Pangas, who builds them in the baja?

I live in loreto, and I am thinking about buying a new boat. Where in the baja or on the mainland do they build pangas,? and any opinions on what panga is the best for the money.

Years ago many of them were built in La Paz, by a guy named Mac Sawyer(not sure of the spelling). He was an American, Mexican citizen who had a big factory there. I was sailing a cruising boat at the time, met him and had him build me a dingy (mini panga). Not sure if the company still exists - this was 20 years ago.

Mac Shroyer developed the Super Panga and built hundreds of them. The boats are much safer than previous designs and have saved countless lives. The business folded after the Mexican Navy commissioned two large boats for which they failed to pay. Mac built several homes in La Paz and he and his wife Mary built and operated Marina de La Paz for many years. Last I heard, their son Neil was managing the marina. I based my Tayana 52, Windstalker there in the late 80's and early 90's and it was a first class operation.

Here's a link with pics and contact info for the Van-Diaz factory. They are the only panga builders I know of in Baja Sur; but most of the Loreto pangas come from the mainland and are less expensive. Almost any pangero down at the marina can give you info to contact the mainland people.

In Loreto

My best friend, Francisco Vega builds pangas and superpangas right there in Loreto. He is at 136 11 77. He will build it the way you want it. Many guides and commercial pangeros use him. He will stand behind his work. Tell him Chayo sent you---or Sharky. His shop is in Col. Zaragosa. Why give your money to another town. He also does repairs, painting and re gelcoating. Give him a shot....he's been doing this for over twenty years.;)

Thanks Sharky.

I had heard that someone was making pangas in Loreto, then someone told me no, not in Loreto...

I really like the Diaz boats, but they are more of a "gringo-ized" and more expensive boat so I haven't decided yet...

I checked out the Diaz site---and they are a nice panga. They should be for the money. A basic 25 Superpanga from Francisco is around $5500 and is well built and strong. Many of the locals are using them. Check with Momo about Pancho's quality. As you know, Momo's motor shop is in front of the Capatania del Puerto's office by the marina in Loreto. Pancho's shop is in Col. Zaragosa at the top of the soccer field. I think you will be pleased with what you see. Again, I always spend my money in Loreto---if I can. Pancho ran a fishing fleet out of San Blas, Nayarite for years and has been building pangas for many, many years now.

Capt Sharky
I'm the one that has the 1984 Diaz panga in Fresno. Im planning on moving to Mulege and I would like some changes/repairs made to the boat.
It sounds like your friend is the ideal guy to do the work
Like you, Id rather keep the business as local as possible.
Does your friend by chance correspond e-mail wise???
Thanks for your tip..I think it solved a lot of my concerns.

Paladin, Paladin, where do you roam? Have gun will travel. You can call him from the U.S. fairly cheap....use 011 52 613 135 11 77. He did some extensive repairs for a chap from Mulege named David that ran a dive service there. The boat had blown up in the harbor killing the owner. David bought it off the Mexican skipper that was with the guy when this disaster struck. I couldn't believe how good it turned out---having seen the amount of damage done to the boat.

There is another response to Paladin other than "Have Gun, Will Travel"? Wasn't there a picture of a chess Rook on his "business card"?

That boat rocks! I'd love to be the first person to get the decks bloody!!

Is that a live bait well under the rear bench seat?
