We tried to drive out to there February 2019 with 2004 2wd Sprinter. The road was pretty bad in several places and we were able detour around those.
About 1/2mile from the crater there was a big wash with a steep hill on the far side. The beginning of the climb out had a pretty big eroded ledge
that was impassable so we had to walk the rest of the way. A couple in a mid-90s Tacoma 4x4 tried several times to get up the ledge but couldn’t. He
wasn’t very aggressive in his attempts so it may have been possible.
Lots of sea lions were there including some pups struggling in the heavy surf to get onto the beach. Well worth the little side trip. I’ll look for
some pictures.
