Any one on here thinking of Brandt hunting this season in San Quintin?
I have several friends there who are licensed guides and I have a new black lab graduating this month from boot camp and if anyone is interested and
has a good dog or two I would like to perhaps hunt together and teach my dog some manners and that hunting from the boat thing.

Wanna go to work guys ?? yeh, yeh, yeh !!
capt. mike - 9-7-2005 at 06:45 AM
Don Jorge!! heck yeah, i have been inquiring about bird murder and the killing and eating of the lessor goose species for several years (24!) after
1st reading about it in one of the early Senterfitt baja guides. I asked Juanita Pertersen of Ceilito Lindo fame once and she said it used to be
popular but the tighter gun laws and fees closed most of it down, and the guides left.
i am a bird shooter taught the sport in Kansas as a youth and since moving to AZ have missed the ritual greatly, in fact have to fly back home about
every other year to commit sport against the pheasant population and get a "fix".
what are the rates, i last checked on forms and fees to bring in my own shootin' irons and WHOA!! so i guess have to use concessionaires equipment?
stay where? i can fly in to CL and meet.
i checked the rates for the duck compounds around La Press in Sonora and other lake "cast and blast" resorts and they are very pricey.
what can we do? i am "game" so to speak.
pls contact me. Fall waterfowl shootin' is a blast......NPI

Joelt..
Pompano - 9-7-2005 at 09:38 AM
they are heartbreakers for sure..
I've had labs and chessies all my life...with a sprinking of pointers and setters..a beagle..two cats...a yellow..a shorthair..well, a heck of a lot
of animals over the years.

Where to stay?
Don Eddie's, next to Old Mill, in SQ is known for catering to Brandt hunters. They can probably help with guide arrangements too.
capt. mike - 9-8-2005 at 06:10 AM
ok, all good - but what about specifics?????
shootin irons, rates etc??
just drop in and hope to rent guns, buy ammo and connect or??!!
i'd like to see some organized protocol
who knows the ins and outs?
Pompano - i'll meet you there.!!!
lets commit some legal murder.
Don Jorge - 9-8-2005 at 06:35 AM
I hear you Mike. Give me a couple of weeks to put some specifics together. My buddy Tiburon had a few too many Brandts in his bag last year but I'm
sure he's good to go. He knows the game.
I do not plan on bringing my iron down, way too much hassle.
He had Rem 870's last I heard. I am outta here today for a boat ride from Dana Point to Punta Colnett. Hopefully catch some fish. Back Sunday at the
Coral to leave the boat and home Monday.
Next week I will go to Ensenda and talk with SEMARNAP and get some beta.
How many can go? Capt, Jorge, Pompano, anyone else. And what days work for Pompano? He is coming from farthest.
I would like to set the dates up soon so I can schedule a Shasta shoot too. It sounds great too me, just give me some time to check it out.
here is a good source of info.

smoker!!
capt. mike - 9-20-2005 at 04:03 AM
great stuff Pompano - but Q still remains......when to go and how to arrange around SQ?
Don Jorge - 9-20-2005 at 12:27 PM
Although the exact dates of the 2005 season are hard to come by and I have not had time to visit SEMERNAP yet the general season runs from the third
week of October until the third week of February.
Birds begin arriving in October, best hunting is in December /January. I am hoping to set something up for mid December with Alberto Flores,
"Tiburon." I will be in San Quintin this weekend fishing and try to get some specific dates available, guns to be used, costs, etc.
Will let you know when I get back. I am in Costa Rica in January and the Dominican Republic in February so it has to be December for me. Who else
will this work for so I can have an idea of group size?
I go pick up my pup from boot camp next week and hope she lives up to her breeding! She's been gone 3 months and the yard sure looks good again!
Some brandts at San Quintin:
capt. mike - 9-20-2005 at 12:43 PM

i tried to decifer the scoop on FDT's post site but my Espaniol not good enough.
Bufeo - still watching this space? go with us, i can pick you up at Bufeo, hop to SQ
Thx Don Jorge - make it happen buddy, i can taste those Patos coming out of the smoker right now!!
Nice brandt flock, Don Jorge...
Pompano - 9-20-2005 at 12:44 PM
Up here the snows are getting bunched up for the trip..the speckles have already pretty much gone already. We will be intercepting them down on the
Saskatchewan River in western province and then in Montana/ND. Good luck on that Baja San Quentin hunt. I sure wish we could make all the hunts but
those brandt are too far too soon..if you have another lined up later on let us know. I will bring my chocolate. Keep 'em flying & Support DU.

