Punta Baja

El Almirante - 2-14-2006 at 08:26 AM

In our planning meeting last weekend for our annual trek to Baja the subject of where to camp on our way back from BOLA came up. Since we usually camp north of La Gringa, and are fully self contained, it takes us until noon to take the camp down and get packed up. Then into town for a last meal, and on the road. So we camp at Catavina, usually arriving in the late afternoon. This year we will be staying at Gecko, so we figure to be on the road much earlier. So we were thinking of getting farther north and camping at Punta Baja. Any comments or suggestions on the road to Punta Baja (we will have an 18' boat) or the camping there? Thanks.

there is another area north of Punta Baja

where the river that flows near El Rosario empties into the Pacific

is that road any better, it looks shorter?

Punta Baja is served by a good graded road (boats are hauled over it)...

La Bocana (the beach west of El Rosario) is a nicer place to camp, as Punta Baja is a small village... but not boat launching like at Pta. Baja.

La Bocana can be reached in 2WD if you stay to the right going from the sharp curve by Mama Espinoza's, and right again at the fork a hundred feet west (left goes across the river to El Rosario de Abajo and Punta Baja).
The right branch heads up into the hills through the dump and about where you see the gaurded gate for Diamante del Mar, you take the left road that drops back down to the river valley and on to the beach (which you can see in the distance).

A 4WD road to La Bocana goes from the Punta Baja road just past El Rosario de Abajo...

Go to the Baja Nomad Trip Reports forum and get more details on the Punta Baja area from my report of last December... La Bocana report was from last May...
