Does anyone have recent road conditions out to San Borja from the pavement? Im wondering if all the rain this year has really affected the road. Thank

People go in and out of there regularly and recently without commenting about the road on their Facebook posts. I am friends with the
(Gerardo/Gaxiola) family in person and on Facebook and they had a big event with their father José, coming to visit him at the mission. Here is the

What are you driving? Pretty much a typical Baja graded dirt road, perhaps best in a pickup or SUV. 4WD is not needed in dry weather.
There are two roads to the mission from "the pavement". The north road goes south from the L.A. Bay Highway (Km. 45). The west road goes east from
Highway 1 at (Nuevo) Rosarito (Km. 52).

Two months ago we went in from the Bay of Los Angeles Road. The only time 4WD was helpful was the first 100 yards upon leaving the highway as there
was ongoing road work and we had to get off the pavement a couple of hundred yards east of the regular turn off and the shoulder/wash we had to drive
on was quite soft sand.
Leaving San Borja toward Highway 1, all went well until we missed a bypass to the right at about 2/3 of the way to the highway and tried to cross a
wide wash to regain the main road which had been washed out. The bypass goes off to the right at a slight angle and is now the most traveled.

Thank John... Of the two roads to or from San Borja (north & west), which would you say was a nicer or easier drive now? I have always liked the
north road over the west one. Both are almost exactly the same length, about 22 miles from pavement.
I did chat with Angel last night (one of José's sons who grew up at the mission) on Facebook, and he said the west road (to Nuevo Rosarito) had been

For what it is worth....I was fortunate enough to find a tire shop at the west end of the road, just out of sight, but very near Hwy 1.
They did a good job, and right away!

We drive it in mid-spring and have never seen the desert so green and spectacular. The road in from the Bay of Los Angeles was by far prettier than
from San Borja to the Pacific.
The road west, toward the pacific was a good deal smoother, I guess that translates to faster if that is what you are looking for.
Jose was just as polite and helpful as I remember from previous visits. I didn't see any other sort of peculiar behavior as I believe some here have
mentioned. He welcomed us to camp but the day was way too early.

Great to hear about José being receptive of visitors, again.
How did the palapas look? I thought during his rage that he tore them down?
Did you know there are/ were flush toilets and showers built in the cliff facing the fields, behind the palapas? José offered to light the fire under
the water heater for a hot shower.

Just an off-topic reminiscence. When I was in my Spanish language book collection phase (!), I brought down a box of books/maps for Angel and Henry -
they were about 12 and 15 then. They were happy to have them. They told us all about how the rural schoolteacher comes to their area for about 3

On Facebook, we have: 'Angel Eduardo G', 'José Jesus Gerardo Gaxiola', 'Genaro Gerardo G', and daughter Nonnih as 'Gerardo Nonnih'. The other
daughter, Brisa, is not online.
Their mother is online as 'Licia Guerrero' (and also as 'Ana Licia Gaxiola Garcia'). Angel also has the 'Misión San Borja Adac' page.
Such great kids... and they recently had a get together at José Gerardo's (their dad's home, still) at the mission.
