BOLA for the 1000?

surfer jim - 10-18-2006 at 07:51 AM

Who will be going there to watch the race?

If not there where will YOU be?

I'm not sure what I will be doing yet......

[Edited on 10-18-2006 by surfer jim]

David K - 10-18-2006 at 08:15 AM

Somewhere south of San Felipe for me if I can get away that week... Perhaps at the sulfur mine?

I know some Nomads helping pit at Bahia de los Angeles... I imagine it will be very 'busy' there!

I am also waiting to hear back from The Squarecircle who may get assigned to run a radio relay further south... and we may be helping him again, like at the 500... for Baja Pits.

bajalou - 10-18-2006 at 08:16 AM

I'm thinking the sulphur mine area ought to be a good spot -

David K - 10-18-2006 at 08:31 AM

Yep, I watched the '03 San Felipe 250 at the sulfur mine and the '75 Baja 1000 there as well...

1975 was Score's first Baja 1000, it was a big loop starting and ending in Ensenada. Class 7 mini trucks came through the sulfur mine first which was odd until we later learned a last minute change allowed classes 6, 7 and 11 to bypass the Seven Sisters section and run the highway from Cataviña to El Crucero/ Calamajue jcn. then head north. The rest ran to the Pacific to just south of Punta Prieta then turned north.

1976 and 1977 were renamed Baja 1000 Km. (closer to 700 miles long) and stayed in the high country between Ensenada and Mexicali. The 1978 race was the first to go down Valle Chico and out via Matomi Canyon, then back north to San Felipe and Ensenada. I ran a pit at Borrego Wash off Hwy. 3 that year for Los Campeones.

1979 was Score's first Baja 1000 run to La Paz (the first La Paz run since 1973) and was the race I was a co-driver in... what fun! (even though we broke early)...

Geronimo - 10-18-2006 at 08:46 AM

Looks like COCOs for me, pitting the Chase 1 car. No Fundage to go futher south.

Al G - 10-18-2006 at 08:48 AM

DK...You are Baja's #1 information center...Thanks

capt. mike - 10-18-2006 at 09:13 AM

gonzaga thurs day, then lopez mateo for nite action, then serenidad fri-sat for the victory party for DP racing. And Ragland if they win too.

rts551 - 10-18-2006 at 09:36 AM

Will be in the san Ignacio area (its closer to my abreojos home). Any others in that area? Don't know exactly where yet...probably west of town.

tunaeater - 10-18-2006 at 09:47 AM

I'll be down south of San Felipe probably the sulfer mine as well. Leaving El Centro 6:00am Thursday morning and heading to my Dads K43 then to the course. Fully loaded with ice chest, chairs and shade

TMW - 10-18-2006 at 06:05 PM

I'll be south of Cocos this Friday to check out a watch location. Before El Curcero about 9 miles are a set of rollers after you come out of the wash from the Calamajue mission site. I always thought that would be a great place for some race watching. I expect some good jumps. But I'm checking to see if the 5 mile road splitting to the north goes to hwy1 is good for a 4x4. I don't want to get stuck back there. After the fast cars and trucks go thru we're going further south. After the check point closes for the new section at Loreto we're going to sweep it.

While I'm in the area I hope to also check out the short cut road that goes from hwy1 to San Antonio that David K told me about.

David K - 10-18-2006 at 06:42 PM

TW, on the 'Baja Locations from Space' thread, here on Nomad... I have a close up of all the roads you mention at Hwy. 1, including:

The water truck short cut to Calamajue made during the construction of Hwy. 1.

The original San Antonio road one km. from the above road.

El Crucero

The old L.A. Bay via Desengaño road/ Rancho San Luis rd. jcn.

and just south of that a stones throw...

The short cut to San Antonio road, not on any map...

The paved L.A. Bay jcn.

San Antonio Shortcut LINK

David K - 10-18-2006 at 07:32 PM

Tom, here's the link to Google sat image...

San Antonio Shortcut & Old L.A. Bay Road at Hwy. 1

First click on where it says 'Link to this page', to make the map full size.... then...

You can zoom in or out and scroll to follow roads... Hwy. 1 goes down the center... The old L.A. Bay road is near the top going east, the San Antonio shortcut is near the bottom going west... the old Baja main road parallels Hwy. 1 a 1/4 mile to the west.

The shortcut road is just over 3/10 a mile south of the old L.A. Bay road... which is/was Km. marker 270.

It is going to get dark early for the cars this year....

Okay, I just finished meeting with Carlos of Baja Pits, and we will be at EL CRUCERO!

Baja Angel, The Squarecircle and I will be doing the communications (Sat. phones) for Baja Pits, El Crucero.

http://www.bajapits.com

We look forward to seeing Kris (La Tijereta), TW, Surfer Jim and any other Nomads at the Baja Pits pit stop next to the junk car at El Crucero!

