I was reading Baja Insider yesterday & they have a story on Baja GPS maps that you download through MapSource. Looks good. You might want to look at :

Interesting - if I had a mapping model Garmin I probably would go for it.

Be careful, in their links page is Amigos de Baja's Bajanet.com and BajaSi.com BOTH LONG DEAD!

My Garmen Legend has main roads and coastline of Baja already in it... Not sure the maps they show have a lot more roads or accurate deatail?

In any event, this is perhaps better than what is in the map GPS's, the price is low, and I wish them well!

But, at least change the long gone Amigos link to forums.bajanomad.com, wher most of us came!

Garmin Blue charts

I know that this is mainly for marine use, but I just ordered the Garmin Blue Charts Zone 1 which includes Baja California and the Sea of Cortez. I'll be downloading it onto a Garmin GPSMap 76 CS. I'll try and remember to write a review as to the quality, accuracy, and usefulness for Baja and the Sea as soon as I can.

Here's the link to Garmin's Blue Charts:

I also saw he had the old Amigos Board on the links page. I will let him know. You might read the story with a few more screen shots at:

I have this software, and for the money its OK. It is better than what Garmin has, but it's pretty basic stuff good for tracking your progress and seeing how far places are from you (using mapping pointer). Once you start loading in waypoints you will see that many of the roads are a little off, particularly the more primitive ones (not unlike the Baja Almanac). Very noticeable during the recent Pole Line trip. No way near Ozi maps made from the almanac, but it is loadable to your Garmin.

If you have tracks of the Pole line trip, or any others you can send me, I would be glad to make the corrections and send you an updated map file.

Also, thanks guys for pointing out the bad links, I deleted them. Please let me know of anything else.

LarryB,
I?m glad to see you are getting the word out on your work. Cool article in bajainsider.com :bounce:

LarryB,
I do like your Baja map. Personally it satisfies my need to see where I am on a map for travel and geocaching. In my response earlier, I was trying to be very objective to the question asked. The pole line trip was the first time I have used the GPS with the software loaded and I will send you the track so that you can see what I was talking about. I do have a large number of waypoints loaded into my GPS and some just don't line up with the map. Of course, this is not unusual for any Baja maps. I am leaving this weekend for a trip down to Bahia de Los Angeles and a great deal of other places along the way. Will be taking many waypoint readings with an eye for being extremely accurate so that I will be able to know if there are errors in my waypoints or the map. I am going to send an email to your website with my email address, so that we might communicate further on this.

I have been saving GPS tracks into Ozi and projecting them on maps for a while now - one of the biggest problems trying to see how they match the Almanac is registering the map after it's scanned - same with the Mex topo's available from INEGI on CD. Projecting them on satellite images that self register in Ozi produces a pretty good picture. If you would be interested in sharing the Ozi track file for Pole Line road ( I have the Wpts and jpegs from Ken) I would like to put them on the satellite projection. I have tracks, mainly in the Valle Chico - H3 to Matomi areas and a few others if you were interested. Bajalou@gmail.com

Thanks

bajalou,
Will send you the track I made, but it is a mapsource file (mps) not an ozi file (map). You may be able to convert it, I wouldn't know how.
BTW, in case you didn't know, my geocaching handle is Team A&M. Came for a visit to your house a year or so ago, remember?

Team A&M - of course I remember - good to hear from you and come back by anytime.

Think Wornout has a GPS that can use Mapsource files, then download go Ozi ??? We'll give it a try - Thanks