Do they all have the same markings. I took this in San Ignacio and always wondered what it was. Hope you can see it!

I dont mind dead things, some things are better dead.
Thanks
Don Jorge - 9-21-2005 at 05:23 PM
My monies on the coot!
Bob and Susan - 9-21-2005 at 05:50 PM
I thought it was supposed to look like this
Before that, Bob y Susan...they look like this..
Pompano - 9-21-2005 at 08:38 PM
I am holding with my lifelong buddy, Randy, a Canada goose...and Bajajudy, that really was a common coot in your photo, which, while being very much a
camera ham and a great paddler, should not to be confused with a specklebelly, which is the best eating wild goose in the world. And on the other
hand the lowly coot is ... well..let's say epicurianally handicapped? (Now that's a 50 cent word!)

Bedman - 9-22-2005 at 12:50 AM
Wow Pompano, one Helluva shot with that Daisy Red Rider!!

UPDATE
Don Jorge - 10-11-2005 at 09:58 AM
Talked to guide and friend in San Quintin today and have previously spoken with Rolando @ Wlidlife Advisory Services: http://www.mexicoadvisoryservices.com/index.html
Concensus: Well it is mid October and UMA still has not issued any Brandt tags to anyone! Nor have season dates been established, just the promise
of a much shorter season.
When I know more I will post more. There are quail tags available for San Telmo hunting with Alfredo Meling. Might do that too.
Also no longer requiring police letters to get military gun permits and sounds like crossing the border with guns and ammo and proper permits has
gotten much easier.
bajajudy - 10-11-2005 at 11:53 AM
Nice looking dog.
Where y'all from.
Or is that baseball related.
Don Jorge - 10-11-2005 at 12:46 PM
Judy,
Dusty says thanks, she is a nice looking pup, birdiest dog I ever owned. We are ready for her first season!
We all from orangeless county in so cal. And, yes, it's a baseball thing.
capt. mike - 10-12-2005 at 06:56 PM
keep me / us posted....i want to commit bird genocide!!
UMA
Don Jorge - 10-28-2005 at 03:12 PM
Still has not issued tags for brandt hunting this season in San Quintin Bay. Still waiting to hear if and when.
There are problems which I have no doubt will be solved the old fashioned way soon.
Joaquin Suave - 10-28-2005 at 03:35 PM
Yo Jorge,
When I first read the post I though it said "bandit" hunting.
My first thought was...Cool! I guess that means I have hunting dogs too!
Cute pup! Hopefully I'll get to meet him soon!
Bandito
Don Jorge - 10-30-2005 at 04:02 PM
hunting dogs you have Jouquin! See you in January.
You guys know nothing beats a good dog for a good hunt...
Pompano - 10-30-2005 at 04:31 PM
That's my chocolate, Cheyenne..getting to be a big dog after her initial quail training in Baja and did well for me on sharptails and partridge.
Holds her point and let's me flush. Her buddy did an excellent job also for owner, Jim.
brant
tehag - 10-30-2005 at 06:36 PM
According to my field guide there is no D in brant.
I spelled it with a D for a long time, but I have reason to believe now that that has always been incorrect.
Judy has a photo of a coot.
capt. mike - 11-1-2005 at 05:26 AM
ja wohl! Herr Pompano, das ist richt.
A recipe for branDt
Don Jorge - 11-1-2005 at 08:06 PM
Pompano et all,
Years ago an Italian couple came into my farmstand and asked if I could harvest them some artichoke stalks. They did not want artichokes, they wanted
stalks and they were so cute I complied with their request, wondering what the heck they were going to do with those tough, stringy, sappy, prickly
stems.
I politely asked them why they wanted these things? They replied to eat.
Of course I asked how in the world could you possibbly prepare these to eat.
The answer, and it works on everything, branDt included:
Batter IT and Deep Fry It!
I sit corrected, they are brant geese, and i know they aren't Canadian either!
Jorge