Join us, help us spot racers, and have fun in between!

See you there!

Ken Cooke - 10-21-2006 at 10:07 AM

I take it the 1000 will travel from LA Bay to Animas Bay? If this is so, how will they get there precisely? Run along the beach? I cannot open the Score-International .pdf file, so I just wanted to know...

David K - 10-21-2006 at 10:56 AM

Ken, they will be using the main road south to the San Francisquito/El Arco road (only going past the turnoff to Las Animas). The only beach they will be close to for about a mile is at Bahia San Rafael (Pancho's Place)...

See the SCORE map on the Off Road Expo pictures I posted here on Nomad... I believe you linked those photos on your Jeep blog page?

The mountain prevents any vehicle from staying next to the coast south of L.A. Bay.

I looked the map over a 2nd time, and yes, the mountain (also shown in the Baja Almanac) keeps the racers from traveling along the beach. Thanks for the extra info... :light:

BOLA , for the 1000 is a good spot, once while passing thru we sat a had tacos and refrescos with a crew of racer types, whom I normaly shy away from, and we had a great time and learned some of the finer details of off road racing. Wish I could join ya', wherever you go have fun!

TMW - 10-23-2006 at 07:22 AM

Returned last night from my quick Baja scouting trip. I'll post a trip report later. It was interesting with a dark twist I'd never experienced before in Baja. The area I'll be to watch the race will be about 9 miles before El Crucero. There's a couple of small hills that should make for some good bike and car/truck action. It's 5.5 miles from hwy 1 at KM271 on a good dirt road. Anyone coming in on the road there is a split to the right at about 4 miles that also connects to the race course. I didn't go down it but it's in the almanac and it looked like it had been used when I went by.

Also found the short cut road (second road to San Antonio) from hwy1 between KM270 and KM271. At 9.5 miles in ( 29-11-44x114-16-53, 1705ft) it connects to the regular road out to hwy1 at KM252. At this jct of the two dirt roads you can see a new house being built on the side of the mountain to the NE. Another 1.5 miles there's a ranch on the left and at 12 miles is San Antonio.

David K - 10-23-2006 at 10:05 AM

Good Job TW!

We hope to see you at El Crucero! Come on down after all the big guys pass by... We have 4 Class 11s and those Rhinos to pit 4 in addition to all the others (including 4 trophy trucks), so we will be there until Friday midday, I imagine.

TMW - 10-23-2006 at 12:28 PM

David U2U or email me your radio frequency and the Trophy Truck and class 1 numbers and I'll give you a heads up when they go by. After most of the fast cars go by we'll leave for your pit.

??

LaTijereta - 10-23-2006 at 02:34 PM

TW,
If El Crucero is at rm 320 +/-, how can the hill you mention be at rm 221 (per your earlier post)? It must be further north?
I remember an access road that north of El Crucero that sounds like the one you decscibed at km 251. Only 5.5 miles sounds close enough to the hwy to work.
I will be down in that area scouting photo locations before the race.

>> I have El Crucero at km 257 on the hwy.

bajawife - 10-23-2006 at 02:49 PM

I'm so jealous that you all get to go watch the 1000 this year. I will unfortunately be staying home and listening to the weatherman on the computer. My husband is racing so I will be a nervous wreck as always!
Have fun all of you!

TMW - 10-23-2006 at 03:22 PM

LaTijereta, I should have said RM321 sorry, and that is the access road that you spoke of.

Bajawife, good luck to your husband and sorry you won't be down to see the action first hand.

what time does anyone think the trophys will be getting to BOLA??

Mike, I hear there will be a new longer space between the last m/c and the first truck... increased from 1 to a new 3 hours gap.

That means the first Trophy Trucks won't begin until about 11 am!

L.A. Bay (Checkpoint 5) is race mile 377.... soooo about 6-7 hours to get there for the fastest...

Class 22 open bikes: Noon to 1 pm+ for the first...

Trophy Trucks: 5pm to 6pm and on through the rest of the night from then!

LaTijereta - 10-23-2006 at 05:48 PM

T/T average in 2004 was 62 mph (fastest)..

BOLA would be close to 6PM for the 1st one through..

"Put another log on the fire"

capt. mike - 10-23-2006 at 05:49 PM

well, that may change my plans if i don't get hooked with a TT team, could just hang there for the nite i guess. if the 1st guys get there at dusk they'll be plenty coming all night, all trucks catagories i guess. better sort out a place to camp/watch etc.

then on to mulege fri/sat., easy stuff.

TMW - 10-23-2006 at 05:56 PM

For TV that would work out well for the finish. With the TTs leaving at 11am, it will take them around 17 hours to La Paz putting them at the finsh at around 7am Pacific time. But since La Paz in on Mtn time it will be around 8am local. With the morning light a helo could follow the lead cars/trucks into La Paz. The bikes on the other hand will get there around 11:30pm pacific time. That's still time to party. The bikes will be running about 6+hours in the dark and the car/trucks 13+. Of course some of those TTs look like a football stadium lit up.

