Considers it appropriate Congress of the Union, update to the Mexican fishing law
The Economic Affairs Committee of the Union Congress considered appropriate the proposal with point of agreement submitted by the Senator Homero Davis
Castro to urge #SADER and #CONAPESCA to incorporate, in the National Quality Infrastructure Program 2026, the revision and update of the Official
Rules Mexicans related to the sustainable exploitation of tunas, shrimp and sport-recreational fishing.
The proposal, as part of Mexico's international commitments as the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, seeks to address the backlog in fishing
regulations that has not been modified since 2013.
In the case of Tunidians, the absence of clear extraction limits and restriction zones were noted, which has allowed fishing vessels to operate near
the coast, with negative impacts on corals, reefs and other species. The proposal plans to establish a strip of at least 50 nautical miles where
fishing with netting is not allowed.
Regarding shrimp, the current ban on drag fishing at depths less than 5 arms (9.14 meters) was considered insufficient to protect juvenile
populations, proposing the establishment of specific areas or a wider minimum depth for the use of drag nets.
In the realm of sport-recreational fishing, the lack of regulation in minimum catch sizes and quantitative limits was
highlighted, particularly in shore fishing. It is proposed that the relevant NOM defines technical criteria on sizes, catch limits, verification
mechanisms and mandatory use of rod, reel and artificial lures.
With this point of agreement, Congress seeks to promote a modern and sustainable regulatory framework that ensures the conservation of marine
resources and the competitiveness of the productive activities of the sector.
Following the instructions of the Governor of the State, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío the FONMAR led by Martín Inzunza Tamayo, has collaborated
with initiatives presented both in the House of Deputies and the House of Senators, to promote the update of the national fishing framework towards a
responsible, sustainable and protective activity to the species intended exclusively for sport fishing.

Several years ago we were staying at Archelon, in LABay
Panga pulled up next to the fish cleaning table and three Gringos climbed out with their skipper, a local kid that was well known around.
They proceeded to dump over 40 yellowtails on the table, half of them in the 12-16" range.
I looked at the young dude and simply said "Por que?"
And he just shrugged and started gutting fish.

Wow - shame on them. You'd think red Rooster III would be all for upholding ethical practices and protecting the Biosphere Reserve.
