BAJACAT - 2-2-2006 at 10:46 PM

Whats your fav. mission nomads, it's hard to deside but has to be one that blows you away, so far my fav. mission is SAN JAVIER, coming down the side of the road and have a glance of the top of the church sticking out of the top of the palm trees did't for me..

San Javier

The Jesuit's final mission in New Spain before being removed by royal decree...

My favorite because of the location... one of Baja's special places... enchanting!

Los Dolores Mission

Jack Swords - 2-5-2006 at 08:14 AM

Nuestra Se?ora de los Dolores del Sur mission founded in 1721 has an interesting history. Its location makes it very difficult to get to and a great adventure. I agree with David that the ruins of Santa Maria de Los Angeles (1767) are enchanting and special, but Los Dolores is equally so. For me it is a tossup!

Well, if we're doing out-of-country, how about Panama Viejo. Oldest mission in the western world was established in 1519.

San Borja is definately my favorite mission, especially to take newbies to as it is a wonderful place to camp under the palapas, plus bathing in the hot springs by candelight at night is very romantic, plus the huge mango tree and gardens are delightful as is Jose Gerardo and his family that lives there (Noni the youngest daughter is quick to hit you up for candy) His sons can take you horseback riding or show you the unique little cave paintings there too. It has a little bit of everything and is very beautiful, peaceful and interesting...plus the drive through the serio cactus forest in one of the most scenic desert drives in all of Baja.

Bajaboy - 6-23-2006 at 07:01 PM

Santa Gertrudis is wonderful...lots of cool artifacts inside.

Santa Gertrudis

David K - 6-24-2006 at 06:01 PM

Great photos Judy... The bell tower is the only one in Baja detached from the church. One of the bells has the name of the next mission that was to be founded (but never was): Santa Maria Magdalena... ruins of the attempted site were possibly found in 1966.

Here's a photo of the Santa Gertrudis mission church taken December 31, 2001...

there is only one true mission............

capt. mike - 6-25-2006 at 06:40 AM

Jake and Elwood's "mission from God"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the rest of these missions are boring me to pieces, reverred by pojama people.

David K - 6-25-2006 at 09:51 AM

Capt., is that from the Blues Brothers?

Paula - 6-25-2006 at 10:31 AM

pojama people.....

pura zappa!

capt. mike - 6-25-2006 at 11:04 AM

;) - yes! :light: Jake and Elwood Blues........on a mission from God :saint:

sorry.....i can only take so much of these "missionary positions" here.

but for those who like the historical razz a ma tazz, go for it.

for me, seen one and think i've seen 'em all!

Paula - 6-25-2006 at 11:12 AM

Missions, shrines and little churches-- seems you love them or you don't, and there isn't much middle ground.

No two are alike, so I hope to see all of them sooner or later.

David K - 6-25-2006 at 07:40 PM

Yes, Paula is correct as many are disappearing in our lifetimes!

All the adobe ruins are melting away without rain protection! San Fernando is almost gone compared to what I saw in 1974 on my first visit to it... Santo Tomas as well...

I have several old photos to compare to the latest ones so you can see the rate of distruction... at http://vivabaja.com/bajamissions

I agree Paula that's my goal right know, to see or try to see all the missions including the sites.even do I think San Pedro Martir is going to be impossible.. >>;)))*>

Neal Johns - 6-30-2006 at 08:34 AM

I gotta vote for Mision Santa Maria first and San Borja second.

Santa Maria is a treat in solitude and wild beauty and San Borja is the center of some great four wheel exploring. Get Jose's help (house next to the Mission) if you don't don't want to explore alone. Very nice family.
Go to nearby picto site Las Tinajitas, old Rancho San Gregorio up a canyon several miles south, hike or mule ride the El Camino Real, whatever your interests are Jose and family can help you. Not much english spoken.

SiReNiTa - 6-30-2006 at 03:15 PM

i like san borja alot, it is really pretty and it has hot springs, a small museum inside, and best of all the people there are soonice and very helpfull, also there are cave paintings up in the sierra and sometimes you can see borrego simarron up in the hills...but then again i love the bell tower at santa gertrudis it is also very beautiful but anyway san borja is my all time favorite but i like all missions because of they're history and greatness...

BAJACAT - 7-3-2006 at 09:53 AM

Actually Neal one of Jose's sons ( Genaro ). wich was our guide on our last april trip to S Borja, he speaks enough english to keep a good conversation he took us to see las tinajitas the hot springs and the mission..
