Best huevos rancheros

El Jefe - 10-8-2005 at 04:40 PM

One of our favorites is Nueva Chapala about 1 Km south of the turnoff to Coco's and Gonzaga on Hwy 1. The huevos rancheros is served on a crisp flour tortilla with a sauce that can't be beat. I have never had better, and I've had lots. We stop for huevos rancheros for breakfast or lunch. It's great! The truck stop ambiance is perfect and the laminated picture puzzles as art on the walls adds a great touch. Try it

When we were traveling around doing research for my husbands guide book, we made huevos rancheros the standard bearer for side of the road restaurants. The best I have ever had was at the Happy Shrimp in Lopez Mateos.

We eat them weekly at Rigo's here in San Jose. $30 not the best but pretty good and the cheapest you can find around here.

The worst I ever had was at Rossi's between La Paz and Cuidad Constitucion mainly because I got huevos Mexicanos instead.

If you order from a senora or senorita, always order huevo ranchero. Not huevos...or so I have been told.

One of the other standards is beans. If the frijoles are good usually the rest is also.

Provecho

We have enjoyed excellent huevos rancheros at International Rice and Beans. I order them with a side of some of the best chile rellenos you can get anywheres!

turtleandtoad - 10-9-2005 at 06:08 AM

Huevos Rancheros at a sidewalk table at the Ole Cafe in Loreto on a sunny Sunday morning while checking my e-mail (WiFi) and watching the cattleboat Canuks and Gringos rush around taking pictures and buying every trinket in sight.

Priceless!!!!

Yep Rice and beans is one of the best

We were just having a family discussion trying to recall a BAD order of huevos rancheros we have had in Baja. We are stumped. We have come to the conclusion that it's just that some are better then the others.

Keri, have you had the chile rellenos at Rice and Beans? Fabulous!

Uh oh, one more social faux pas to worry about.

Good thing we always get Huevos a la Mexicana!

Wait a minute. Don't tell me...

It's pretty hard to screw up standard Mexican fare if you use fresh ingredients. That's the key.

Mexican cooking, excluding complex sauces, isn't complicated. But even at it's best it's still average.

I've never had great huevos rancheros that I still wouldn't trade for average eggs Benedict.

That's quite a difference Dave

jrbaja - 10-9-2005 at 10:49 AM

But I think those muffins are hard to come by down here. Try huevos motule?os at La Fuente though. Pretty close.

You can buy 'em all day long at COSTCO. ;D

Or here's a thought:

You could make them!

[Edited on 10-9-2005 by Dave]

We get ours

jrbaja - 10-9-2005 at 11:55 AM

in the states. (I have a favorite kind) that costco doesn't carry. Besides, we hardly ever go to costco when Commercial is such a good store.;) Didja ever see the Mantequilla girl?

But I was referring to restaurants serving Eggs Benedict. Maybe Mallarimo and some of the ones in Rosarito but the restaurants we generally frequent, they are unheard of.

Carol said once that the restaurant next to the Pemex in San Ignacio had really good Huevos Rancheros. Not my thing. I like chiles rellenos!

turtleandtoad - 10-9-2005 at 12:22 PM

For something different in Chiles Rellanos, check out the restaurant at Riviera Del Mar RV Park in Loreto.

I liked the ones stuffed with tuna.

bajajudy - 10-9-2005 at 12:53 PM

The Tropicana in San Jose has a breakfast Chile Relleno which is like an inside out one. The eggs are on the inside of the chile and the cheese is on the outside, along with ranchero sauce.

The recipe is in Ann Hazard's new cookbook, "Cooking with Baja Magic Dos" which is available from our web site.

Provecho

Agree with both, but.....

I think I like the huevos rancheros even better at Paola's, across the street from the Loncheria. Although I must admit, I like the toasted tortilla base at L.L.M. But I like the ranchero sauce better at Paola's.

I am going to try and get the girls at Paola's to do a crispy tortilla base, next time I'm there.

Guess I'll try Magana's next......

rpleger - 10-10-2005 at 01:00 PM

Let us not forget Carmalitas, just south of Mulege.

The best

Keri - 10-10-2005 at 05:03 PM

Never tried paolas but I like Loncheria for the fried flour tort also. Try Magana's machacha it is the best I've ever had.k yummy:yes::yes::yes:

Keri

Hook - 10-17-2005 at 12:17 PM

How do you order your machaca at Magana's? Con Huevos or con verduras as largely a separate meat dish?

I like machaca con huevos but have had machaca with onions, tomatoes and peppers served separate from the eggs and I prefer this method.

Hook ,

Keri - 10-17-2005 at 01:25 PM

Me too, sin huevos. I usually get a machaca burrito. Great for breakfast. k:yes::yes::yes:

BornFisher - 10-17-2005 at 04:01 PM

Yeah El Jefe, I agree-- they are great there. Pretty cool place, plain and simple, makes Santa Inez seem like an IHOP. Buddy got two orders once-- we teased him he would be named "customer of the month" and have his pic posted on the wall.
BUT--- one more place that is delicious--- Anna Mar (about k-37). Served with potatos and beans, with a wonderful sauce . So good it can`t be eaten with a fork-- big spoon is mandatory (drinks are expersive though)!!

Ana Mar's also has the best clam chowder

Keri - 10-17-2005 at 04:52 PM

that I have tasted down here. We stop in all the time just for chowder for dinner. Try that next time your there:yes:. k

BornFisher - 10-17-2005 at 06:46 PM

Yeah Keri, I went for dinner, got a cup of chowder, loved it, went back for the bowl!!
But another great one-- from the lunch menu-- get the shrimp burritos!! Betcha can`t eat `em both!!

El Jefe - 10-17-2005 at 07:35 PM

Ana Mar...which KM 37??? sounds good

Marinero - 10-18-2005 at 04:15 PM

No Fair talking about all that good Mexican food when I am stuck up north for awhile longer.......Grrrrr!

Bill

Man, is this place good!

Hook - 11-15-2005 at 02:27 PM

Went by Loncheria Nuevo Chapala last week and the huevos rancheros are as good as advertised. The best I have ever had, too. Not for the faint of heart, though, as it is pretty spicey. Definitely a homemade sauce.

Probably wont ever pass this place w/o stopping.....:bounce:

rpleger - 11-15-2005 at 03:24 PM

?Where is Loncheria Nuevo Chapala?

?How far from Muleg

You'd have to hit it on the way down or back.

Hook - 11-15-2005 at 04:22 PM

Richard.

It's north of the BOLA turnoff and south of Catavina.

Who's got the best huevos in Mulege?

Not the biggest huevos.....the best.

bajajudy - 11-16-2005 at 07:24 AM

Lencho read again
I didnt order that. I ordered huevo ranchero that was what I got. And I dont even like that, so have never ordered it.

All I've ever had my whole life is....

Hook - 11-16-2005 at 05:21 PM

huevos americanos.

bajajudy - 11-16-2005 at 06:13 PM
