Pangas, who builds them in the baja?

rocknrog - 7-18-2006 at 03:23 AM

I live in loreto, and I am thinking about buying a new boat. Where in the baja or on the mainland do they build pangas,? and any opinions on what panga is the best for the money.

ncampion - 7-18-2006 at 06:52 AM

Years ago many of them were built in La Paz, by a guy named Mac Sawyer(not sure of the spelling). He was an American, Mexican citizen who had a big factory there. I was sailing a cruising boat at the time, met him and had him build me a dingy (mini panga). Not sure if the company still exists - this was 20 years ago.

Van Diaz pangas

capitolkat - 7-18-2006 at 07:28 AM

go down to the fishing and hunting section and look up the section on the Van Diaz pangas in Los Barrilles-- good luck

BajaRob - 7-18-2006 at 07:28 AM

Mac Shroyer developed the Super Panga and built hundreds of them. The boats are much safer than previous designs and have saved countless lives. The business folded after the Mexican Navy commissioned two large boats for which they failed to pay. Mac built several homes in La Paz and he and his wife Mary built and operated Marina de La Paz for many years. Last I heard, their son Neil was managing the marina. I based my Tayana 52, Windstalker there in the late 80's and early 90's and it was a first class operation.

Here's a link with pics and contact info for the Van-Diaz factory. They are the only panga builders I know of in Baja Sur; but most of the Loreto pangas come from the mainland and are less expensive. Almost any pangero down at the marina can give you info to contact the mainland people.

In Loreto

capn.sharky - 7-18-2006 at 07:51 AM

My best friend, Francisco Vega builds pangas and superpangas right there in Loreto. He is at 136 11 77. He will build it the way you want it. Many guides and commercial pangeros use him. He will stand behind his work. Tell him Chayo sent you---or Sharky. His shop is in Col. Zaragosa. Why give your money to another town. He also does repairs, painting and re gelcoating. Give him a shot....he's been doing this for over twenty years.;)

Thanks Sharky.

I had heard that someone was making pangas in Loreto, then someone told me no, not in Loreto...

I really like the Diaz boats, but they are more of a "gringo-ized" and more expensive boat so I haven't decided yet...

capn.sharky - 7-18-2006 at 10:49 PM

I checked out the Diaz site---and they are a nice panga. They should be for the money. A basic 25 Superpanga from Francisco is around $5500 and is well built and strong. Many of the locals are using them. Check with Momo about Pancho's quality. As you know, Momo's motor shop is in front of the Capatania del Puerto's office by the marina in Loreto. Pancho's shop is in Col. Zaragosa at the top of the soccer field. I think you will be pleased with what you see. Again, I always spend my money in Loreto---if I can. Pancho ran a fishing fleet out of San Blas, Nayarite for years and has been building pangas for many, many years now.

Capt Sharky
I'm the one that has the 1984 Diaz panga in Fresno. Im planning on moving to Mulege and I would like some changes/repairs made to the boat.
It sounds like your friend is the ideal guy to do the work
Like you, Id rather keep the business as local as possible.
Does your friend by chance correspond e-mail wise???
Thanks for your tip..I think it solved a lot of my concerns.

Paladin, Paladin, where do you roam? Have gun will travel. You can call him from the U.S. fairly cheap....use 011 52 613 135 11 77. He did some extensive repairs for a chap from Mulege named David that ran a dive service there. The boat had blown up in the harbor killing the owner. David bought it off the Mexican skipper that was with the guy when this disaster struck. I couldn't believe how good it turned out---having seen the amount of damage done to the boat.

Bob and Susan - 7-19-2006 at 01:07 PM

that's funny david told me "he" did ALL the repairs himself:lol:

Paladin - 7-19-2006 at 01:18 PM

Sharkey
You showed your age when you said "Have Gun, Will Travel"
Great TV program from 1958 to 1962 I think
Richard Boone was one ugly guy huh?

I picked up the name Paladin when I set up a sort of business (monkey) helping ranchers in Central Calif with their squirrel problem...hobby really...Paladin Rodent Control...The Ranchers Best Friend....Licensed, Insured and EPA Approved.

