Hogfish
Hogfish. It is a wrasse. It's closely related to a parrotfish. It's also closely related to our southern california sheephead.

Looks kinda like a gal I met some time ago...
...at quitin' time in a saloon after a night of tossin' a few...she even had one of those nasty looking 'whiskers' over her lip!...

It is a Bodianus something. It looks like the Spanish Hogfish (Bodianus Rufus) in my field guide. The big ones are a delicacy in Belize and get
fished out.
Parrotfish all have beaks instead of teeth and won't take bait - gotta stick 'em. Hogfish will take your fingertip like a pargo if you aren't careful
pulling your hook!

A long time ago - live and learn - I speared my first big hogfish thninking it was some kind of sheephead. - After I tossed it into my inflatable it
let off the mucous that they wrap themselves in at night, and it was the most foul stench I have ever smelled - we had to pull into a cove and triy
to wash the boat down, but we had to breathe through snorkles on the way back. The boat was uninhabitable for 3 days! I never did spear or eat one
after that.

Parrotfish will eat sticky rice on a hook.

Strange? Maybe that smell has something to do with mating or defense. The one shown smellled fin, inside and out.

We used to spear Hogfish in south Florida and I don't recall any smell either ?? I remember the light tasting white meat with a nice medium texture.
Oh man, get me some breadcrumbs, butter, garlic and a lemon !!
I still think this one is my seeester but it also looks a lot like the spanish hogs we saw in Florida, only larger than most. The yellow color is more
pronounced in the water when alive. They're better eating when they're this big or bigger.
