More Old Baja Photos (1972-1979)

David K - 10-27-2005 at 07:46 AM

I went through my album and pulled some more photos and scanned them last night to share with you all...

This one was taken in Oct. 1972 on our first trip up the new road to the San Pedro Martir observatory.... If you can make it out, Diablo mountain is just right of me (I was 15) up in the pine forest of Baja.

David K - 10-27-2005 at 07:50 AM

In July, 1973 we were under the impression that the Baja highway was almost completed... So, without hesitation, my dad used his new 2WD Ford LTD station wagon for our summer trip.

Here we are in the Laguna Chapala valley... with its infamous dust bowl (moon dust, Baja dust, talc powder)!
I am taking the photo on the roadbed for the new highway and my dad is on the detour road because a bridge is not yet built...

David K - 10-27-2005 at 07:51 AM

Back up on the new highway roadbed, Laguna Chapala valley, headed south for Loreto... July 1, 1973

David K - 10-27-2005 at 07:53 AM

I congratulate my dad on getting us through the dust bowl of Chapala! (I am wearing a Dick Cepek Baja Proven shirt, 30 years later I met the cartoonist who created Dick's logo, Dave Deal)

David K - 10-27-2005 at 07:54 AM

My mom at the view point south of Chapala...

David K - 10-27-2005 at 07:55 AM

Juncalito's Ramon Villalejo and his father... That is salted shark meat drying on the lines... July, 1973

David K - 10-27-2005 at 07:56 AM

Beautiful sunrise against the Sierra Gigante, from Juncalito... We went fishing with Ramon that day.

David K - 10-27-2005 at 07:58 AM

Mision San Fernando in 1974... I camped there with a friend on my first trip without parents... It was Easter Vacation and I was 16...

David K - 10-27-2005 at 08:01 AM

Just to show the difference, here is Jack Swords' photo 26 year later of the same mission:

Here's a photo of the other side of the mission, in '74

Camping across from San Fernando mission

David K - 10-27-2005 at 08:04 AM

Easter vacation in 1975 had me doing a repeat trip with another school friend, Mike Clancy, and two other vehicles joined us (Ford 4WD truck and a Baja Bug)... we went to El Marmol, La Turquesa canyon, Gonzaga, and San Felipe making a big loop trip...

Thanks for sharing.
Sometime I need to go through my dad's old slides (He has tons going back to the 40's and maybe earlier) and see if I can scan them.

As some are unlabeled, we could play "Where is (was) this?"

David K - 10-27-2005 at 08:07 AM

In Oct. 1979, I preran the Baja 1000 course with my Subaru, over the first section I was going to be driving in the race (San Matias Pass to San Felipe, to Gonzaga, to El Crucero on Mex. 1). Here is my Subaru 4WD in Calamajue canyon...

David K - 10-27-2005 at 08:09 AM

Okay, the final photo from this series... My good old 4WD Subaru on the Baja 1000 race course between Calamajue and El Crucero... Great Baja flora for the background!

Hope you guys like this stuff...

So cool David! Ramons' fathers' name was Cruz,BTW,as my Dad and I were just talking about him the other day.He was very old when I met him and passed away a few years after. His wife, Elotia, had fifteen children with him (Ramon) and survived several years after the passing of Cruz. WOW!:O

David K - 10-27-2005 at 09:04 PM

I am glad you saw the photo Sally! I was thinking of you when I dug it out of my album!

You recall that I put a photo of my mom and Ramon on the cover of my '75 Baja Roadguide...

David...

David. Sometimes you need to edit old photos.

David K - 11-6-2005 at 04:32 PM

Thanks Robert... it is hard for me to believe that I have a daughter the same age as I was in this photo... and a son a year older!

Sallysouth - 11-8-2005 at 04:04 PM

Yes David, I remember the picture on the cover of your roadguide! I have to get my Dad over here to see that pic of Ramon and Cruz, he will get a thrill! Thanks for thinking of me!! Saludos, Sally

bajajudy - 11-8-2005 at 04:36 PM

David
You sure were lucky, just like Alex, to have had parents that took you to such a special place.
We went to Myrtle Beach, which seemed special at the time but hardly does now.
Thanks for sharing

David K - 11-8-2005 at 04:37 PM

Sally and Judy... you're both very welcome!

Sallysouth - 11-8-2005 at 05:35 PM

David, Do you have any more pics of Juncalito or Ramons' family during that era?

David K - 11-8-2005 at 07:30 PM

I may have another of Ramon operating his panga, taking us fishing... if/when I find it, I will post it here...

The Torres family is related to Ramons(RIP)family by marriage. Jose Torres married into the Villalegos(Ramons).