Thanks again for info

There is another response to Paladin other than "Have Gun, Will Travel"? Wasn't there a picture of a chess Rook on his "business card"?

That boat rocks! I'd love to be the first person to get the decks bloody!!

Is that a live bait well under the rear bench seat?

gnukid - 8-8-2006 at 12:22 PM

I live in La Paz and would like to buy a new panga built like the one shown here. A few questions, if you don;'t mind helping out a fellow fisherman in need:

I live a few doors from Marina La Paz and yes we have many pangas in the area but I don't know who would be trustworthy to build mine. Three or four builders exist. If I went with the builder in Barriles...

Did you order it? Did they build it custom? Do thye stock them? whats's the timeline and process? approximate cost? for this baby?

How about the motor and trailer? where did you get them and which did you choose?

Your help will be very much appreciated, I could call or write privately if you prefer. It's getting down to the wire and I would like to make this happen for the best price and best quality now.

Thanks and yes la jaunita II esta muy bonita!

en la paz

bajajudy - 8-8-2006 at 12:41 PM

Gnu
Have you been to the Marina and asked around? That is where I would start.

I am going to guess the the live bait well is not under that seat, but somewhere on the stern that doesnt show up in the pix.

pangas

jimgrms - 8-8-2006 at 02:07 PM

panga marine in florida make a really nice panga but a 18 ft hull only is right at 9 grand and 20 complete w a 90 4stroke so the ones built in baja are less money

Skeet/Loreto - 8-8-2006 at 02:27 PM

Capt. sharky is Right On about the fellow building and Repairing Pangas in Loreto!
Another way to go might be finding a used Original built by Mac Shroyer and have it reworked to fit your needs, depends on the Size Panga you would like.
Mac built the "La Patricia'' for me in 1976 which I fished for 27 years out of Loreto. It had a center Live Bait Tank.I used a Homelite 55, Evinrude 55, Evinrude 70 and found it to be a very Seaworthy Panga. The first Diaz Pangas coming out of La Paz with the Heavy metal Sombro's were a little top Heavy{Corrected in the Later Models}. Bill Riffe who lives in the "Round House next to the Capitain's Office may still have his in the Yard.
Look around and use the guy in Loreto!

I spend many days on pangas and end every day in MLP so I know the Shroyer's etc... and know every small shop panga maker in la paz and have well studied the styles and forms. Si puedo hablar espagnol un pocoi y tengo muchos amigos en las marinas, ellos dice nque estan differencias de las pangas. I really am wondering about specifics about the makers in barriles, costs, process, what differences can be noted in hull shape and finish etc... la juanita II looks great.

It doesn't help that the shroyers used to make pangas. I don't want to refit an old panga beacuase i like light weight well built new stuff.

I understand that going to some makers such as Jorge Aboroa might take a long time and if your lucky it will be sorta close to what you want.

So what is the price of the barriles makers model and what can be said about delivery time, models, styles, fittings? Which motor did you choose and why? Who made the trailer?

Your help is really appreciated as this is my dream to have a useable panga to leave the MLP and visit the islands each day. Gracias amigos, Pablo

I have a 1989 Arkansa Taveler 19 Ft/8 Ft Beam with an 175 Omc{302 Ford} in excellent Shape. This boat weights 3,000 Lbs. has 36 Gal Fuel Tanks can Fish 4 people easy, can do overnight Cruising with two people as it has folddown Seats all for $6000.
And if you really wanted to Cruise it could be outfitted with a Yannmar Diesel for about $15,000.
for $21,000 you could have a Very comfortable Boat to Cruise the Sea of Cortez/ or Trailer North to Loreto and Cruise back to La Paz for the Best fishing in Baja!!!

I'm interested in a 23-25' panga and an outboard since that will light weight and flexible.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Oh here is a photo from a recent trip just off Isla San Jose, that's me, Pablo on the right learning to fish for dorado with Jessica and Kevin.

Good fish!! What did the heads measure?
My wife has me beat with a head measure of 18 Inches. The 55 Lbder I caught off of Del Elfonso only measured out at 16 I/2 Inches.
What time of year? Have you ever gone up to Las Animas for Tuna?
