The Jesuit's final mission in New Spain before being removed by royal decree...

My favorite because of the location... one of Baja's special places... enchanting!

Los Dolores Mission

Nuestra Se?ora de los Dolores del Sur mission founded in 1721 has an interesting history. Its location makes it very difficult to get to and a great adventure. I agree with David that the ruins of Santa Maria de Los Angeles (1767) are enchanting and special, but Los Dolores is equally so. For me it is a tossup!

Well, if we're doing out-of-country, how about Panama Viejo. Oldest mission in the western world was established in 1519.

San Borja is definately my favorite mission, especially to take newbies to as it is a wonderful place to camp under the palapas, plus bathing in the hot springs by candelight at night is very romantic, plus the huge mango tree and gardens are delightful as is Jose Gerardo and his family that lives there (Noni the youngest daughter is quick to hit you up for candy) His sons can take you horseback riding or show you the unique little cave paintings there too. It has a little bit of everything and is very beautiful, peaceful and interesting...plus the drive through the serio cactus forest in one of the most scenic desert drives in all of Baja.
