Hogfish

Skipjack Joe - 1-6-2006 at 05:49 PM

Hogfish. It is a wrasse. It's closely related to a parrotfish. It's also closely related to our southern california sheephead.

Looks kinda like a gal I met some time ago...

Mexray - 1-7-2006 at 12:51 AM

...at quitin' time in a saloon after a night of tossin' a few...she even had one of those nasty looking 'whiskers' over her lip!...

Diver - 1-7-2006 at 04:25 AM

She's my seeester !

HotSchott - 1-8-2006 at 09:36 AM

It is a Bodianus something. It looks like the Spanish Hogfish (Bodianus Rufus) in my field guide. The big ones are a delicacy in Belize and get fished out.

Parrotfish all have beaks instead of teeth and won't take bait - gotta stick 'em. Hogfish will take your fingertip like a pargo if you aren't careful pulling your hook!

Teenager

djh - 1-8-2006 at 09:57 AM

Looks like a teenage fish to me.... Boy, I bet her mom is gonna be ticked when she gets home with that pierced lip!

You really should be hanging around with older girls ! ! !

A long time ago - live and learn - I speared my first big hogfish thninking it was some kind of sheephead. - After I tossed it into my inflatable it let off the mucous that they wrap themselves in at night, and it was the most foul stench I have ever smelled - we had to pull into a cove and triy to wash the boat down, but we had to breathe through snorkles on the way back. The boat was uninhabitable for 3 days! I never did spear or eat one after that.

Parrotfish will eat sticky rice on a hook.

Strange? Maybe that smell has something to do with mating or defense. The one shown smellled fin:lol:, inside and out.

Diver - 1-8-2006 at 06:59 PM

We used to spear Hogfish in south Florida and I don't recall any smell either ?? I remember the light tasting white meat with a nice medium texture. Oh man, get me some breadcrumbs, butter, garlic and a lemon !!

I still think this one is my seeester but it also looks a lot like the spanish hogs we saw in Florida, only larger than most. The yellow color is more pronounced in the water when alive. They're better eating when they're this big or bigger.

bajarich - 1-8-2006 at 09:12 PM

Definitly a Mexican Hogfish. I have caught many, and they are definitly good eating.

Skipjack Joe - 1-8-2006 at 10:04 PM

Soweee! It came right up to the boat.

Sharksbaja - 1-8-2006 at 11:16 PM

Yep, the males have a hump on their forehead like the sheepshead.
Speared (bigones)of the red variety times many as a youth in P.V.

thanks, alot of responses, kinda funny, but it gave me an ideao of what it is, I couldnt help but notice as going thru the gallery many of your other photos.. They are good, are you a photographer? If not you do a great job...

Thanx Sunshine

Sharksbaja - 1-12-2006 at 05:54 PM

No, not a photographer but I do my best:D My stuff is ok but personally I think I am better with film. All my forum posts have been with a digital. Baja is very photographic with the lack of smog, haze and lights. Good clean colors. Plus it's very easy to take a photo and have no signs of civilization in sight.
