Aside fromn the blowhole what other cool things are there to do in that area. Any ATV rentals or the like.. Wil I need a tourist card to enjoy the punta banda area?

Things to do in Punta Banda...

Camping is good at Campo La Jolla or Villarinos. At low tide you can dig a hole in the sand at the north end of Campo La Jolla's beach and have your own hotspring tub. You can walk along miles of beach, rent horses, hunt for clam fossils, take a ride on a motorized hang glider, drive over the hill at Rancho Kennedy and Arbolitos and see the Pacific ocean for miles to the south, beautiful kayaking there, great shore fishing. Rent a panga from Ivan Villarino who's house is across the street from the Elementary school. You may catch Yellowtail, Cabrilla, etc. with you guide Beto.

Best tacos in the world, in our opinion are in Maneadero, at "Recreo". Right hand side of the road, right after it narrows into one lane from two.

"Valle" market in Cantu will have most of the supplies, Tecate, water, you may need as well as excellent meat.

Vegies, eggs, water, bread are available at the La Bufadora Fruiteria, not in La Buf but in Cantu. "Bernie" and "Fernando/Bandito" are great guys.

At La Bufadora you can have a great dinner on Fri. night at Gordo's as well as breakfast on Sat. and Sun. You do not have to pay to park in that lot if you are a patron of the restaurant. Friday night is considered local/gringo night, where you will meet interesting people who live there and may have more fun ideas of what you and your family can do. Initiate yourself with the locals with a shot of Chuy's snake tequila, as they pound the bar and cheer you on!

Go see the blowhole, spend some money at the shops if you like.

I'll attach a few photos.
This one is of Chuy and his famous snake tequila.

This photo is taken over the hill from Punta Banda. You will see the boat launch used by the Sea Urchin fishing co-op. This is a good place to lauch kayaks and do some close in shore fishing.

Paulina - 4-29-2005 at 07:17 PM

This is Arbolitos, just below the launch ramp. Great kayaking here as well.

Paulina - 4-29-2005 at 07:27 PM

This shot will be the last, it is taken from the top of the hill that leads to Kennedy and Arbolitos, looking back towards Ensenada.

Can you tell that we are a little bit homesick?

Things to do at Bufadora

Gypsy Jan - 4-29-2005 at 10:02 PM

you can stop at the many real estate offices and/or roadside stands going in offering olives, honey and many other pickled delectables along with tacos, carnitas, birria, etc., etc. (You can eat very well, too, in street stands and restaurants on the alley walk to Bufadora).

Also, along the alley are shops that have some of the best designer purse and accessory knockoffs outside of Asia (Dooney and Bourke, Gucci, Pucci, Louis Vuitton, etc., etc.), just inspect the quality of the hardware and stitching, that's where the cheapos screw up. I bought a *Dooney and Bourke* tote for $35 that is large enough to slip my laptop in and I have been stopped on the street and asked where I bought it and then, the conversation was, "You paid more than $x thousand for that, didn't you?"

There are several very, very good quality jewelery stores offering first class silver pieces; if the displays and store front looks interesting, step in and browse and ask questions, the good places are not pushy (no touts outside) and will do backflips to accomodate you.

There are dive shops on the approach road, offering scuba/snorkeling rentals (and probably guided trips), I don't have any experience with them.

All in all, the Bufadora is a reliably interesting trip, a full collision of tourists from two different cultures out to enjoy themselves fully if you go the the tourist route, but it is also surrounded by so much natural beauty when you go off to the beaten path. I highly recommend it.

The photos Paulina posted brought back many memories of the Kennedy camp area. Back in the 70s and 80s we did a lot of scuba diving and snorkeling in the cove. Abalone, lobster, scallops and fish. We feasted like kings. Even rescued a young man from the university in Ensenada that shot himself in the leg with his speargun.

turtleandtoad - 4-30-2005 at 04:41 PM

There is a flea market on Friday and Saturday afternoons at the Maneadero turn-off to El Bufo, first dirt road on the right after the turn, if you're into that sort of thing. I picked up a great surf rod and reel for 50 pesos in March.

Me No - 4-30-2005 at 04:54 PM

There is also a great flea market on Wed's in central Maneadero. Fresh produce and lots of unique finds.

Hose A. Next time I am down south I want to have you and your family to my place for a BBQ.

El Bufo (for a scale reference, note the four girls on the ledge in the upper right corner). This was a calm day, it was really blowing the day before but I forgot to put a memory card in my camera and didn't realize it until I got back to the RV.

Bruce R Leech - 4-30-2005 at 04:57 PM

when you are tired of shopping you can try cliff diving and impress your Friends.

Me No - 4-30-2005 at 04:58 PM

Nice shot turtle, or is it toad. LOL

turtleandtoad - 4-30-2005 at 05:35 PM

Me No

You can call me anything you want except late for lunch.

Actually, Turtle and Toad are in the below picture, I'm just the owner.

