Cinco de Mayo in San Jose del Cabo

BrianBenson - 5-2-2005 at 02:02 PM

Anything going on for Cinco de Mayo in San Jose del Cabo this year? Or is it true that this holiday is only heavily celebrated in the states.

Cheers

The gringos will be celebrating

jrbaja - 5-2-2005 at 02:20 PM

without knowing why, and the Mexicans won't as it's not particularly a major holiday here.:lol:

Anonymous - 5-4-2005 at 06:46 AM

JR, Mexico will celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Because it falls on a Thursday not only will that day be a holiday but they will also get Friday off as well, so this will be a four day holiday for all Mexican Citizens as well as this Gringo raising his glass in the direction of Puebla. It really is a major holiday here in Mex.

bajajudy - 5-4-2005 at 06:57 AM

I am sorry to disagree with the person with no name, but I have never seen much celebration here for Cinco de Mayo. I have a friend who says it was dreamed up by the American greeting card industry. Americans wouldn t tolerate celebrating a holday in which they were defeated so defeating the French at Puebla seemed like a great thing for Mexican Americans to celebrate.
As far as I know everything is open tomorrow here
Bryan, are you having a good time? Try Cactus Jacks or some place in town if you are looking to celebrate.

this is not correct. no wonder you were embarrassed to put your name on this post:lol::lol:

lizard lips - 5-4-2005 at 07:19 AM

Bruce, That was me who posted without a name. Usually Im logged on when I go into this site however I posted that with out my name by mistake.

No Bruce you are wrong. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican National Holiday. Please look it up.

With all due respect,

fdt - 5-4-2005 at 07:21 AM

but the person with no name is correct, it is a 4 day weekend, we have been planning on this since last year, same as we planed Easter when I had the opportunity to meet with you Bruce in Mulege. While you are correct that there is no major celebration as in the USA, it still is a national holiday. And the best part of all is that we will be attending the 50th aniversary celebration @ Disneyland, that happens to be on May 5. The kids are counting down the hours. Here is the school calendar for May http://www.educacionbc.edu.mx/calendario/default.asp

it is a Holiday in the way that st. Valentine's day is . no banks will close no one gets the day off there are no parades except maybe in some tourist areas no schools close for 5 De Mayo the schools here are closed Thursday Friday and Monday and Tuesday 6 day weekend but it has nothing to do with 5 De mayo:lol:

lizard lips - 5-4-2005 at 09:53 AM

Bruce,
It is not a holiday like "St. Valentines Day" . Please check. You have the internet, look it up. IT IS NATIONAL HOLIDAY. If you look at Lencho's post he even works for the Mexican Govt. and he gets the day off. My Son will not go to school tomorrow. Bruce please check your sources before you post things you have no idea on what you are talking about!!!!!!

I just asked my neighbor (Mexican)

jrbaja - 5-4-2005 at 10:25 AM

and he wasn't sure either. He thought that schools got the day off and wasn't sure of banks and businesses.

Sounds like something along the lines of Martin Luther King Day! Another good reason to not go to school.

10 years of living in Rosarito and the only people I ever saw celebrating 5 de Mayo was the gringos. It was a huge deal in the states though. Another good reason to get drunk!:lol:

you are right I was wrong. I am sorry. I had misinformation.:(

Now we just need to get out

jrbaja - 5-4-2005 at 10:35 AM

and tell the Mexicans about their holiday and that they should be celebrating!:lol::lol::lol:

lizard lips - 5-4-2005 at 10:41 AM

Dont be sorry Bruce, tomorrow as the Sun is coming up look towards Puebla and take a long hard swig on some really good Tequila (coffee in my case) and give a little SALUD for those who lost there life on that day. War is pure hell, Ive been there and know first hand and days like tomorrow should be remembered for what it is.

For those people in the U.S. who dont have a clue and will be trying to pick up a loose one at El Torrito and drink 2 for 1 margaritas have a great day also.
:spingrin:

Mike Supino - 5-4-2005 at 10:42 AM

And how to celebrate the true p-gringo way!!!!!

Bruce R Leech - 5-4-2005 at 10:43 AM

thanks Mr. Lips I will do that. coffee for me also.

Ok, here is how it works

fdt - 5-4-2005 at 10:46 AM

In M?xico, same as in the US there are dates to celebrate, conmemorate or observed, celebraciones, conmemoraciones y dias de descanso obligatorio. In this particular case, 5 de Mayo, we conmemorate the Batalla de Puebla, it is not "obligatorio" . Schools in M?xico take many days off, specialy basic education, preescolar, primaria y secundaria, and May is one of the best months for that, specialy if May 1st is on a Monday like it will be in 2006. May 1st, observed (Monday) so no school for 3 days, May 5, conmemorated (Friday) so no school for 3 days, May 10, celebrated as mothers day (Tuesday) so yes school, but no classes and May 15, celebrated as teachers day (Monday) so again no school for 3 days.
Here are the only "observed" days according to the Ley Federal del Trabajo, Federal Labor Law
Art?culo 74. Son d?as de descanso obligatorio:

I. El 1o. de enero;

II. El 5 de febrero;

III. El 21 de marzo;

IV. El 1o. de mayo;

V. El 16 de septiembre;

VI. El 20 de noviembre;

VII.

