Howdy fellows,

I'm looking for some info on driving from bahia asuncion to punta abreojos along the coast. The road on google maps is called Cam A Bahia Ascuncion. Is it gnarly? I'm gunna be in a subaru without super high clearance, but it get get along pretty decent on rougher dirt roads. Would love to have some info!

The road is well used, and if you are lucky, at least parts of it will be fairly recently graded. I have driven it when it was a smooth sailing road, and when parts of it were wash board from hell!

Unless there has been a recent storm it is passable for just about anything.

Haven't driven it since 2009 but I remember hauling on that road in a 2WD 3500 Ram Van with 50psi in the tires rather easily.

What ever you do do not stop below high tide or you may end up with

a stuck flooded car .

Someone made a nice video of some real good surf fishing along that

road. Real big peach etc. before he knew it his car was caught in the

waves. His truck never ran right after that but he did go back after

getting a new truck.

Believe it or not people have also died along that road due to

riding misfortunes while on motorcycles taking the humps a bit too

fast.

Ditch Google Maps in Baja!
The road is wide, graded, 2WD, and usually fast. You go nowhere close to being in the high tide zone. This road parallels the coast but sadly keeps far enough away that the you don't see the supreme beach along this way. Do not drove into the wet sand if you do take a side trip to the ocean. The famous video is about a Toyota Tundra and the poor decision its owner made. It it rusting away at the Punta Prieta junk yard (L.A. Bay jcn.)

Was just there.its typical graded, washboard road- not too bad actually all they say to Hipolito.we were able to run salt/ mudflats ( nice and smooth) for some ,Ike’s when leavin Hipolito. Road gets pretty darn rough last 4-5 miles before la bocana. After that paved to Abreojos. We were in full size Chevy 4x4 trucks.

Sounds about right. In 2017, I recorded the Abreojos to Asunción distance at 50.4 miles.

This is page 3 of my June trip album: Leaving Mission Santa Gertrudis, going up to San Francisco de la Sierra, overnight at San Ignacio, then to Punta Abreojos and up to Bahía Asunción.

More photos from that trip were posted here on Nomad and on Tacoma World in the trip reports section. The photos were preserved on Tacoma World but on Nomad, they were only hot-linked to Photobucket which had since cancelled their honoring of the free photo hosting. That meant the photos were no longer sized to fit Nomad and now have a big watermark across them. Took the road with mi vecino in BA, Paul Camacho, this spring after our clinic in La Paz. I always like to take a couple of weeks for re-entry and to unwind after the hectic clinics. Anyway, Paul hadn’t been on that road for years and years, so we took the whole day and drove to La Bocana (dropping off some school supplies for Blanca’s friends and having lunch), then on to Punta Abreojos, eastward to Mex. 1, up to Vizcaino, and then back to BA. Took most of the day and drove ~200 miles. The dirt portion of the trip had areas of washboard so bad that the plastic right rear taillight assembly on my truck vibrated loose and fell off!

Has anyone kept along the coast from Abreojos to Scorpion bay? I've heard it's not for the faint of heart / it's better to approach scorpion from the south unless you've got a gnarly rig and some large kehones.

Easily doable in a UTV. A Jeep, etc. doable with about 12PSI.

I'm in a crosstrek. Not the best offroad vehicle around, understandably. Does pretty well on stuff that's not super rutted out or rock gardens, of course clearance is an issue.

It's a relatively light AWD vehicle, that's good, IMHO. Carry a compressor so you can air down and then back up when needed.

Hey Udo,
If you start in Abreojos how do you traverse the entrance to San Ignacio Lagoon? Am I missing something? Is it passable at low tide? I’d love to take mi hijo and mi yerno down on a “surfari” stopping at every break between BA and Scorpion Bay in my Zuki Samurai.

Folks in Asuncion have been telling visitors unless ya have a truck or off road specific rig ya might not want to take that road right now. I imagine if you aired down and took your time shouldn’t be an issue, but those last few miles before bocana, it’s rough so be prepared.

As for the road getting paved it will help citizens of both towns and Prieta and Hipolito make the commute between them for sure.

Take a look at a map, between Abreojos and San Juanico (Scorpion Bay) are huge lagoons. You begin the drive to San Juanico back at San Ignacio where a paved road leaves town and runs for 30 miles then turns into a wide graded dirt road for 6 miles to San Ignacio Lagoon where the whale watching camps begin. This dirt road also has a left fork that avoids the lagoon camps (signed San José de Gracia), 4.6 miles after the pavement's end. The distance from the lagoon to San Juanico is 61 miles or about 107 miles from San Ignacio.

I understand all of the above, been on that route (on the flats) a few times over the last several years. What I didn’t understand was Udo’s post but maybe I misinterpreted. I thought he made it sound that there was a coastal route running from Bahía Asunción to San Juanito/Scorpion Bay!

Because you didn't include the entire posts/quotes it is not easy to recreate the quotes. The key, Paul, is to be careful not to begin your reply until after the entire tag. It was accidental but using edit, you can fix these.

As for your original question, I think Udo was just answering with general graded road driving info and not saying there is a road directly south from Punta Abreojos to San Juanico.

On a side note: someone here on bajanomad once wrote a a prickly driving situation where the wife got out and said "No reason for both of us to die today LOL" I used that line the other day so THANK YOU to whomever

The biggest issue on that road is the washboard, not clearance. The section between Asuncion and San Hippolito gets graded periodically but it deteriorated very fast. The section between La Bocana and San hippolito is pretty bad. You have to air way way down to protect your car. There are gas stations at both Abreojos and Asuncion so there is no need for a pump. Most gringos at Asuncion drive all the way back to the highway to avoid that dirt road when going to Asuncion. The Mexicans haul ass over it ( which creates deeper washboards).

I would never take my Subaru on that road...just too rough and sketchy in spots and it really knocks out censors etc. and are rocks and the Subaru is just too low and delicate.
I just sold it and bought a Dodge Dakota Sport which handled that road last week like a champ! less than an hour and a half and easy peasy in a good truck. You dont need 4X4 but clearance and good suspension are cruciall.
