I swore by the Moon Baja Handbook in the early- and mid-'80s -- Joe Cummings did a great job! Highly recommended.

Likewise, I thought Joe's work stood out above the other similar types of guides (at the time) when he was producing content for Moon. I believe I even got quoted in regards to that on the back cover of the '98 guide David has here.

My understanding is that Joe had a place in Todos Santos BCS at some point. He later permanently moved to (and still resides in) Thailand, fwiw.

All the Moon guides have been invaluable. Most recently I purchased one for the Oaxaca region.

I know this is an old original post. But wouldn't it be great if we had a Baja stuff swap meet? In San Diego? People bring books, gear. I too have a lot of Baja books that I collected years ago for the intended Baja Cactus library that I guess was never developed (they were trying to devise a check-out, borrowing system). I gave away a box of children's books in Spanish few years ago -- but still have a box of guides, and Baja-related books taking up space I'd rather be cleared.
We could have it at a Mexican restaurant that has a party room or something. Maybe a show-and-tell with slides (a projector set up) or photos. ??? The Baja authors can offer their books.

Hi Wilderone, yes I too donated books to Antonio for the future Baja Cactus library.
Obviously, things don't go as planned. Covid and cartel violence sure hurt his Motel and Pemex income. Then, Highway 5 opening siphoned away much business. Business income needed to build. Mexican banks don't lend money as easily as American banks.

When I last talked to Antonio about the books, he assured me they are safe and when the restaurant/ tourist services building is opened the books will have a new home.

Sorry to hear Antonio has had some troubles. Antonio could just put the books out in a lounge area for his guests. Even sell them ... we who can donate can do so again in the future if the circumstances change.

He was concerned that these books might wander off. Many may be valuable collectors items. The temptation may be too great? Antonio really values them greatly. Of course it has been years since we talked about them. I can only hope that he reads Baja Nomad, still.

No, he doesn't say anything but it wouldn't surprise me. I have tried to call and email him many times the past few years. No reply. His manager at Baja Cactus Motel in El Rosario says be he is fine and there are no problems.

I last saw him in El Rosario in 2019 when I was with the America Unearthed TV crew, eating at Mama Espinoza's. We all stayed at Baja Cactus one night for the episode about the Viking Ship story, here are the edited to 4 minutes filmed in Baja (over 3 days): https://youtu.be/p7qPoqHSPXE
