Cinco de Mayo in San Jose del Cabo
Anything going on for Cinco de Mayo in San Jose del Cabo this year? Or is it true that this holiday is only heavily celebrated in the states.
Cheers

The gringos will be celebrating
without knowing why, and the Mexicans won't as it's not particularly a major holiday here.

JR, Mexico will celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Because it falls on a Thursday not only will that day be a holiday but they will also get Friday off as well,
so this will be a four day holiday for all Mexican Citizens as well as this Gringo raising his glass in the direction of Puebla. It really is a major
holiday here in Mex.

I am sorry to disagree with the person with no name, but I have never seen much celebration here for Cinco de Mayo. I have a friend who says it was
dreamed up by the American greeting card industry. Americans wouldn t tolerate celebrating a holday in which they were defeated so defeating the
French at Puebla seemed like a great thing for Mexican Americans to celebrate.
As far as I know everything is open tomorrow here
Bryan, are you having a good time? Try Cactus Jacks or some place in town if you are looking to celebrate.

With all due respect,
but the person with no name is correct, it is a 4 day weekend, we have been planning on this since last year, same as we planed Easter when I had the
opportunity to meet with you Bruce in Mulege. While you are correct that there is no major celebration as in the USA, it still is a national holiday.
And the best part of all is that we will be attending the 50th aniversary celebration @ Disneyland, that happens to be on May 5. The kids are counting
down the hours. Here is the school calendar for May http://www.educacionbc.edu.mx/calendario/default.asp

areas no schools close for 5 De Mayo the schools here are closed Thursday Friday and Monday and Tuesday 6 day weekend but it has nothing to do with 5
De mayo

Bruce,
It is not a holiday like "St. Valentines Day" . Please check. You have the internet, look it up. IT IS NATIONAL HOLIDAY. If you look at Lencho's post
he even works for the Mexican Govt. and he gets the day off. My Son will not go to school tomorrow. Bruce please check your sources before you post
things you have no idea on what you are talking about!!!!!!

I just asked my neighbor (Mexican)
and he wasn't sure either. He thought that schools got the day off and wasn't sure of banks and businesses.
Sounds like something along the lines of Martin Luther King Day! Another good reason to not go to school.
10 years of living in Rosarito and the only people I ever saw celebrating 5 de Mayo was the gringos. It was a huge deal in the states though.
Another good reason to get drunk!

Dont be sorry Bruce, tomorrow as the Sun is coming up look towards Puebla and take a long hard swig on some really good Tequila (coffee in my case)
and give a little SALUD for those who lost there life on that day. War is pure hell, Ive been there and know first hand and days like tomorrow should
be remembered for what it is.
For those people in the U.S. who dont have a clue and will be trying to pick up a loose one at El Torrito and drink 2 for 1 margaritas have a great
day also.

Ok, here is how it works
In M?xico, same as in the US there are dates to celebrate, conmemorate or observed, celebraciones, conmemoraciones y dias de descanso obligatorio. In
this particular case, 5 de Mayo, we conmemorate the Batalla de Puebla, it is not "obligatorio" . Schools in M?xico take many days off, specialy basic
education, preescolar, primaria y secundaria, and May is one of the best months for that, specialy if May 1st is on a Monday like it will be in 2006.
May 1st, observed (Monday) so no school for 3 days, May 5, conmemorated (Friday) so no school for 3 days, May 10, celebrated as mothers day (Tuesday)
so yes school, but no classes and May 15, celebrated as teachers day (Monday) so again no school for 3 days.
Here are the only "observed" days according to the Ley Federal del Trabajo, Federal Labor Law
Art?culo 74. Son d?as de descanso obligatorio:
I. El 1o. de enero;
II. El 5 de febrero;
III. El 21 de marzo;
IV. El 1o. de mayo;
V. El 16 de septiembre;
VI. El 20 de noviembre;
VII.

I remember Cinco last year in Mulege. I kept waiting for the music and fiesta to start. Zip, nada. zero.
So that evening it was just me, the dog and Dick Dale on CD.

Well now....it's my B-Day so all the gringos will be celebrating as I will....A few years ago the wife and I flew down to Coronado Island and went to
OLD TOWN San Diego.
They closed off all the streets and it was a town party on Cinco...it was a hoot as the Mexican restaurant there was totally packed with partiers.
Don\'t get mad...
Get EVEN.

How could it not be a national holiday? Mayo is the most important food in Mexico. Nothing eatable is served without it being in it, or on it.
I will celebrate in the traditional way:
While facing north/east toward Chicago, eating a piece of Bimbo bread lathered with lots of mayonnaise and afterwards thrice repeating:
Viva Hellmann's!

Like Spring Break
there should be cinco de mayo "hot spots". Doubt you'll find any in Mexico though.
I would think that Old Town would be "the place" to be on that date!
Happy Birthday Cinco! Mines the 12th and I'll be in San Bartolo Bambooing
