On a recent self-inflicted debit card issue that had me driving up to the border on short notice for a replacement card, I had a "WTF?? Moment" as I
crossed into Baja Norte at the 28th parallel. Something was missing from the monument: the huge eagle that is usually the first thing I notice on the
horizon as I approach Guerrero Negro was no longer there! Or at least, it has had its wings chopped off.
On my return trip, I pulled into the military gate where a sentry is posted to ask what had happened to it. After some joking between the two
guys on duty about it flying away, they shared that it had been removed for maintenance by "la empresa" that runs the nearby facilities and was
somewhere in the vicinity being worked on.
Since it's been 50 years since its initial mounting, I suppose that salty-air environment has taken its toll and some badly-needed corrosion
control is in order by now...but for all I know this isn't the first time its left its post.

Pretty impressive wingspan. I wonder what the MPF (meters per flap) is?

OMG... On the 50th anniversary, no less!
Thanks Steve.