Me No - 5-1-2005 at 11:31 AM

Which one is the Turtle and which is the toad. Aaah! I think I got it. You need a few cans of green spray paint for that car.

Nice set up. Where are you parked now?

[Edited on 5-1-2005 by Me No]

Blue Toad

turtleandtoad - 5-1-2005 at 12:17 PM

What? you've never seen a blue toad before?

Like the turtle, I travel with my home on my back, so the RV is the Turtle.

My car spends most of its time being towed (toad) behind.

These names are also the licence plates on the vehicles.

Currently I'm in the Allegheny National Forest, doing some camp hosting and fishing for the summer. I'll be back on the Baja when it cools down a little.

It's a rough life but somebody has to do it. :P

PS, that picture was taken at Port Townsend, WA.

Our kids also enjoy surfing on the Punta Banda beach ...waves are usually fairly small making it safe for beginners. Also as mentioned before, digging a hole in the sand near La Jolla to enjoy the hot springs. Riding a mountain bike on the beach (avoiding the people of course) is also fun.
Those of you who know the area, can you give me any info on the new hotel being built there? We can't find any info on it, i.e. how big?? when it is to open???
Enjoy!!!KSC

Me No - 5-2-2005 at 02:00 PM

No new hotel. However, there are plenty of existing ones. I recomend the Bay Shores Inn.

Arthur - 5-2-2005 at 03:03 PM

Shoot, Hose A -- I was going to ask you to have a talk with my 19-year-old.

KSC - 5-2-2005 at 03:16 PM

Our home is in the Fisher Camp....when walking south on the beach toward La Jolla, some building is starting on what looks to be a big project. Rumor has it, it is owned by the same people who own Las Rosas Hotel in Ensenada. Thats all we know. Hope I'm wrong...
KSC

lizard lips - 5-2-2005 at 03:36 PM

The project you are speaking of is owned by the Novelo family of Estero Beach and Las Rosas. They have owned this property for several years and have been in the process of developing this land for retired folks to enjoy an area which will be secure and enjoyed by all. There will also be a restaurant which can be used by everyone. KSC I dont know why you posted" I hope Im wrong?" The Novelo's have offered a superior resort enviroment and have been very cautious as to preserving the enviroment within and around their resorts. If it was any one else I would be watching this very carefully but believe me you will never see motorcycles racing around or fireworks going off at 10pm when you are trying to sleep. The land where this is happening is very small compared to their other projects and will only host a very small amount of people. KSC not to worry about a thing other than Agua Caliente trailer park just to the North. That place should be your concern. The place is an eye sore and the people there are disgusting. A little class in that area is what Punta Banda needs!

KSC - 5-2-2005 at 05:46 PM

Thank you for your info...it gives me a different perspective as to this development project. I know growth in that area is inevitable, so if it is done right it could be a good thing for the people of the area, both Americans and Mexicans.
I also agree with you on the camping just south of that spot...it gets out of control frequently!
Just want to be a good neighbor, KSC

greybaby - 5-2-2005 at 11:18 PM

Other than this board, our only contact here is with locals and they are telling us this area is supposedly to become THE tourist area of Ensenada. We live on the hillside in Cant? and I can't quite imagine that but there has definitely been more building activity up the road. There is a hotel being built according to a friend of ours who does deliveries for a building material place in Ensenada. Between Cant? and LaJolla. All we need is more traffic out here in the summertime!!!

Me No - 5-3-2005 at 06:47 AM

Grey, Do I know you? I too have a place on the hill in Cantu. My wife is the cute girl that rides around on the blue honda 70.

The hotel is news to me and I spent 3 weeks there last month.

greybaby - 5-3-2005 at 09:08 AM

I'm not sure if you do or not. We live right in front of the police. Have for three years. I'm a runner and either run near the beach or along the road and my husband rides his bike. Great place, isn't it? The police have been more than helpful and even when we had to be gone for 6 weeks last summer when my husband had surgery, they watched our house for us.

Me No - 5-7-2005 at 05:06 AM

OK, I don't think we have met but I know where you live. Carlos is our landlord. I believe he is your neighbor. We live just above the ejido office. Yes, it is nice to have the police right there, we have never had any problems. Next time I see you I will say hi.

greybaby - 5-7-2005 at 09:07 AM

Me No,

I don't think I know who you are but am trying to place where you live. So you live close to Danny Rios? Yes, we live right next door to Carlos. He is very nice. And we have Chuy above us with his grand house!! We think his retaining wall cost more than our house!! How long have you all lived here? And where are you from? You'll have to stop by. Would love to meet you.

Me No - 5-7-2005 at 06:01 PM

I can be seen around town on a three wheeler. Very gringo looking. I'm from Vegas, but I'll give you the whole story when we meet. I am planning on being down next weekend for a BBQ with a few of the Real people from the board here. I'll stop by in the mourning to confirm.

greybaby - 5-8-2005 at 01:54 PM

Sounds great. We'll be around.