In 1995 the first bike averaged over 63mph and the first Trophy Truck also 63mph. The bike beat the truck by 3 minutes. I personally think the trucks will beat the bikes this year with Honda racing the CRF450 and not a XR650. I think the winning bike will be lucky to average over 60mph. This course, with a few exceptions, is a wide open pin the throttle course.

LaTijereta - 10-23-2006 at 06:19 PM

TW..

Go back to school..
First T/T will be in at 16 hrs OR 3am PST (race time).

Sun will not be up yet in the SUR... Sunrise is 6am in Loreto that morning

[Edited on 10-24-2006 by LaTijereta]

TMW - 10-23-2006 at 06:37 PM

Well it will look like daylight when they come in.

TMW - 10-23-2006 at 06:43 PM

I think it will be 17 hours. At 16 hours they would average 65.5mph. I don't think they can do that. 17 hours would be 61.65mph. very doable.

David K - 10-23-2006 at 07:14 PM

Remeber that Daylight Saving ends in a week or so, so sundown will be closer to 5 pm than the current 6 pm!

LaTijereta - 10-23-2006 at 07:20 PM

TW..
I would think the 17hr run is more likley, but that is more like 4am (racetime) and 5am "local" time in La Paz (well after they run out of Tecate at the finishline!)

David
Sunset at El Crucero is pegged for 4:45pm (racetime) on that date...We will be there until 6pm+/-, before pulling out for Loreto.

If this is true, first I have heard of it, limiteds will be leaving the start mid affternoon, putting them into the dark at Diablo or sooner? Light bars at Kiliwas? In a five sixteen car we made old/new Puertecitos Road before dark on a simialar cource. Could Be a long night for a lot of chase dudes. With a 9am start last year our Sporty car did'nt leave till noon thirty, made the summit in the daylight. It would make a rough chase for a lot of guys two long days and nights of racing. Glad I will be at COCO's instead of down south on Mex 1. Reminds of my first baja chase at the Dos Mil.

bajalou - 10-23-2006 at 08:58 PM

From Score website 9p 10 23

Thursday, Nov. 16:
RACE STARTS: In front of Riviera Convention Center. Motorcycle’s & ATV’s – 6:30am 4-Wheel vehicles – 10:30am

capt. mike - 10-24-2006 at 05:18 AM

i was at the finish line 2004 in la paz. the first trucks, Post and others, were in about 2 in the morning and a party was RAGING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LaTijereta - 10-24-2006 at 05:25 AM

Mike...
Two things this year will make for a later finish than 2004.
New Loreto section added is about 62 miles
Later start time for 4-wheel cars (9:30 to 10:30)

Should push the finish back to around 4am (race time)

David K - 10-24-2006 at 07:34 AM

Thanks Lou... for the update.... It was Carlos of Baja Pits who told us last Thursday at the pit meeting about the new 3 hour seperation from the last m/c / quad to the first truck and the rest... It was his belief that would put the first trucks out at 11 am... So, it will be 10:30am... great!

I have the photos to prove it!

Thanks again for the ride down...and back!

Big Fun!!

LaTijereta - 10-24-2006 at 10:12 AM

DK,
With the race entries near 400, there alot more bikes starting in the sportsman class this year.
Bikes start at 6:30am and start 2 a minute.. Last bike leaves close to 7:50am +/- ....First car leaves (3) hours later.

capt. mike - 10-24-2006 at 01:19 PM

ha - yur crackin me up Matt.

we'll do it again when you can.

YES, I understand that (as Carlos of Baja Pits said 11 am)... I was responding to BajaLou who posted off the SCORE site with that 10:30 am start quote... Earlier being better...

So either SCORE was wrong with the 10:30 am start time or was approximating it... OR The 3 hour seperation was an approximation and the trucks will start a bit less than 3 hours after the m/cs... so 10:30 instead of 10:50 am... ?

They will get there when they get there... About 6 hours from Ensenada to El Crucero for the fastest (bikes, trucks, and Class 1 cars)... 12:30pm and on we will have motorcycle action, and the Trophy trucks and the rest starting around or soon after 5:30pm (after sundown).

b1k spectating/pit spot

Rocketman - 10-25-2006 at 09:50 AM

As of right now some of us Locosmocos are thinking of setting up a pit a bit north of El Crucero/ Calamajue jcn. somwhere south of the Carwash....

TMW - 10-25-2006 at 05:05 PM

Rocketman, Bajapits have the Locomocos (north) at RM276 Gonzaga Bay and (south) at RM612.

TMW - 10-25-2006 at 05:26 PM

The ATV use to start 10 minutes after the MCs. I assume they still do or do they?
