towns, restaurants?

Thx

A really fun day trip is going up to San Basillo. It's about 25 miles North of Loreto and than 10 miles on an easy dirt road to the bay.

North of Loreto is the entire Bahia Concepcion / Mulege / Punta Chivato area. Tons of exploring and offloading there.

You definitely would want to get on a panga and see the beautiful islands in Concepcion.

The mission visita ruin of San Juan Londó is just 1 km. west of the highway, at Km. 30 (north of Loreto). The ruins date back to about 1699 making it one of the oldest standing structures in all the Californias.

A visita was a visiting chapel attcahed to the head mission. In this case, that was Loreto (1697), but later, transfered to the newer and closer mission of San José de Comondú (1708).

The above photos are from 2017. My last time there was in 2019, guiding Cameron Steele's Trail of Missions Recon Team for the TV show. Here is when I taught the group about this visita and what a visita was: https://youtu.be/YePZWvJdFCg?t=169

With a rental car I would stick to the pavement. They are still working on dirt roads after the hurricane and it's hard to say what condition they are in now.

My friends in Mulege say the weather is perfect now and all is pretty quiet. Bahia Concepcion and Mulege should be on your list.

I would go to Mulege for sure!

It is so charning, full of cafes, restaurants, art and people.

Los Equipales for breakfast and El Candil for lunch! Both are excellent.

The next map north of the one I shared above:

If there on a Tuesday.... the restaurant/bar at buenaventura (on Bahia Concepcion) does a taco tuesday thing... great food and live music at an open air style beach bar... make it a stop... then go find your own beach to hang! great time of year to be there.