Sharksbaja - 5-4-2005 at 10:49 AM

I remember Cinco last year in Mulege. I kept waiting for the music and fiesta to start. Zip, nada. zero.
So that evening it was just me, the dog and Dick Dale on CD.

Cincodemayo - 5-4-2005 at 10:58 AM

Well now....it's my B-Day so all the gringos will be celebrating as I will....A few years ago the wife and I flew down to Coronado Island and went to OLD TOWN San Diego.
They closed off all the streets and it was a town party on Cinco...it was a hoot as the Mexican restaurant there was totally packed with partiers.

Dave - 5-4-2005 at 11:24 AM

How could it not be a national holiday? Mayo is the most important food in Mexico. Nothing eatable is served without it being in it, or on it.

I will celebrate in the traditional way:

While facing north/east toward Chicago, eating a piece of Bimbo bread lathered with lots of mayonnaise and afterwards thrice repeating:

Viva Hellmann's!

Like Spring Break

jrbaja - 5-4-2005 at 11:32 AM

there should be cinco de mayo "hot spots". Doubt you'll find any in Mexico though.
I would think that Old Town would be "the place" to be on that date!
Happy Birthday Cinco! Mines the 12th and I'll be in San Bartolo Bambooing :bounce:

Cincodemayo - 5-4-2005 at 11:35 AM

Well Happy B-Day to you JR ! Another Taurean!
This will be the big "50" ! It's wierd my b-date is 5-5-55 and I went thru the fiftyfifth fire academy down in Huntington Beach...So when the lottery hits 55 million I'll get fiftyfive tickets!

so is mine JR

Sharksbaja - 5-4-2005 at 11:38 AM

May 12, 1953 . Ouch, that year gets harder to say. Bunch o Bull(s)

I'd stick with it Cinco !

jrbaja - 5-4-2005 at 11:52 AM

Me too Sharks. Big 52 coming right up. I better get back in them hills while I still can jejejejejejeje

Sharksbaja - 5-4-2005 at 11:58 AM

Mucho celoso. Our hills a bit soggy as yet. One mo trip I hope before the sun sticks over BCS.

latitude26n - 5-4-2005 at 12:13 PM

Hate to rush the birthdays, but can't wait til Mr latitude26 is 49.5 y.o. so we can retire and get to "live" each day far away from Cali.

Cincodemayo - 5-4-2005 at 01:01 PM

How's Engineer Andy and Nurse Nelson??

greybaby - 5-4-2005 at 01:09 PM

Several years back we happened to be in Puebla during the month of May. Since this is where the battle was fought, this is where the holiday is really celebrated. They have a fair that lasts the whole month and it was wonderful!!! It was then I finally figured out the significance of the day. Enjoy.

latitude26n - 5-4-2005 at 01:14 PM

Cinco

I'll have senor latitude26 send a u2u-

you've probably figured out that the instigator of all this BB activity is senora (yuk, that sounds old) latitude.

Cincodemayo - 5-4-2005 at 01:27 PM

Muchas gracias senora...look forward to hearing from senor...
Dang I'd sure love a few Double Doubles and fries from IN-N-OUT...They are only as far north as Las Vegas. That's one of the only things I miss about So Cal and bodysurfin too...

Don't worry Cinco

jrbaja - 5-4-2005 at 09:28 PM

Cincodemayo - 5-5-2005 at 09:16 AM

Bruce....I grew up by the first IN-N-OUT near West Covina and have eaten them for Breakfast, lunch and dinner....sometimes in the same day. Still w/o a doubt the best burgers....ever ordered a 4X4 from them? I'd rather have 2 Double Doubles than a 4X4...

Authentic Mexican Feel

jrbaja - 5-5-2005 at 09:25 AM

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

But, in the small world dept.. Azusa avenue In n Out was my first experience as well. Relatives been there for many years and I grew up hiking San Gabriel Canyon! When not at Crescent Bay or surfing somewhere. Too funny.

cinco de mayo

mulege marv - 5-6-2005 at 07:25 AM

well here it is the day after in mulege it was very quite here last nite for a holiday, and everything was open. Bart's was serving a "cinco de mayo" dinner last nite and i dont think it was as crowded as his usual chile relleno nite, it was very good by the way . so much for what the book says, or maybe mulege didnt get their "Visions of Baja" calender and didnt know we were supposed to celebrate. i knew there was a reason i moved here !
